Amazon.co.uk Review Traditionally, Kylie Minogue has been at her best attempting pure pop, not chasing credibility, but iX/i--her tenth studio album, and the first since 2003's iBody Language/i--somehow pulls off the trick of being both. With production credits split between old hands like Richard Stannard and Guy Chambers and new faces like Calvin Harris, the Freemasons and Bloodshy Avant, the Swedish team behind Britney's "Toxic", iX/i does a neat job of matching big hooks with forward-thinking production tricks. The poptimistic Kylie fan will head straight for "2 Hearts", a sassy falling-for-you number with a glammy beat and a chorus poised to fill a thousand Karaoke rooms, and "Wow"--a thumping disco number with a lot of love to give. Scattered alongside these, however, are some slightly more adventurous productions that demonstrate that despite a few years off the stage, Kylie is well up to speed with 21st Century pop: the excellent "Speakerphone" begins with the sound of a strummed harp before diffusing into a shimmering, Scandinvian-tinged electro-pop number reminiscent of Robyn or The Knife, all snapping, sassy beats and vocodered vocal; meanwhile, the ghetto-pop bounce of "Nu-di-ty" proves raunch is still by no means beyond her. A very welcome return. , i--Louis Pattison/i

The adorable Kylie is back with a stunning new album February 26, 2008 L. Green (London, UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful

br /I'll start by talking about the great DVD you get with this special edition version of the album. It's got the video for 2 Hearts and a trailer for White Diamond but most importantly, it's got Kylie going through the album track by track, talking about her thoughts on the songs. She looks so cute as she gives us a run down on what was going through her head at the time and all the details of the recording process - it's a fascinating insight for Kylie fans and i could watch it over and over again. Plus, how awesome is the cover of this album, even better than the original one. I love the black and the sparkly red bits!
br /
br /I've listened to X a fair few times now and i have fallen completely in love with it. More consistent than Fever and Body Language it succeeds in effortlessly blending Kylie's various sounds into one single masterpiece. It's got the dark, stylish electro of Body Language mixed with the light, superbly catchy dance-pop of Fever and touches of Kylie's more experimental, personal side that shone through in her stand-out album, Impossible Princess - in fact, if i was to compare X to any other Kylie album it'd be that one.
br /
br /Kylie as a person remains just as cute and charming as always - her voice once again on top form with this album. The tracks are sensual, fun and above all just quite simply amazing. And the album cover! It's totally Wow!
br /
br /The album kicks off with glam-tastic 2 Hearts. It's maybe not were some were expecting but i personally love it. Along with In My Arms and Wow, this is very much Kylie doing what she does best in coming up with great pop songs. That vital essence of fun is conveyed in all three of the videos that have already been made for the album and crucially, just add more to the wonder and sparkle of the tracks.
br /
br /Moving on, Like A Drug and Speakerphone are very much indicative of Kylie's current electro-pop sound which she has taken up with much gusto. It fits her voice perfectly and both are hypnotic, counterposing her delicate vocals against killer synth basslines.
br /
br /Sensitized is a really interesting track and perhaps the one most indicative of influences from the aforementioned Impossible Princess album. An epic medley of strings and featuring a sample from a Serge Gainsbourg song it's one of those songs that is just heavenly as it launches into a brilliant chorus.
br /
br /Of course, almost every album has points which aren't the strongest and on X, this comes in the form of Heart Beat Rock and Nu-Di-Ty. Both are fun tracks but don't have the depth or power of the other tracks o0 nthe album. The former is the second of the Calvin Harris productions and brings to mind Gwen Stefani's 'Wind It Up'. I think when listening to the album as a whole they become far more likable, fitting in with overall feel of the complete album and in that respect i can totally see why Kylie included them.
br /
br /And then we get to The One, the first of the 5 song slice of perfection that lies at the heart of X, the heart that makes the album so magical. As soon as that epic guitar hook kick in you know you've got something special with this track. I have high hopes for the song as a future single and can't wait to see Kylie perform it live.
