It's nice is to be proven wrong September 2, 2008 Mr. J. M. Ginebra Serrabou (London) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I first looked at the 5-star rating in the U.S. (after more than 100 people voted on it) and in the UK (with 10+ people all giving it 5 stars) I became slightly suspicious. Was it possible to get such a level of consensus on what seemed to me a past-due-date artist? Or was it simply perhaps the gay community rallying behind one of its favourite heroines? Some sort of a payback. I had to find out...
br /
br /I've always been a big fan of Cyndi's voice. I've always listed her as one of the top-5 female voices in the business. But as many may agree, I thought that after her first couple of albums like many other artists she had no powder left in her. But it's nice to be proven wrong. This is a great album.
br /
br /With hints of rap in 'Into the Nightlife' or of Aretha Franklin/Pointer Sisters in 'Give it up' or even of OMD's in 'Echo'. But please do not take this comment in the direction that the album is a pastiche/meltdown of sounds and styles. No. Better to understand it like a description of a wine that has hints of vanilla, berries, and oak, and yet is none of them. It is the particular blend of the ingredients that give the wine its own personality.
br /
br /It's in some way, an album that stops time. It seems that we are back in 1985 and that nothing else has happened: the wars in Iraq and none of Bush administrations; the internet and the dot com bubble; or even, the housing crisis. It brings the optimism from that era to today's doom and gloom. It's such a needed therapy! For a sample of this you only have to listen to Echo with its Limahl-esque sounds of Never Ending Story or Set Your Heart with its 'Love-Cruise' style trumpets.
br /
br /If I had to say a negative would be the over use of the 'neon' sound, but even then it would like saying there's too much guitar on Led Zepellin or too much Piano on Billy Joel.
br /
br /Must songs: Echo, Into the Nightlife, Lay Me Down; Give It Up; Set Your Heart; Rain On Me
br /
br /Do not be tempted to song-picked this album. There's no point.
prepare to be amazed May 27, 2008 Barry Bryson (UK) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Forget Hard Candy this is THE "get to the dancefloor" album by a pop queen this year. Cyndi sounds alive, totally dedicated to each track and more importantly like a viable present day pop star. First single "into the nightlife" is pure joy and just when you can't take any more dancing twelve tracks in she slows it all down with some well judged beautifully sung ballads. The import has re-recorded versions of true colors and time after time which if taken in the right context really work too. Get it and be ahead of everyone else, not out in Europe till September.
well it was about time-WELCOME BACK CYNDI!!!!!:) July 3, 2008 S. J. Pinder (Cornwall,UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
i was amazed with this album...and still am...she has done a fantastic job here,i actually found some tracks mesmerising which i cant say for many album tracks,i have to place this on my all time favourite album list(and very high up too!!)i love it.
br /the tracks-
br /High Mighty-4/5-brings us into the album and it has a great beat that really lures you in.
br /
br /into the nightlife-5/5-possibly my favourite song by her, very good dance track and a classic...i hope it does well in the UK(sure it will).
br /
br /Rocking chair-5/5-another one of her best songs and definately one of my favourite songs of hers...love this song"rock me here, rock me there, rock me in my rocking chair."classic.
br /
br /Lyfe-4/5-very good track and very urban feel.
br /
br /Same ol'Story-4/5-(contains explicit lyrics)very good track and i found it to have a fantastic beat that reminds me of the Dantes Cove theme :).
br /
br /Raging storm-5/5-i find that this track is very retro and i love its style"you can fool some people but you cant fool me" another one of my favourites.
br /
br /Lay me down-5/5-possibly another contender for her best song of all time,TOUCHING and very good pace/beat and ultra-awesome style why not turning into a ballad.
br /
br /give it up-5/5-has a techno feel to it while being very powerful and very good"little by little gonna turn it around"very good track.
br /
br /set your heart-5/5-very powerful another great from the album.
br /
br /Grab a Hold-5/5-very good and again powerful in her vocals.
br /
br /Rain on Me-5/5-a great closure to what has to be the BEST ALBUM OF 2008!!!
br /
br /i love the album loads and find it to be the best album of her entire career.
br /the body acoustic was a very good album but this is the next step ahed of the game and improved on everything she has done...it has even beaten her greatest hits compelation TWELVE DEADLY CYNS(which i love too).

