5 out of 5 stars Great Track   March 25, 2008

I never really took much notice of Estelle when she released the single '1980' a few years back because i felt it had too much rap in it for my liking, it's only now that i've become a lot more involved with her, this single is probably why, and i also think the fact that she has switched lables to John Legend's new US label has helped her career considerably. 'American Boy' is a super memorable and catchy dance track with elements of pop/funk and hip/hop infused and also has a techno/disco edge. It features hugely successful guest rapper Kanye West who really makes a great fitting addition to the song. br /

4 out of 5 stars Great song!   August 30, 2008

After recently caning Estelle's dreadful follow up single (No Subsitute Love) in another review, I thought it was only fair to also give the girl a break and credit where its due. I have to confess that I'm not a lover of RB, but some of the songs (like this one) do stand out from the crowd in whats currently a very RB dominated pop music world. Its a bit different from most the other stuff you hear and indeed very catchy. Certainly one of the best pop songs this year without a doubt, although unfortunately thats no massive achievement seeing as the quality of pop music seems to have gone very downhill since the introduction of music downloads and the decline of 'Top of the Pops'. No one seems bothered about the singles charts anymore and unfortunately pop seems to have lost its romance and become almost faceless. A few years back the top 10 would ooze quality songs and have big selling number 1s that stay there for weeks. Now you get the odd decent song like this that does hang around in the chart for ages, simply because there is not a lot of good music about at the moment and no one really cares anymore. Anyway the combination of Estelle's vocals and Kayne West's rapping talents work well together and I hope Estelle recovers from that recent disaster she followed this up with and brings out more greats songs like this one and of course 1980.
