Amazon.co.uk Review
In the days when boy bands played their own instruments, Spandau Ballet--a bunch of pretty boys from north London with kilts, shoulder pads, bad 1980s hair, eyeliner and unmistakable good looks--caused quite a stir and soon had both major record labels and teenage girls monitoring their every move. Major-league players among the New Romantic movement, the five piece lived the high life and churned out hit after hit between 1980 and 1986. This compilation features pretty much all of their offerings ("Gold", "True", "Lifeline", "Highly Strung")--some more memorable than others. Gold's sleeve notes boldly proclaim "...this is where it all began. Club culture, endless nocturnal adventures, white boys high on soul and funk-making electric dance music which moves the city." It's hard to imagine music like this doing that now--on the cover they look like a bunch of old guys in polo necks--but it was the 80s. --Ronita Dutta

5 out of 5 stars An absolute classic - these songs shaped the 80's   March 4, 2000

Truely a classic album, this collection of Spandau Ballets Greatest hits has it all. The incredible voice of Tony Hadley at his greatest, combined with the talents of the whole band creates a sound which we all picture as classic 80's. How many of you can say that Gold and Through the Barricades didn't touch you back then? Well this CD brings it all back. An absolute must buy!

Well i think it's all been said by Matt, this cd doe's bring out the best in Tony Hadley's voice. It's a great cd by a great group 'Through the barricades' was a fantastic song which sent out a lot of emotions which i would say was down to the brillient song writting by Gary Kemp. I just wish i was a bit older when they were still together as they are my favourite group now and i am only 16 yearys old. So i would have to say it is a must for any Spandau Ballet fan.

3 out of 5 stars Dated but still good Spandau Ballet   April 17, 2009

Spandau Ballet came out after the best of British pop music in the 90's. Therefore their task was sort of difficult - take this observation in context - they had prior to their released songs a decade of The Style Council, The Cure, Paul Young, Roxy Music, apart of Culture Club, Frankie goes to Hollywood and of course The Police and Duran Duran. I would say that they are close to Duran Duran but the competition is unfair. The 80's - 90's can be pinpointed as very good time for British pop music. To fit or to produce commercial music at this time was a challenge. Then if you have this in mind, you could understand the few (outstanding) tunes of Spandau Ballet. I bought this CD because the compilation is not as attractive as the re-mastered work done on the beautiful tune of True, the good tune of Gold, the superb Only when you live, one of the most swingful tunes I have heard in I'll fly for you, the highly melodic Round and Round and then the romantic Through the Barricades. Not a waste of money, for sure.