cyndi takes to the dancefloor! and destroys the glitterball! May 31, 2008 Mr. Nathan Armstrong 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
cyndi and madonna arrived on the scene at the same time and for a couple of years it would seem cyndi would overshadow the material girl..hits like "girls just want to have fun" and the all time classic ballads "time after time" and "true colours" had the world transfixed..!
br /
br /however as madonnas sales grew cyndi's dwindled..this is her first studio album for over 13 years and she has taken a leaf out of madonnas book and gone all retro disco..and it works!
br /
br /the voice is as unmistakable as ever!
br /
br /track by track!
br /
br /"high and mighty" has the cyndi trademarks of a pop/dance classic and is bang up to date with production! 8/10
br /
br /"into the nightlife" is a true classic! full of a retro disco sound and a chorus that gets into your brain and won't leave! like madonna or a kylie classic but with her own unmistakable voice! 10/10
br /
br /"rocking chair" is my least favourite track on the album...cyndi does strange vocals (she does it every now and then) i find it annoying 4/10
br /
br /"echo" is true class..great up to date production....stunning vocals and a killer of a chorus and a killer of a chorus 10/10
br /
br /"lyfe" is another track that doesn't quite work..its laid back and a bit jazzy..fast forward please 4/10
br /
br /"same old story" is a strong track..its not hard to see why it has a warning on the cover..a story about life always getting you down.so the swearing has its place and its a great strong but still a bit of a shocker! 7/10
br /
br /"raging storm" is another stomper of a dance track with a pop edge..i think its about celebrities jumping on the charity bandwaggon but doing nothing about it...8/10
br /
br /"lay me down" wouldnt lookm out of place of madonnas "dancefloor" album it is 110 pure dancefloor bliss...but still unmistakeably cyndi 10/10
br /
br /"give it up" is another sure firefloor filler! 9/10
br /
br /"set your heart" takes you back to the 70's heyday of chic...its pure dance heaven...it sounds like candi statons "young hearts run free" delivered an d produced to pure pop perfection!
br /
br /"grab a hold" has the feel of cyndis early work delivered up to date...cyndi sounds fantastic letting rip as only she can..which makes her so unique! 10/10
br /
br /"rain on me" the final track has echoes of many an old cyndi classic pop ballad...like "the world is stone" or "time after time"...10/10
br /
br /the album is a return to form, and apart from a few blips it rivals anything anyone else has done! yes i think she has taken a leaf out of their book but her voice is so stunningly pure and unique..it must surely put cyndi up their with the dance divas!
br /
br /i can't stop playing it
Girl just having fun June 11, 2008 Amanda Richards (ECD, Guyana) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Madonna did it
br /Kylie did it
br /Donna did it
br /Now heeeeeere's Cyndi
br /
br /Dance music is hot again, mostly because of the ladies listed above, and certainly good news for those of us who spent the `80s on the dance floor.
br /
br /This is the tenth studio album from the effervescent singer/songwriter who just wants to have fun, and is best enjoyed at full volume with the bass turned up, the way it was meant to be played.
br /
br /The first US single is "Same Ol' Story", the track that put the [EXPLICIT LYRICS] warning on the album, but this isn't the best song in my opinion. I like "Set Your Heart" which was released as a single in Japan, beginning like the Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman", and then blending into an `80s RB dance track perfectly suited to her vocals.
br /
br /The next single is "Into the Nightlife", another instant favorite with a booming intro that will have your moneymaker shakin'. Also terrific are "Rocking Chair"; the addictive "Echo" that you'll want to hear again and again and "Grab a Hold" which is vintage Lauper.
br /
br /To mix it up a little she includes the mid-tempo "Rain on Me" and "Lyfe", the latter being a little different from anything else on the album, in that the tempo is different, and it's a bit funky (an explicit word here too). "Rain on Me" is very strong lyrically, and a possible single.
br /
br /"I am a robber in the dark
br /Singing about a broken heart
br /Answering whistles in the air
br /Waiting for someone else to care
br /
br /But you can rain on me
br /Yea you can rain on me...."
br /
br /There's absolutely no filler material on this totally fun album, which is recommended for anyone who can take it to the brink.
