Surprised? I definitely was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May 28, 2007 G. Richardson (UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Lets get one thing straight, the only R.Kelly song I knew was "I believe I can fly" which is a song I hate and I also knew "you are not alone", the song he wrote for Michael Jackson and another song I don't like very much. So I wasn't very impressed with what little I knew of R.Kelly and didn't actually want to buy any of his albums but it was my birthdat and my mum gave me thirty quid vouchers for a supermarket that didn't have a very good CD collection, so I reluctantly got this one along with a couple of other CD's, for some reason this was the first one I listened to and i've gotta say I was very pleasantly surprised, there's 19 songs on here and i'd say what i've heard of it so far i'm loving, i'm still listening to it now though(Up to track 16 at the mo, "Sex planet"), anyway what i've heard so far is great, Ah whatever, just buy it and enjoy it as much as I am right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Double Up or Half the Album June 2, 2007 lcollens (London, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am always a bit dubious about R Kelly releases. I normally like the singles but then the rest of the album leaves me unfulfilled. I feel rather the same about this album but maybe more positively than before. The first five tracks are quite good in a 'club' RB kind of way, particularly the eponymous track DOUBLE UP, TRYIN TO GET HER NUMBER and GET DIRTY. I think Snoop was underused in DOUBLE UP. As an accomplished rapper (arguably more than Kels is a RB singer) more input from him may have been better than R Kelly's 'dis is how i live' bragga-vado.

br /I think there is A LOT of filler in this album. I suspect this is done now in order to 'justify' the cost of CDs these days. But there are some gems in mid-album. Namely SAME GIRL with USHER (great track), HOOK UP ft. Huey, BEST FRIEND ft. Keyshia Cole and Polow Da Don (ubiquitous producer for Fergie's London Bridge among other hits), and lastly, the lead single IM A FLIRT ft. T.I. and T-Pain.

br /Trouble with this album is largely in the lyrics where I just shake my head at some the ridiculous things that R Kelly comes out with and I am frankly embarrased for him. THE ZOO is a c-l-a-s-s-i-c example. So is SWEET TOOTH, HAVIN A BABY and LEAVE YOUR NAME. However the production on the album is nice throughout. R Kelly is a real veteran with this being his 8th studio album however I feel he could largely benefit from help in the writing department. You would easily forget that this man has written and co-written tracks for some great RB songs. I think also that considering his recent brush with the law for sexual offences would add measure to his writing - apparently not. RISE UP refers to the recent shooting in Virginia. I feel this is a little cheesy and unnecessary - it smacks a little bit of I BELIEVE I CAN FLY but maybe a little 'opportunistic' for the lack of a better word. I can't find much legitimacy in it.

br /All in all this album I would download per track and thank God for this feature on iTunes etc. (but then aren't there a lot of albums like that these days?!)

It Grew On Me... June 6, 2008 D (London) I got this album ages ago and to be honest - I really didn't like it apart from the tracks he had released as singles. I rarely like albums when I listen to them for the first (second or third) time so I thought I should give it a chance and after a few listens, a lot of the tracks grew on me and now I really like the album.
br /
br /The tracks that stand out from the album are; I'm a Flirt and Leave Your Name - the slower tracks are very good and there are probably 2 tracks out of 19 that I'm not too keen on (Havin' a Baby and I Like Love), so overall, this is a good album and definately worth giving a chance!