br /
br /No More Rain and Cosmic present some of the more downbeat, stripped back material on the album. The former is a beautiful blend of acoustic guitar and lush touches of strings and electronica with an exceptionally cute vocal from Kylie - the chorus in particular is amazing. Both songs are very personal to Kylie and that comes across very strongly in them.
br /
br /All I See is another interesting track, Touching back to Kylie's RB stylings on Body Language. Initially i didn't think that much of the song but the more i listened to it i realised how well done it was, exceeding in the way it portrayed just how versatile Kylie is, slipping effortlessly into a melting pot of genres all within one album.
br /
br /Stars is a personal favourite of mine, one of Kylie's most guitar based song since the days of Impossible Princess. It's very New Order and epic in its beauty.
br /
br /So all in all, X is incredibly listenable and a must for fans of Kylie and pop music alike. 20 years on and Kylie is still going strong, X, one of her strongest albums, being proof of that.
Kylie X October 30, 2007 thereviewers 36 out of 42 found this review helpful
I have heard this album several times now. I was interested to see what it would be like after such a gap. It's been a long time since Kylie released a truly great record. 'I Believe In You' might have a been a classic Kylie single, but the 'Body Language' album was in my opinion a disappointment overall - despite some great moments like 'Slow', 'Still Standing' and 'Sweet Music'.
br /
br /I've liked Kylie since the beginning. I've always wanted her to do well, create classic records. I'll admit being nervous about 'X'. '2 Hearts' does not sound like anything else on this album. It seems to have caused a spilt with other fans. I think it makes more sense when it's heard here on the album.
br /
br /What I think about 'X' is this. I think it's by far the best 'album' Kylie has made. There are loads of songs on it which could make it as singles. Personally, the dark electro 'Like A Drug', the Calvin Harris penned sugar-rush euphoria of 'In My Arms', the slightly Europop-ness (in a good way) of 'The One' and the Cathy Dennis 'Wow' (which I think sound like a cross between 'Love At First Sight' and Madonna's 'Holiday') are for me the standouts. They could all be classic Kylie singles. There are very few - if any if I'm being honest - that I dislike.
br /
br /As an artist, this is a really important album for Kylie so she can re-establish herself musically. As we all know, she's been away. But it's brilliant. It's absolutely her, the sleeve art is gorgeous, the songs really stand up, and they also sound ace very, very loud. This is the Kylie album I've been waiting (and hoping) for. It's so great to have her back looking and sounding better than ever.
X is right on the spot! November 21, 2007 Mr. C. Bacque (London) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Just listened to this whole album and have to say its absolutely excellent! - Lots of personal touches, some kookiness and pure pop indulgence all with a fresh 2007 size 3 Kylie footprint.
br /
br /I wasnt entirely sure when I first heard '2Hearts', but yeah it fits right in here... although there are SO many hit singles on here - namely 'The One' (soaring pop a little bit like Cher's 'Believe' if you ask me!), The best track is the sugar coated 'Wow' (Kylie in pigtails and glitter gives you a good idea!). 'Like A Drug' also really stands out, very electro with a killer hook.
br /
br /Other standouts are the slightly left of the middle 'Speakerphone', 'Heart Beat Rock' and 'Nu-di-ty' , all really catchy but cant put my finger on just why hehe! - Also have to mention the excellent 'No More Rain' - a retropect look on Kylie's recovery over the past 2 years it would seem...
br /
br /Altogether definitely the album of 2007.. grab a bottle of wine, stick it on, snog your mates, and smile...
After the storm... December 12, 2007 Andre Pinto (London, UK) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
I must start this review by stating that I am a big Kylie fan. I have been a fan or her and her music for a very long time and I like to think that she has managed to have one of the longest standing careers in pop music that have been marked by several transformations, reconstructions, high and low moments... but isn't that true for all of us? She still managed to remain true to herself and keep a hold of her fans. I think that, just by itself, it's quite remarkle and there aren't that many artists that can claim the same....
