5 out of 5 stars Spec-tacular!   July 27, 2009

Great addition to any CD collection. The man, in more ways than one, is a legend

Ah Phil Spector. If we just forget about his recent craziness and concentrate on the music pre 1980. A great compilation, covering the infamous 'wall of sound'. However, the Teddys 'to know him is to love him' is missing from this collection. Strange as this is the song that launched him. Had this been included, it would get five stars. Legends always let you down don't they?

4 out of 5 stars He's a Rebel!   November 28, 2008

I agree with P K Brindle, this CD really should have had "To know him is to love him", but it has redeemed itself by having "He's a Rebel". All the songs are great on this and I would definitely recommend it. Fantastic to sing along to!

The reason why no Teddy Bears-or Spectors 3-recordings are here is because its called Wall Of Sound.A name which was not part of the musical language till at least 1964. br /By that time Phil had begun a long journey which began when he heard the Aquatones' hit YOU in mid 1958.Looking for a quick way to enter the music business he aimed on copying it-that idea of the first white doowoppers with a soprano girl lead. br /A song was composed-probably by Carol Connors as she was the only one with the ability to compose music-and Spector put his name to it for the simple reason that he'd written the words.Something he'd make a habit of doing for the next 10 years-to insist on a third of the credits for songs by Tin Pan Alley writers. br /Carol Connors was the reason why Phil Spector was able to make a living in the music business but he was already developing a nasty streak and after her car accident and his uncalled for remarks she never spoke to him again.Today she's a big media personality br /The Teddy Bears moved to Imperial but there were no real hits. However Carol (then known as Annette her real name) returned to the Era label and cut some great Pixie Girl pop before she began writing surf and hot rod music and later movie soundtracks br /Meanwhile Phil had upset Lee Hazelwood-the first of many he annoyed and who ended up having nothing to do with -to talk his way into working for Leiber Stoller.Easy enough really considering he had a track record but he stole many of their ideas. Thus the Wall of Sound had its first components-the castanets, the baiion rhythms the strings. br /It was 1962 and Phil was at Liberty where new singer Vikki Carr-seen as another Timi Yuro-was cutting her first single He's A Rebel which she learned from the Gene Pitney demo.Phil stole the demo and figured the song would suit the Crystals who he'd already cut about 3 singles on.The problem was the Crystals were not willing to leave New York but no problem to Phil as he saw artists as disposable and easily replaced. Thus a new set of Crystals who were actually the Blossoms among many other names. As an aside to this Vikki Carr topped the Australian charts in what is really a superior version.By 1968 she was a bigger star than Spector ever became as he was on the way out only to be rescued a year later by the ones he'd once seen as a threat-the Beatles br /Other labels were set up among the Philles organistaion.Like Phi Dan and Annette.Phil employed a guy called Jerry Riopelle as a producer. And if the single by the Treasures is anything to go by then Jerry Riopelle (now a maker of albums himself) invented the Wall Of Sound. br /In the U K Joe Meek was working on similar lines.Perhaps HE invented it br /And so it went on until the Wall Of Sound crumbled. The first cracks appeared when Phil recorded Ike Tina Turner. He was already blacklisted on radio stations so it got little airplay much to Phil's chagrin-his greatest masterpiece thrown aside like yesterday's papers. But the question is did he ever hear it coming out of a transistor-because it sounds quite ratty. However it was a huge hit single in the U K where an album was assembled and never made available at the time in the States until A M picked it up br /On the positive side Phil Spector was bang on with his BACK TO MONO campaign.I detest stereo. br /I also love copycats and its no problem to me that Phil Spector was a master of plagiarism.Enough people copied HIS copies!!!
