Amazon.co.uk Review If the mark of the skilful Lothario is the one who knows to always tell his lover what she wants to hear, surely Def Jam's RB sensation Ne-Yo--aka Los Angeles singer-songwriter Shaffer Chimere Smith--is one of the greatest of them all. On third album IYear of the Gentleman/I, Chimere channels his hitmaking talents into a suite of RB songs that more respectful than rampant in their approach to the romancing. "Single" is a song that reaches out to all the lonely girls, Ne-Yo promising "I'll be your boyfriend til the song goes off", while the Stargate-produced "Miss Independent", lit up by neon synthesisers, suggests Smith isn't too concerned with his own machismo to test out flipping the traditional gender roles, serenading a girl who's a player in her own right: "Everything she got, you bet she bought it". The album is at its best with the central, two-song movement of "Why Does She Stay" and "Fade Into the Background"--the former, Ne-Yo questioning his own neglectful nature over a backdrop of shimmering keys, the latter a sombre piece that finds our narrator accepting the news his lover has found another with a rare, heart-rending magnanimity. i--Louis Pattison/i

Year Of The Gentleman
br /I read the reviews - some rated this highly, others ripped it to shreds! Truth is, all of us have personal tastes and this might not suit everyone, especially if you avidly preferred his previously style. As it was, I bought this anyway. Hey, at under £7, what did I have to lose? If it really was rubbish, then I had an expensive drinks coaster. I have played this CD many times since it arrived, and have thoroughly enjoyed all but one of the tracks (Lie to me) but then that was simply because I thought anyone wanting to be lied to was a wimp ;-) The beat is catchy, lyrics strike a chord with your own experiences eg not going to sleep on an argument, and the bass kicks in really well. Give it a chance, and judge for yourself. I doubt you will regret it.

Please to anyone thinking of not buying this album because of the rather silly negative reviews above then please reconsider. I received this cd today and even though im not the biggest rnb fan this album is head and shoulders above any of his other work and ALL other rnb out there at the moment. Just perfection!

What is up wiv you lot out there??? This is brilliant, ain`t you got ears all you bores who dislike this excellent album? Crikey, I bought it last week and loved it, went out the following week and bought Ne-Yo`s first two albums and guess what? I enjoyed listening to them as well. Awesome music from awesome Ne-Yo. I loved the song Closer so bought his CD and I haven't been disappointed by it at all. It is wonderful and his voice absolutely melts into you. There is a good mixture of slow and faster songs and I can't stop listening to it in the car and if I have only got a short journey I just can't decide which song to put on cos I have so many favourites on there. Defo buy it. KT.
Well done Mr Smith!! September 22, 2008 Elliott Jarvis (UK) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Obviously this album was bought with high expectations and Neyo deserves all the praise for it. Like his first effort 'In my own words', Neyo Expresses alot more of his smooth sides with tracks such as Mad, Single and my favorite Part Of the List. The other genres on the CD fit well with the contemporary RB feel of the album. Another Favorite is 'Stop This World' - very Michael Jackson-ish sound to this one but is my fav track of the album (looking forward for neyo an jacko's colaberation!!)Theres alot of hits on this album, I cannot see how any RB/soul lover can slate this CD, Its Wicked!!