br /
br /So... 2 Hearts was released, and I must say my first thought was: What is this about?? Unlike many, I don't think it's a total rubbish single and I think it is a move from Body Language, although maybe not as bold as it could be and not as catchy as most of her fans are used to. Nevertheless, I think it's an OK track, but not her best single...keeps growing on me though. But overall I must say I think this is one of her best albums... although I agree with the little bit impersonal remark that some people have been mentioning... but it's still very well produced, with some amazing remarkle pop songs that can easily become classics! Let's see:
br /
br /2Hearts (7/10) - As I've said, for me not the best moment of the album. I already knew this song from before, as performed by Kish Mauve, and to have Kylie coming after and perform it pretty much like the original, did not quite do the trick for me. She is much better than that. I was expecting better, especially for the 1st single of a much anticipated album. Forgetting that, it is a good departure from the past, prompting Kylie into a new direction, drinking from the fountain of a more darker/80s sound.
br /
br /Like A Drug (10/10) - For me, one of the best, if not the best track of the album. The sample from "Fade to Grey" by Visage feels so natural in the song that almost seems like it was constructed for it. Amazing track, taking Kylie to new areas of pop music, heer her breathy feminine voice sounds amazing. This is Kylie X, people!
br /
br /In My Arms (8/10) - A very good track in classic Kylie terms. It screams Kylie and you can't amagine anyone else singing this. It's perfect for her and appeal to all her credits and laurels, nevertheless, it doesnot bring anything new, which justifies the 8 and not a 9. But if you are a fan... this will be on repeat for sure.
br /
br /Speakerphone (10/10) - I must confess that this was the song that conquered me. The moment it started I ran to my stereo and had to put this up, sit down and listen. The intro is probably one of the best pop songs intros I've ever heard (Bjorkie inspired) and the track, although has some similarities to GermanBoldItalic, it is quite different, more adventurous and with deeper feelings and a more complex compelling melody. This song is GREAT... great! I can't get enough of it! The most adventurous momnet in theb album.
br /
br /Sensitized (7/10) - The 8 is given in the hope that it will grow on me eventually. Maybe it's because "Bonnie et Clyde" is one of those songs that have classical status to it. To play with perfection, is just not a good move. Although I must say that if this was written 5 days ago it would be a 5, not an 8. It is growing on me, but as soon as I listen to that into, I'm expecting Serge and Brigitte to jump out and start singing the track. It's always tricky to mess with classics, but it is a good pop song. I recognise that if you don't know gainsbourg that well, you will have no problems with it and you'll love this track.
br /
br /Heart Beat Rock (9/10) - The subtitle should be: "Kylie does Timberlake"! But this is not depreciative at all. Kylie has proved in many previous moments that she can do R'n'B inspired pop songs extremely well. Listen to Cruise Control, Soul on Fire, Promises, You Make Me Feel to have an idea. She knew exactly what she wanted to achieve with this track. And she did. It is bouncy, bumpie, raw, sweaty and makes your heart beat ROCK!! It will make a killer video and you can imagine, from moment one, a reprise of "Red Blooded Woman". Very, very good.
br /
br /The One (9/10) - Again, classical Kylie. It's Kylie in and out. Killer bassline, the chorus is addictive and fans will love it, especially if you liked her collaborations with Scissor Sisters. I had to check the credits 3 times to believe that this is not a Babydaddy/Shears collaboration.
br /
br /No More Rain (8/10) - As a total different feeling from the album, and stands quite alone and by itself in the album. I think it would have been more suitable as a b-side, but it is good to know that this is one of the more personal track for Kylie and I guess that is justification enough. It is a good mid-tempo moment for Kylie, but I doubt it will beat some of her previous moments like Put Yourself In My Place.
br /All I See (8.5/10) - It sounds like a Janet Jackson reject song, but Kylie takes it to a new dimension. Again, a more R'n'B attempt by Kylie and quite well executed. I love her soft voice and the fact that she does not to scream her lungs out on the track like some recent R'n'B singers to prove she can sing. I must say I am liking this song more and more... and I picture a nice spring day, with the gentle warmth of the sun on my face, driving down a road by the sea... and this will sound like perfection.
br /
br /Stars (9/10) - I must confess straight away... I love this track. Again... a Kylie classic. Makes you jump, has a killer chorus, a catchy beat and uses everything that Kylie does well. It is perfect for her, although not very inovative. It would not stand out of place in the Light Years album. One of the campest song in the album, by far.
