Amazon.co.uk Review
Kate Nash is the perfect pop starlet. She sounds enough like one existing star to make her an already snug fit for your tastes (if it needs spelling out for you--L.I.L.Y.A.L.L.E.N--there's no getting away from the thematic and elocutionary parallels, no matter how much the lady doth protest). She's ordinary-ish. She's you, your girlfriend, that girl over there you adore/admire, only clearly cuter and packed with a sharper tongue. She sings of nothing much, but sings it with juicy vim and bright expressions through a deliciously theatrical voice-box, a hangover from her stage school background that faltered, leading her to channel her wit and personality into writing songs. A sprinkling of anarchy too--something for the parents to disapprove of? Well, she's got a filthy mouth and a frankly blasé grasp of the Queen's English. It's a shame really that she's not quite made the perfect pop debut to match, but iMade of Bricks/i is a damn fine first run, when it gets it right. The jerky prelude to the album proper, "Play" reminds briefly of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bis, segueing into the Lily Allen plays Carter USM playfulness of "Foundations". "Dickhead" is a silly, smoky blues ditty, the massive, gyrating "Pumpkin Song" is Sugababes with their hair pulled behind the bike sheds, key-hammering highlight "Mariella" reminds of expressive vaudeville New Yorkers the Dresden Dolls and "We Get On" could be a Grease outtake, though nothing the innocent Olivia Newton John would ever wrap her lips around. Like Lily Allen then, but not that much. --iJames Berry/i

5 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the bad reviews   December 7, 2007

I eventually brought this album despite nearly being put off by the negative reviews. br / br /It was delivered yesterday and its amazing. br / br /I'm 34 so way over the albums 'target' audience and love it! br / br /It may be 'aimed' at teenagers but to overlook it because of that would be a grave mistake. br / br /I brought this and Lily Allens album at the same time and they have huge differences,I must say I prefer this one of the two. br / br /The best track is 'the nicest thing'- a ballad of unrequited love that is so easy to relate to, it sounds very 'Kate Bush' (instrumentally not lyrically/vocally) particularly near the end, reminds me very much of 'Love and Anger' and is very haunting....'mouthwash,'birds' and 'mariella' are the other high points. br / br /This is a great album full of a variety of emotions, it fun, quirky, comic in many places, sassy but underneath all that it has a lot of undertones to resentment, disappointment and apathy. br / br /Only wish I'd got it sooner rather than deliberating.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative fantastic album from a super talented girl   September 5, 2007

This album is one of the most innovative, fresh and beautiful albums i've ever heard. br /Kate offers a new sort of style of rough cockney(is that how you spell it?) londoner vocals with simple but effective piano melodies, with some ellaborate piano skills displayed throughout. br /Her voice is absolutely wonderful and writes, beautiful, incredible lyrics. br /Although foundations is a fantastically catchy great tune, D*ck head is the only let down. However, it is always said that every superb album has one terrible song.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning   January 7, 2008

Upon hearing Foundations for the first time on the radio, I did think it was Lily Allen, I can't deny it. But I was informed it was Kate Nash, who I'd never heard of. I rushed off to get the album and was shocked. br / br /Innocent and wise, beautiful but ugly, pure truth and fun, with laughter and so much personality it would fill a small country, Made Of Bricks is the best album I have listened to in 2007. br / br /Of course, there are a couple of dud tracks, but I can still happily listen to the entire album without needing to skip anything. br / br /I personally don't think Nash released anything like her best songs- Mouthwash and Pumpkin Soup have grown on me since their releases, however, the songs which struck me the first time I listened are unlikely to ever be heard by anyone who doesn't buy this album. br / br /Birds and Nicest Thing are quietly beautiful, whereas We Get On, Merry Happy and Mariella are bursting with fun with a bittersweet aftertaste. br / br /These 5 songs make this album for me. The rest of the album is still brilliant by most standards, however, it is these songs I think she should be remembered for. br / br /Having said that, I can honestly say that I listen to this album straight through, regardless of my mood or anything. I was shocked at how easy it was to listen to and like this album. br / br /Made Of Bricks is the album that we need today, it summarises many, many issues in life without necessarily being specific about them. Personally, I feel that Kate Nash has reached and touched a whole generation. br / br /On the other hand, if you can't stand her singles, you're unlikely to like this album. br / br /NB: If you're looking for gutsy, pouty, cynical view of the world (ie Lily Allen's debut....), you are in the wrong place. Kate Nash is the light to Lily Allen's dark view of the world.

KATE NASH HAS A CONTROVERSIAL STYLE AND MODERN AND INTRESTING LYRICS AND NARATIVE AND THIS IS WHY, I FEEL, THERE HAS BEEN SUCH A MIX OF OPINION IN THESE REVIEWS. IN MY OPINION SHE IS A VERY TALENTED SONGSTRESS WHO DESERVES A LOT OF CREDIT FOR HER MUSIC AND THE RISK SHE TOOK IN DISTRIBUTING SOMETHING SO DIFFERENT TO WHAT PEOPLE ARE ACCUSTOMED TO. br / br /ALBUM = BRILLIANCE

5 out of 5 stars Seemingly naive and incredibly charming   October 5, 2007

What are all these overly vitriolic, invective-filled reviews doing here? br /What strange agenda must certain people have to express such major issues with what is basically the musings of a really quite talented young woman writing unassuming tunes about her perception and experience of life. br / br /The joy of Kate Nash, for me, is the total lack of self-importance within her lyrics and the willingness to expose her own idiosyncracies and vulnerabilities to such scrutiny. With Kate Nash there is a totally believable simplicity and honesty in every track. At times it truly sounds like her deepest, most hidden, inner thoughts as she plots her path through the mundanity of everyday life. br /It shows that Ms Nash actually has a very rich "inner-life" rather than following the more popular, pedestrian and intellectually impoverished direction favoured by lesser talents. br / br /Most of all; this album makes me smile and even laugh at times. It's not cynical, world-weary or negative but still has a knowing twinkle in it's eye which saves it from becoming mawkish or too sugary. br / br /That's a refreshing treat these days. br / br /(To the tiresome "she's copying Lily Allen" brigade) br /This album has none of that dreadful faux-attitude that sadly ruined my enjoyment of Lily Allen's offering. Initially loved her songs but after a couple of listens I began to notice that she actively supported, even aggressively championed, too many of life's unpleasantries and hypocracies to be digestable any longer. br / br /I agree with the where's "Caroline's a victim" comment. Superb track. (downloadable free from the official website if you're interested)
