One of the most Under-Appreciated artists in the business ASHANTI! She's been out of the music scene for 4 years, not out of choice but due to circumstances! In that time she's experienced many things, and has developed vastly, vocally, lyrically (she writes ALL of her Material!), sonically, she's upped her game to another level! The result of all this 'THE DECLARATION!' The way the tracks are arranged she tells a kind of story, which you get once you listen through! br /The Tracks: br / br /1.Intro-A good opening explains whats been going on, production is tiight! br / br /2.The Way That I Love You-This song is just excellent, this track alone would be enough to make you buy the album! Starts with a mezmerising/haunting Piano playing...The Bass,The Lyrical Delivery, The Vocals, and The Production are all ON-POINT! She totally Nails this track 5/5 br / br /3.You're Gonna Miss-A track which is a sort of RnB/Pop mesh, very radio friendly, the kind of track you just wanna move to the beat, Very infectious! 4/5 br / br /4.So Over You-HOTTNESS! A Rodney (Darkchild) Jerkins track with killer up-tempo beats. Another track you wanna move to! 5/5 br / br /5.Stuggle-You can just feel this track wholeheartedly! You have to hear the full song to really appreciate it! It's really relatable for both men/women! Even though all the tracks are fire, this has to be a top fav without a doubt! Lyrically/Vocally consider it well and truely DELIVERED! 5/5 br / br /6.Girlfriend-I would deem this track solid RnB! Very sensual and seductive. Let's just say if someone was singing this to you (male perspective), you would make them your Girlfriend! Or if you were singing it to someone (female perspective) you would definately win someone over. It just has an effect on you! 5/5 br / br /7. Things You Make Me Do-Oh My God this track is just pure sexiness, extatic, orgasmic! lol With a dark enchanting tone! Ashanti and Robin Thick gel incredibly well together. ..."run Ashanti run you know i wanna chase it!.." 5/5 br / br /8.In These Streets-HOT! Has an old school feel to it. A track that you can just jam along to whenever! I like the message she's giving out as well 4/5 br / br /9.Good Good-This is a club banger more for the ladies out there! Although Good Good could be used for the guys too haha! It's a anthem! The production is top notch JD made! Ashanti's swagger is ridiculous on this one! 4/5 br / br /10.Body On Me- Ashanti, Akon Nelly! Come on it is without a doubt a radio hit! It may take some time to grown on some but once it does you just love it! A real summer tune to groove to! 4/5 br / br /11.Mother-This is the new "Dear Mama".Babyface did his thing on this track. The lyrics are so heartfelt and promising. GREAT VOCALS! The only thing that people comment on is the length but otherwise 5/5 br / br /12.Shine-Reminds us a bit of "Beautfiul" by Christina Aguilera.Very inspirational and Ashanti came out of her comfort zone tried something new and she did her thing! 4/5 br / br /13.The Declaration-What better way to close out an album than a track like this! The production is SICK! 7 Aurelius really outdid himself this time. When she sings " I'm still Here, I'm Still here..." you better believe it she aint going nowhere! In-your-face declaring things she's been through, overcome and now nothing will stop her now! 5/5 br / br /14. Hey Baby (After THe Club) BONUS TRACK- 7 Aurelius Mario Winans produced track, with a slight 'Last Night'(P. Diddy) feel. Having said this it's just as good but just as different! A real banger for the clubs! 4/5 br / br /This album is just amazing! NOT ONE of the songs on it can be deemed 'filler tracks' a lot of single material! 'The Declaration' could be said to be on par/or even rivaling her Debut 'Ashanti'! It offers a lot of variety from the other RnB albums that are out right now, seriously you really won't be disappointed with it! Get this album people! br /

5 out of 5 stars Her finest album 2 date   June 21, 2008

THIS ALBUM IS SO SICK, I LOVE THIS ALBUM, IF I GET A CHANCE 2 I LISTEN 2 IT ALL THE TIME. NOW HERE IS A BREAKDOWN OF THE ALBUM. br /The intro is really good it tells her fans why she has been away for four years and what she has experienced in that time. br /The way that i love you- Great first single, but the video is creepy (Dont watch it on your own, that's all i am saying)Go on 2 youtube 2 watch the video and you will know what i am talking about. br /You're gonna miss- On this song she uses t-pain's vocoder effect on her voice which makes this song even more likeable. br /So over you- Another great song, in my opionion this song sounds similar 2 her song you're gonna miss, but who said that was a bad thing. br /Sruggle-Love this song, the emotion really shows in her voice. br /THESE NEXT 2 SONGS ARE MY FAVOURITE: br /Girlfriend-This song is fire, ashanti sounds great br /Things you make me do feat robin thicke- There voices really work well together, lovely soulful song, one of my favourites on the album. br /In these streets-Another great song br /Good good-another favourite song of mine br /Body on me- this song is sick, but i thnk it was meant to be her boo nelly's song br /ANOTHER 2 FAVOURITE SONGS OF MINE ARE: br /Mother- A lovely heartfelt ballad decaited to her mum. br /Shine-GREAT beat and a great song. br /The declartion- Great song again you can hear the emotion in her voice. br /Hey baby-This song is so sick, single material, a great way to end a fantasict album. br /Will someone please tell me if ashanti is friends with Ja rule, because she does not thank him on her album sleeve. br /YOU NEED TO COP THIS ALBUM br /

