| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk review Australian-born soul starlet Sam Sparro has been making ears prick up of late. His savvy blend of soul, funk and modern electronica nods to 70s and 80s legends like Stevie Wonder and Hall and Oates, but Sparro brings a sassy style and modern production ethic that renders his music 21st Century fresh. Armed with a smooth, mercurial voice, Sparro sashays slickly through disco, funk and soul, moving waists with the punchy electro-funk of "Too Many Questions", "Black Gold" and "Cut Me Loose", soaring soul like "Hot Mess" and darker material like "Pocket' and the synth-laden "Sick" (which comes over all Calvin Harris admittedly minus the kitsch, ironic appeal). "Clingwrap" is pop-lite Prince, and there's the occasional slower track like "Waiting For Time" and "Cottonmouth", but mostly this is an upbeat collection for good time people. His Daft Punk-meets-Jamiroquai single "Black Gold" has already earned him deserved comparisons to contemporary blue-eyed soul boys like Jamie Lidell; iSam Sparro/i is assured enough to make him a star.--iDanny McKenna/i

It takes a brave man (or a somewhat foolish manager) to time ones'
br /debut album release with that of Mrs.Ciccone-Ritchie's latest
br /extravaganza but Mr Sparro gets my vote straight off the bat
br /with this scintillating slice of chic, sophisticated electrofunk.
br /
br /Anybody who can manage to weave the word 'discombobulated' into a pop song
br /(trust me it's there in 'Cottonmouth') immediately gains my full attention and respect.
br /
br /It's a very strong first showing indeed, 'Black And Gold' having been
br /around for a little while now as an amuse-bouche to whet our appetites
br /until the whole three courses (plus petit fours and coffee) arrived at the table.
br /
br /And what a damned fine meal we have set out before us here.
br /
br /It's as though a hyperactive schoolboy has been rooting around
br /in his elder brother's 70's and 80's funky disco collection,
br /absorbing the best and ditching the rest.
br /The retro references are witty, cunningly integrated and sharply performed.
br /(I sense an encyclopedic knowledge and enthusiasm for the genre).
br /
br /Mr Sparro's voice shifts comfortably between a rich (and slightly sleazy)
br /baritone and a finely honed falsetto (watch out Mr Shears !) navigating
br /the thirteen numbers in this collection with confidence and authority.
br /
br /This largely uptempo set would feel as at home in the surburban drawing
br /rooms of Purley as it doubtless will in the darker corners of West Hollywood.
br /
br /Highpoints for the yet-to-be initiated include : aforementioned groovetastic single
br /'Black And Gold'; '21st Century Life' for it's punch-in-the-guts slap bass;
br /'Cottonmouth' for it's smart-arse, loping elegance;'Hot Mess' for it's hot hook chorus
br /and personal favorite 'Pocket' which has pretty much everything in it that I want from a pop song.
br /
br /Full Marks Mr Sparro. It's shiny shirt and disco flares for me tonight for sure....
br /....and I want to dance with somebody !

It's a grower! May 9, 2008 R.J.R-M (Kent, UK) 19 out of 31 found this review helpful
After hearing and getting addicted to Black and Gold, I was anxiousto see if Sam Sparro's album would live up to my expectations.
br /If you're buying it solely on the basis of Black and Gold, I would be a bit wary, perhaps wait for another single, because there are no other songs in that vein on the album.
br /However, I've really enjoyed the album as a whole. Despite thinking on first listen that some of it was a bit cheesy - indeed some lyrics are but I don't care - I've found it completely addictive and can't stop listening to it. It's sort of like Happy Hour at a gay club, which I mean in an entirely complimentary way! It's so upbeat and fun, perfect for the summer weather which is attempting to shine through. Brilliant for anyone who likes to sing along, too.
br /Anyone who likes the more upbeat songs of Basement Jaxx and Scissor Sisters would probably like this album in all its electro-disco-funk brilliance.
br /Stand out tracks are Sick, Cottonmouth, Clingwrap and Pocket.
br /If for no other reason than this album comes across as unashamedly fun and a bit different to everything in the R n B saturated charts (which I like some of but think there's a bit too much) it deserves five stars.

I bought this album just before Christmas because it was £2.98 - it seemed rude not to, especially having enjoyed the single 'Black and Gold' so much.
br /
br /At first, I didn't think much of it. The tracks had that eighties feel to them, not unlike Darren Hayes or some slow Scissor Sisters, which I kinda like. I perservered with the CD nad have grown to love it :-) It puts me in boppy, poppy mood thatcha just can't resist, shoulders movin' and fingers snapping'...
br /
br /Highlights of the CD include:
br /
br /Black and Gold
br /I love the way the track progresses from its initial intro beat (which is longer on the album than the single) up to a full blown song. The beat is addictive and the song has set itself aside from other radio tunes to join the realms of *super cool*
br /
br /21st Century Life
br /A finger-clicking classic... Its uber-80s, glam feel is so optimistic and upbeat, you can't help but love it!
br /
br /Pocket
br /A catchy tune followed by an even more catchy chorus.
br /
br /Weak monents - about 90% of albums have some track that is my least favourite (not usually 'disliked' though), and on this album it is:
br /
br /Clingwrap
br /The Americanism of the title gets on my goat in the first instance, and the odd subject choice for the song just leaves me wondering WHY?!?!
br /
br /This album is currently one of my favourites, and will continue to grace my CD played for quite some time. The variety of tracks means it never gets boring - I can't wait to see what he delivers next!

Is this a good album, no, its bloody excellent!. I havent bought an album in ages that I can truely say that I like every song. If you are a funk loving person, who loves a bit of the eighties this is definatley for you. Theres a bit of an Erasure/ boygeorge vibe... in a good way of course and its great to dance too. I cant stop playing it! well done Sam, looking forward to seeing what else you can do?
