5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful   March 29, 2008

Amidst a glut of female singer songwriters, A Fine Frenzy stand head and shoulders above their peers. From the opening bars to the last few notes this album never fails to dazzle, both lyrically and musically. If you are looking for something full and rewarding, then this is the answer to your prayers.

Wow! This young woman deserves to be massive. I stumbled upon this release when I was looking at Amazon.com, and they had a mini feature on Alison (otherwise known as A Fine Frenzy) just before the release of the CD. Her music was described as beautiful piano led melodies. The fact that she also wrote her own music and lyrics also appealed to me - this shows real talent, rather than yet another pretty young face with a style and image manufactured by a music label. I have now had ONE CELL IN THE SEA for only a couple of days, but I can honestly say that this is one of the best releases that I have heard for a long time. br / br /The melodies are superb and the lyrics are intelligent and original. Alison's voice is also fantastic - she has quite a distinctive voice - and she has great range and pitch. br /The songs are a mixture of straightforward love songs (such as "Almost Lover") along with more conceptually themed tracks (such as "Rangers"). "Almost Lover" is actualy the song that struck me most on first hearing the whole album - it is beautifully sad; the music is subtle with a slow tempo, but there is bags of emotion supplied through her voice and the lyrics which show a maturity behind her tender years. br / br /Other standout tracks for me include "You Picked Me" which is a lovely uptempo love song, describing how, like an apple from a tree, her lover picked her even though she was difficult to reach. "Ashes and Wine" is another sad love song about the end of a relationship and the hope that it may be rekindled. br /I could go on and list all of them. This album is so well executed and produced that there are really no fillers. It really is an incredibly accomplished piece of work. br /It is hard to think of someone to compare Alison to, because there are so few truly talented artists around. For me, it was the fact that she played the piano that drove me to buy her album. For talent and originality, I would compare her to Tori Amos, although Alison is far more accessible than Amos. br /Given the standard of ONE CELL IN THE SEA, I shall eagerly await her second release. If she can maintain this level or develop it, it should be amazing.

A super album from the wonderfully talented Alison. Songs to make you smile and be you to...if you are looking for an artist with great vocals and with songs that puts you at awe...its her. A great first album which captivates you from when you begin to play it to the very end. Love it.

This is wonderful- has not been off my MP3 player. Cant wait til she tours br /She is gorgeous too- which always helps. But dont let that deflect you br /This girl can really sing and there is real sadness and emotion in the likes of ALWAYS LOVERS and NEAR TO YOU- which is just about the most perfect SAD ballad' Sometimes this sounds like the Sundays -MINNOW AND THE TROUT- only with Pianos, instead of janglY guitars- HOWEVER, thta is no bad thing and she is as good as Harriet Wheeler and may have more range. The lyrics are interesting too and not the usual fare- THE MINNOW and YOU PICKED ME appear to be of the same stable- i love 'the apple on the tree' and 'the shellfish on the sea' couplings and the fact that the minnow is to be found in the trouts mouth?!! br /LIFESIZE is good pop too, so she could crack it here, tho I kind of hope she does not really- cos she is way too cool for the masses br /THIS IS JUST A WONDERFUL release- last of days is pure class too! And it all stands up well, on a par with the likes of feist, cat power and all the real talented songbirds of our generation!

I was recommended A Fine Frenzy a while ago, and when I heard "Almost Lover", I was absolutely blown away. Just stunning...her voice and lyrics are absolutely beautiful. Yes she's going to get Tori Amos comparisons all over because she's a redhead that plays the piano, but although I love Tori, that's not fair; she's an artist in her own right, and I actually think her songs are nothing like Tori's. A lot of the album is about disappointment in love, and there there are hearbreaking songs such as "Almost Lover" (simply the best song I've heard in a long time, and one of the best-break up tracks ever written), about someone that was never quite officially your lover but led you on dramatically, which makes the heartache even worse when things end, as you don't even have the chance to say you'd been together properly - it's hard not to feel the pain when she sings 'I'd never want to see you unhappy / I thought you'd want the same for me...' and 'I cannot go to the ocean / I cannot drive the streets at night / I cannot wake up in the morning / Without you on my mind.' Who hasn't been there? Then there's "Ashes and Wine", about being on the receiving end of a break-up (feauturing the beautiful lyrics 'I'll drown in my tear-storming sea / That would show you, that would make you hurt like me') and having to let go but not quite wanting to; 'Is there a chance you may change your mind?' And then there's "Near To You", another stand-out track, about trying to move on but not quite being able to. The opening lines are just stunning, and hit you right there: 'He and I had something beautiful, but so dysfunctional it couldn't last / I loved him so, but I let him go, 'cause I knew he'd never love me back / Such pain as this shouldn't have to be experienced / I'm still reeling from the loss, still a little bit delirious.' Beautiful song... But where there are the quiet, heartbreaking songs, there are also catchy, positive songs, too; for example "You Picked Me", a pretty, sweet, and upbeat tune, and "Hope For The Hopeless" (the title says it all) and I also am a big fan of "The Minnow The Trout" (the album title is taken from one of the lyrics) and "Think of You." Basically, she's one of the best singer-songwriters to emerge in recent times, especially for one so young. She has a beautiful voice, powerful lyrics, and for a debut album this is simply amazing. Buy it.
