| Customer Reviews: 1950s albums a big hit July 6, 2009 C. FULLER (Birmingham, United Kingdom) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This collection includes many hits, That Lucky Old Sun originally a number 1 in 1949 is here presented from his 1957 album. Mule Train also with Mitch Miller followed and in 1952 the British charts found him with 2 big hits High Noon and the jaunty Sugarbush with Doris Day. 1953 saw I Believe and Hey Joe and he went head to head with David Whitfield on Answer Me. The popularity of "Guys and Dolls" gave him a 1955 hit with A Woman in Love. The original album Rockin' dates from 1957 and has orchestrations by Paul Weston. The reworking of both That Lucky Old Sun and We'll be Together Again are said to be better remembered than the original recordings. The sound quality is excellent and the pairing of the hits with the Paul Weston backed album make this a most attractive compilation (by Tony Watts) with whom Glenn Gretlund of NotNow Music has worked extensively over the past 10 years.
Greatest Hits by Frankie Laine July 15, 2009 Wendy J. Jordan (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a well-produced CD featuring an interesting array of hits across the years. Some readers might find the absence of Rawhide a problem. I thoroughly recommend this CD.
The real recordings of the fifties. April 22, 2009 Colin R. Holmes (Wales) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
So often when you buy an album with a collection of hit singles of a particular artist they can be re recordings made at a later date or poor quality recordings hastily put together for a cheaper market. These are the original Frankie Laine hits sounding exactly like they did if you bought them on 78rpm in the fifties and includes nearly all the hits. There is also a bonus of other tracks from other fifties albums making it a very good value purchase. One carp. Why on earth is "Rawhide" his last major single not included?
