5 out of 5 stars Best of Bodom   May 23, 2004

For me, this is easily the most accessible of Children of Bodom's first four albums, and also the one with the most replayability. Where, for me, Hatebreeder and Something Wild had outstanding tracks interspersed with some more mediocre, Follow the Reaper really does not contain one song that would enhance the quality of the album in its absence. The sound is a cross between particularly heavy power metal, with death metal vocals: classic melodic death. Some may argue that this album is more commercial than its predecessors (and successor) in its widened appeal. Certainly the songs contain catchier and more frequent guitar solos (I especially like the one two minutes into Northern Comfort), making the album easier to appreciate on first listen. There is little or no acclimatisation period with this album, and it has the same impact on me now as it did when I first bought it. The musicianship is excellent and the songs are varied enough to retain interest, but similar enough to give the album cohesion. This album is so good that it is almost pointless exercise to list the best songs, and is better to list those that weren't as good: Taste of my Scythe, Kissing the Shadows and the cover Hellion. These are good songs, but compared to modern classics such as Everytime I Die, they are non-starters. Despite these minimal disappointments, this album is the standard all melodic death metal should be judged against. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars The best metal album in the universe.   November 13, 2009
I. courtney (UK)
I'm not usually a fan of this more "extreme" kind of metal. I usually prefer 80's hair metal over this kind of grunty-vocal stuff. BUT MY GOD! The first time I heard this album I felt as if all of my metal dreams had come true. The power, technicality and melody of the guitars, the speed and forceful insistence of the drums, the eerie mystical quality of the keyboards and the esoteric-sounding vocals all added up to one hell of a ride. Every track is brilliant, there's no filler here. This album evokes feelings of a mystical journey into the darkness of the unknown. There is a kind of structured chaos here, I mean the music can at times be so fast and brutal, yet still remains technically perfect. Alexi Laiho (lead guitars and vocals of Bodom) has got to be the most impressive guitarist on the planet. This music is a mixture of black, death, power and neoclassical metal. Bodom really deserve their own genre. Imagine the classical technicality of Yngwie Malmsteen, crossed with the atmosphere, speed and mysticism of Immortal, and you have some idea of what this is going to sound like. If you like Bodom you should also investigate Sinergy, a band featuring 2 members of Bodom.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good   June 17, 2009

I don't normally like albums with constant death vocals/grunts all the way through, so am really surprised with the quality of this album. Put simply, it is classic melodic death metal. The guitar work is absolutely top quality and the melodys are really catchy and from my perspective the vocals fit perfectly. br / br /This is a top quality album with some really stand out songs. Key ammongst them being the excellent Hate me, Every time I die and Follow the reaper. Not quite sure about the cover of WASP's Hellion, (no where near as good as the original) but I think that this only slightly mars the overall album. br / br /If you like Death Metal, you'll love this, and if you don't, give this a chance and like me you will probably be pleasantly surprised.
