5 out of 5 stars Chuck Berry   April 23, 2009
Fly Fisher
These discs will satisfy any Chuck Berry fans appetite for his earlier recordings. The studio recordings which are interrupted by both Chuck and the producer gives one an idea of just what goes in to making a saleable recording which many of us really do not have a clue about.Very well done, will add much to any Chuck Berry fans collection

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Chuck Berry   March 21, 2008
Dave the Rave Ford (Cornwall, UK)

Four CDs, covering his recording career at Chess from 1955 to 1959, superb as regards sound and content. All the classics are here of course, together with a reasonable number of alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks. br /Interesting to see that 'How High the Moon' on Disc 2 was previously released on the 'Chuck Berry on Stage' LP. Not on my copy of that execrable LP on the Pye RB label it isn't ; presumably the Chess release had different content and I'd be interested to see a track listing for the American version. br /But what a shame about the packaging and presentation. The discs come in a fold out cardboard wallet held together with a bit of string, which is not going to take too much hard use. The accompanying booklet is pretty sparse as regards session details, but worse than that is the fact that it is printed on a patterned brown background. When you consider that not many people buying this will be in the first flush of youth it makes one wonder about the thought process of the designer who came up with this masterpiece, which requires good lighting and (in my case) the old varifocals in order to read it. br /But don't let this put you off buying. Undoubtedly this will be the definitive Chuck Berry set for some years to come and apart from the packaging is excellent. br /Now, when are we going to get a definitive Buddy Holly set ?
