she is not pop November 1, 2004 O. Craske (UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I think that this album shows how much hilary has grown up her voice and songs are alot more mature then her first album and i think that people should have a listen and not sterotype her as pop! You can also feel that these songs have feelings in them about whats happened in her life such as the song haters (lindsey lohan) and also mr james dean seems a bit aimed and some past love in her life??pI like all the songs on her album but some of my faves have to be "someone watching over me" "dangerous to know" "the last song" and "i am" pI think it is worth a listen, if you are pondering to buy it buy it!!!pHilary rocks and its annoying that you cannot buy her album in the shops thank goodness for amazon or i would never have it!

I think this is a great album, no matter what anyone else says. As well as having great acting talent she's also a great singer. Her songs mean something and aren't just a load of bellowney. This album is great even better than her first, or at least thats what i think.
HILARY RULES!!!!!!!! October 13, 2004 katy judd (surrey, england) 21 out of 26 found this review helpful
Hilary's new album is amazing! Her voice, songs and lyrics have all matured so much since metamorphosis, that album was mostly pop, but this album is pop/rock, there's an edge. Still there are a few ballads, which is great, some pop songs and some rockier songs and some danceable tracks. It also features 2 tracks from Raise Your Voice. If you have metamorphosis, the 3 best songs on that would be the 3 worst on this, (but that album is still quite good.) There are lyrics in the booklet and an enhanced section, which you need the internet to access. This is definitely in my top 3 albums.pFLY - A good way to start the album. You probably have your own opinion of this song so I won't go on. 9.5/10pDO YOU WANT ME - This track makes you wanna dance! It wasn't that keen on it the first time I hear it, but it really grows on you. The chorus is loud and rocky, the best bit of the song. 9.5/10pWEIRD - This is such a good song, one of my favourites. The verses are chilled, leading in to a louder chorus. It's a hard to describe because it is kinda weird! The lyrics are a bit strange, "Don't you think it's weird? Weirder than Weird." 10/10pHIDE AWAY - After the first few loud songs, this is good break. This is a ballad, with a hint of rock at the chorus. The vocals are good, and you can imagine swaying to this. The bridge is really good, as is the chorus. I love it! My second favourite. 10/10pMR. JAMES DEAN - A bit of a techno song, the chorus is ROCKIN!!!! Loads of guitar at the chorus, (and a solo guitar bit) not so much at the verse though, which is effective. Hilary co-wrote this, along with Haylie, her sister. The lyrics are unusual, but good aswell. 9.5/10pUNDERNEATH THIS SMILE - This song was written by John Shanks, who wrote loads of Michelle Branch's songs and also wrote Come Clean. This song isn't original or any thing special, but is still a good song. 9/10pDANGEROUS TO KNOW - I find it hard to explain this track, but I do love the chorus. It's not your type of bop along pop song, but it mixes a whole load of music together, like rock pop, ballad etc. I really like the background music to this, (just a random thought!) 9.5/10pWHO'S THAT GIRL - I absolutely love this song!!!!!!!!!!! It's so good! I have a bonus track on my CD, which is an acoustic mix of this song. It' a good mix, but this one is better, as it stands out more. Every bit of this song is great. My favourite. 10/10pSHINE - A happy, poppy song now, the lyrics are uplifting. My favourite bit of this tune, is the first line, "Everyone knows that I'm 10 feet under." I really don't why I love it so much, I just do! 9/10pI AM - Another pop song, I think Hilary should have split Shine and this song up over the album, as they have both have the same sound, (well kind of.) The lyrics are again uplifting, "I am special, I am beautiful," etc. A downside to this song is that that it all sounds quite alike. 9/10pTHE GETAWAY - Amazing, this song and lyrics is quite original. The chorus rocks! The whole song is clever because it about driving, but not, if you get that!?! My third favourite. 10/10pCRY- This is a sweet ballad, but a little boring. She does a good vocal on this, and the lyrics have good meaning and are easy to understand. The ballad does have edge, which is interesting. 