| Customer Reviews: ...so how didn't it work then... February 24, 2008 Mr. H (Embra) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
So how didn't it work then? You had Eileen Twain, who a few years later would become the biggest selling female artist in the Galaxy, and you had AOR god Paul Sabu who has worked on fourteen platinum selling albums for the likes of David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Madonna and John Waite, as well as his priceless AOR work in his won band, Only Child, and such hidden gems as Alexa and Silent Rage.
br /
br /The material has been out in a few formats including "Beginnings", "The Limelight Sessions" and "Wild And Wicked", but this version seems to have the most tracks with eighteen songs making an appearance. It seems to be Only Child who were responsible for the backing tracks, and with Paul Sabu working with the Metal Queen, Lee Aaron, at the time, this is firmly rooted in AOR, rather than the country pop Shania became famous with. Which may be why most of her country fans turn nasty when presented with these demos.
br /
br /But if you think of it another Paul Sabu project, then it all makes much more sense. After all, as well as his work with Lee Aaron, he was also writing and producing for Alexa and Precious Metal around this time. And despite it's demo nature, these songs (mainly Sabu / Twain co-writes) have held up well. Although most of the songs are pure AOR, there are a few harder rocking tunes that give an indication of what might have been, had they been picked up, turning Shania into a rock chick. Grrr.
br /
br /Ms Twains voice is almost fully developed, and there's no doubting what a great singer she can be. The only real flaw is the very pedestrian percussion, and that's the only place you can really pick up on the fact that these were demos to be shopped around record labels, rather than finished recordings. Regardless, there are still a few AOR gems dotted around the album including 'The Heart Is Blind' and '(Don't Gimme That) Once Over'. Some of the poppier, dance tunes are a bit hard to take, but this is actually worth listening to.
Not the norm June 27, 2009 Raindaisy (Romford Essex) It was not quite what we expected its a bit rocky so unless your a hardened shania fan and know her previous stuff then you may not like this