br /
br /Wow (10/10) - My favourite track of the album, alongside Like a Drug, although they are total opposites. One of them is simple, dark, effective... Wow... is heavily produced, full of light and colours, bouncy taking you to a grown up's playground where everything is colourful, silly and fun. Kylie has always mastered this songs like no other artist, and again, she proves it in the best possible way. When it comes to having fun and being yourself, Kylie is your ultimate host.
br /
br /Nu-Di-Ty (5/10) - To me, an exemple where more is clearly less. It just does not sound good to me, although I must say that it has a very good chorus. But it is all too much... makes the music confusing and makes you loose your north. Gwen Stefani gone bad.
br /
br /Cosmic (9/10) - The best down tempo in the album. This is a serious candidate to appear and star in the "mellow down-tempo" act of a Kylie concert. Has a good beat, good lyrics, and Kylie was always good at singing these type of tracks.... transmiting you emotion but not over killing it. A potential classic, fo sure.
br /
br /Overall............... EXCELLENT. GO AND BUY IT. And if you do, make sure you'' put it on your computer to get one of the best Kylie tracks ever: Rippin' Up The Disco. I can't wait to hear this on and to go and rave on the dancefloor. This will be a killer track. Why this was not in the album or why she doesnot released this as a first single... is totally beyond me!!!!!! But it is the best possible gift she could give to all of us!!!! Thank you Kylie and you... DID IT AGAIN!
Poptastic! December 6, 2007 D. Provias (London, UK) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Kylie's tenth album transports you to an intergalactic zero-gravity world where everyone is sexy, beautiful, liberated, and covered in glitter. Having collaborated with Calvin Harris, she means business on the dancefloor.
br /
br /1. 2 Hearts - Probably the least dancey track on the album. It's exciting and electric but you won't be dancing to this, which is probably a good thing as you'll need to save your energy for what's to come.
br /
br /2. Like a Drug - Not so much "la la la" but a bit more "ah ah ah", this will definitely get you shuffling your feet with it's entrancing rhythm and electric Goldfrappesque sound.
br /
br /3. In My Arms - One of the songs co-written and produced by Calvin Harris, it's definitely reminiscent of "The Girls" and "Acceptable in the 80s". You're definitely on the dancefloor by now and you're not going anywhere.
br /
br /4. Speakerphone - Sexy, addictive, and totally poptastic. Kylie's in full sexbot mode on this one. It's impossible to resist the beat and the music will hypnotise you. No matter what I'm doing or where I am, I can feel my muscles twitching as they're aching to dance to this.
br /
br /5. Sensitized - This contains a fabulous sample from "Bonnie Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. It's a little less electric and bit more retro-pop than the other songs. It's like being in some sexy 60-70s French film full of innuendo.
br /
br /6. Heart Beat Rock - Another Calvin Harris collaboration, this is a bit more thump and less pop. It's a little like "Hollaback Girl" but much better.
br /
br /7. The One - You'll be travelling light years on this one. The Kylie rocket has taken off and is on its way to the stars now.
br /
br /8. No More Rain - A bit less sexy but quite a happy song. Definitely pop but not as dancey as the rest.
br /
br /9. All I See - This really reminds me of something Janet Jackson would sing. This is fast and sexy. The sort of song you'll be listening to when you're first falling in love with someone.
br /
br /10. Stars - Spacey and fabulous.
br /
br /11. Wow - One of the best songs on this album and quite likely the next single. It's like "Love At First Sight" only better. Wow wow wow wow!
br /
br /12. Nu-Di-Ty - Bizarre and kinky. You can just imagine this song being played at an haute couture fashion show.
br /
br /13. Cosmic - Probably the only ballad on this album. It's sweet and romantic.
br /
br /14. Rippin Up the Disco - This track isn't actually on the CD but you can download after following a link when you pop it into your PC or Mac. Definitely a top track and you'd be a fool not to download it. You'll definitely be floor-humping to this!
br /
br /That's it. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
