5 out of 5 stars Not so difficult 3rd album   September 27, 2007
P. McKenna (Drogheda , Ireland)

I discovered Teddy Thompson through his work with Rufus Wainwright [who has an amazing string arrangement on this album 'My Blue Tears'. As a previous reviewer said, worth the price of admission alone]. br /His 1st eponymous album was criminally overlooked, and even after the success of his 2nd Separate Ways, it didn't do much business for him, a real shame, and if you haven't heard it, I'd sincerely recommend it as a near perfect debut album. br /His 2nd album Separate Ways is a modern masterpiece, with not a duff song on it, and perfectly arranged/produced. It did bring a lot of attention to Teddy, and deservedly so. The songs contained on this album were mostly inspired [if that's the right word] by the break up of a long term relationship, lending the album a gorgeous bitter-sweet flavour. br / So what about the 'difficult' 3rd album? I was surprised to read on his website when it was first mooted that he was going to do an album of country covers. I wanted more of the same, but he obviously needed to get this out of his system. He is a superb songwriter, not as grandiose or verbally clever as Rufus, but he paints fabulous word pictures in his songs. br /So, this latest effort takes him into country, and I was a bit sceptical as to whether I'd like it or not [I'm not a big country fan]. I was won over immediately, as the mournful violins of the opening track Change Of Heart filled the room...gorgeous and then it was obvious that Teddy is in excellent voice here, and the arrangements are superb. br /Its country without being too country if that makes any sense. I imagine he chose this set of songs for the lyrical content. The relationship break-up which fueled Separate Ways must still be stinging him a little [well a lot going by the lyrical content here..'I'm going to walk the floor over you' 'the worst is yet to come' 'down low' et al. The songs are all fairly maudlin, but don't let that put you off. Its an excellent album, and as previously said it might just act as a palate cleanser...or a heartbreak cleanser for him. br /Just don't leave us waiting too long for the real 3rd album of your own songs Teddy.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem of a record   October 2, 2007

This a real gem of a record and I'm so glad I found it. Don't be put off by the country repetoire this is a brilliant, heartfelt singer songwriter album. If you like Rufus Wainwright (who features on the record) and Damien Rice you'll love this. br / br /There are some fantastic harmonies from Iris De Ment and Tift Merritt to add to credibility. It's obvious he really means it, man. Finally one word about the excellent orchestration from Robert Kirby (the man who did Nick Drakes strings). br /This is heart-felt, working-man's blues and one of the best albums I've heard all year. Buy this today you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Teddy Thompson Up Front Down Low   June 18, 2009

A super CD. I was pleasantly surprised by this CD it has a strong country feel and found myself singing along to some old time hits. Having added this to my Teddy collection, I would say I do prefer his more recent CD's but would still recommend Teddy Thompson fans buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful talent   December 9, 2007
Reader (Madrid, Spain)
He can do no wrong. Teddy Thompson's `Separate Ways' was in my top five albums of 2006 and here he is again at the end of 2007. This time, amazingly, with an album of old country and western standards which he sings with a maturity well beyond his years. A truly wonderful talent.

5 out of 5 stars He Can Do No Wrong   December 18, 2007

Like everyone else that's reviewed this cd before me i was a bit shocked when Teddy decided to cover mainly old country songs, and only putting one of his own songs on the cd, i had thought it couldn't be as good as his last couple of cds, but man was i wrong! br /Actually the exact same has happened with this cd (for me) as the last. br /I bought "Separate Ways" not even knowing who Teddy was, and after, at the most 2 days, fell in love with it; I couldn't believe it when it happened again. br /I have got to say that Teddy has one hell of an ear for good melodies and songs. br /Fair enough every song (bar one) is a cover of old country songs, but the way Teddy has played and arranged the songs themselves has made them completely his own. br /I've spent the last, maybe 15 mins, trying to think of a worthy adjective to explain to anyone who reads this review just how good the cd actually is - but you know what? i simply couldn't! Absolutely brilliant will have to do for now. br /I was also going to say to stay away if you don't like country songs (and by that i mean old, traditional country songs) but because of the way Teddy has arranged the songs there is something in this cd for everyone - literally. br / br /In my book Teddy can do no wrong and i know now that i will, without a shadow of a doubt follow this guy for as long as he is recording music!! br / br /When you buy this cd i can guarantee you that you will fall in love with it! Definitely one of the best albums of the year! br / br /Yet another brilliant cd by Teddy!!! br /