4 out of 5 stars Solid, consistant album   May 31, 2008

It's been almost 4 years since we heard anything from Ashanti. With decreasing sales and singles peaking lower and lower in the charts this album needs to reverse the trend. Overall this album is pretty solid. With her 2nd and 3rd albums, there were a few really great stand-out tracks but the most of the albums were not great. The Declaration may be missing an amazing lead-off track but each track is good so looking at the album over-all, it is a lot better than many other albums out there at the minute. br /The Declaration has a slightly different feel to it than Ashanti's previous albums due, in part, to the fact that this is the first album that has an entire new set of producers. Seven Aurelius (responsible for most of Ashanti's biggest hits) produces 2 tracks, 'The Things You Make Me Do, a sensual mid-tempo duet with Robin Thicke and 'The Declaration' one of the stand-out tracks on the album, combining a drum beat and a string arrangement. Pretty different to what's out there ta the minute New producers include Rodney Jerkins who produces another of the albums stand-outs 'So Over You' a beat-heavy mid-tempo about being fed-up with you partner. Jermaine Dupri produces another mid-tempo which has a very catchy melody which keeps the track on repeat. Akon is on board with potential second single 'Body On Me' a catchy, summery, feel-good song with Nelly. Long-time ballad producer Babyface produces 'Mother', a ballad about Ashanti's mother (not surprisingly). New producer L.T. Hutton produces 4 tracks, lead single 'The Way That I Love You' and another of the albums stand-outs 'You're Gonna Miss' which uses the popular vocorder effect. br /Overall this album is a lot more 'together' than Ashanti's previous albums and definately shows that her vocals have improved even more. The album is mostly made up of mid-tempo's (both beat heavy, and lighter ones) with 2 ballads/down-tempos. The album is lyrically a lot tighter than most of the other RB out there at the minute. The only down-side is that the album is missing that obvious, killer lead single which may affect sales, atleast in the short term but don't be put off by this. The album is still full of music which is great and just different enough to consider buying even if you're already getting your female Rb fix from Rihanna or Beyonce as this album has a different feel to it. It is doubtful that this album will return Ashanti to her former a status in the charts but that will have little to do with the musics quality and more to do with poor lead single choice and late promo!!

4 out of 5 stars Laid Back, Mellow RB!   October 3, 2009
miss-independent
This is a very mellow RB album with mid-tempo tracks that stray away from fast up-tempo club jams or party vibes. For the club junkie or dance fanatic, this is not quite that type of bouncy RB funk. It's a very different sound as compared to her other albums so it was quite a surprise when I first listened to it. This 14-track Japan Import includes the bonus track "Hey Baby (After The Club)", lyrical booklet with words, and obi-strip - a definite bonus! br / br /Featured artists are Nelly, Akon, and Robin Thicke. "Things You Make Me Do" 3:22 featuring Robin Thicke has a nice soothing laid back sensual style to kick back with your lover, or alone. If you enjoy candles, this is a great song to set the mood right. Ashanti's vocals seem improved and very soft on the ears as compared to other songs. br / br /My favorite track is "Body On Me" featuring Nelly Akon for it's electronica, rap, and hip-hop mesh. The beats are catchy, funky, and phenomenal. For me, it feels it's a "most definite" booster to feel uplifted or in the mood to dance. It's positive vibes, hip-hop undertones, and production are very appealing! br / br /Another great song for those who like to snuggle with a lover or fantasize would be "Girlfriend" as it has references to how "I'd give all of me to you... I'd let you touch everything...". "The Way I Love You" has a more soulful rich sound --it's a "you and her" type song. Songs like "So Over You" were a much better style to show--giving better attitude, bouncy beats, and faster tempos. br / br /A nice jam,"You're Gonna Miss" has references to the heart aching, feeling weak, and wanting her lover back but knowing in the end a departure can be and will cause a loss for him. The vocals have some electronic effects that I thought were excellent and would have loved to hear more. Some lyrics, "But I ain't gonna stress about it anymore/And I ain't gonna cry another night alone/Your gonna miss this chick right here/Your gonna miss this chick I swear." br / br /Overall, the cover has a dance look so I was expecting dance tracks. Instead this is a nice mellow RB album for the fans who already enjoy her style. Having all of her albums I don't know if I'd call this her best from my personal tastes. The bounce, hip-hop, and darker edge are not as prevalent. Featured artists are dropped to a minimum, and the mood is so so mellow. It's hard to feel funky as it may not boost moods to feel in the mood to dance or get down to party. Either way, her declaration is quite evident: to express herself, to be upfront, and more personal through her music. br / br /To mention more positives, "In These Streets" has a much soulful sound, very rich, alive, and great. The song, "Good Good" has a nice hip-hop element as other rap stars are heard in the background. The lyrical booklet has all the words to the song. Apparently, her writing has improved with beautiful songs dedicated to her mother-very touching, and a nice track titled, "Shine" very inspiring and positive--both very nicely done! br / br /The bonus track is "Hey Baby (After The Club)" featuring some guys in the background. This is not the fast high energy paced dance tracks with electronica, bass or bounce. This is not quite that style. It's just a repetitive type sound with references to the club of wanting to leave with that special someone. It's a much better track than many of the others for it's theme. The beats are mid to up-tempo. Ratings: 4 stars. br / br /I recommend the Japan Import for the bonus track, words to the songs, and overall quality. If you remove that song, then it becomes a totally mellow slow mid-tempo album.