9/10pHATERS - This song is rather weird, it's got qualities of a pop song, but is really different. It's fast paced, and Hilary co-wrote this. This is aimed at Lindsay Lohan, you can tell, especially by the line "You say your boyfriend's sweet and kind, but you've still got you eyes on mine." Good, but strange. 9.5/10pROCK THIS WORLD - This is probably the song with the most rock in it, but doesn't have as many guitar riffs as some as the others. It reminds me of "Girl Can Rock." I think Hilary wrote this, but I could have been Haylie. 9.5/10pSOMEONE'S WATCHING OVER ME - Featured on Hilary's new film Raise your Voice, a ballad with a nice message. It's probably the purest ballad on Hilary's album, as the others have a hint of pop or rock, but although this has a small hint, it doesn't have as much. Really good. 10/10pJERICHO - Also in Raise your Voice. This is slowish pop song, and it's really good. Nearly as good as Someone's Watching Over Me. 9.5/10pTHE LAST SONG - I thought this song was going to be rubbish, as it was the finishing point to the album and really short, but it's really not. I hated Inner Strength on Metamorphosis, but this isn't like that, it's much more a song than Inner Strength, with a good message, written by Haylie Duff. 10/10pOverall this album is so good and is an hour long, so if you like Fly or any other of Hilary's songs you should definitely but this!pLYRICS - 9/10/10brVOCAL - 8.5/10brMUSIC- 9.9/10pOVERALL - 95/100

We get it, Hilary Duff, you're nice. pYou're the only sunny blond pop star still standing, you're close to your family, you make sweet and safe movies and music for the tween set, and even when you wear so-brown-it's-black nail polish and a Motörhead concert tee, you still don't pull off pouty. pThe thing is, with perhaps the exception of Avril Lavigne and Lindsay Lohan, no one's complaining. The story of teen star tiring of her girl-next-door image only to affect a more extreme, sexy one for the second album is played out by now. Ditto the "girl on the brink of self-destruction" and the "out-of-control party girl." But what is the media to do if a chart-topping teen star doesn't offer much in the way of tabloid fodder or not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman angst or a dark side simmering beneath her seemly surface? And what if she also doesn't conform to the other extreme stereotype, that of a corny goody two-shoes who regular teenagers can't or don't want to relate to? pAsk Hilary Duff. pShe's charming and adorable, outspoken without being preachy, a good girl without being unrealistically restrained. But mostly, she's a regular 17-year-old. And while that makes it tough to slap on her the "perfect good girl" or "dirty bad girl" label that inevitably gets assigned to all female pop stars, it's also what makes her so popular. p"In some magazines, they almost want me to deny what I am, and I never do that because I really am comfortable with myself," she says. "I am a good girl. I'm not going to try to prove to anybody else that I'm not this clean-cut type of person, because I am. I'm not crazy out there partying all the time. When I have time off, I like to go out to clubs sometimes, but that's not a 'bad girl' thing to do, that's just fun. And I definitely don't dress in turtlenecks, but because I don't take my clothes off and show everything I have doesn't mean that I'm not a grown-up." pLooking at the way most pop stars present themselves, it's easy to think that dressed = kiddie artist, undressed = adult artist. Duff, however, doesn't see sex as being synonymous with growth. p"Certain artists my age who are going through this phase of not wanting a younger audience or not wanting people their age to like them or trying to get a more male-oriented audience will take their clothes off, and I definitely don't think that's a sign of maturity," she says matter-of-factly. "But I also think that if they feel comfortable doing stuff like that, then more power to them." pAccelerated maturity -- for better or for worse, and whether the expression of it is role-model-worthy or not -- is something all starlets deal with at some point. But unlike some of her peers, who ironically end up seeming immature as they try too hard to demonstrate how grown up they are, Hilary shows a self-awareness and honesty that reveals a young woman who really is coming into her own.
