5 out of 5 stars This Is Personal   October 18, 2009

The the world can be a cold and unforgiving place sometimes. br / br /Ms Houston has had her fair share of glory's glare but has br /doubtless also stared into the darkness of the abyss. br /That her instincts have not always been a reliable guide is br /evident in a career which has, to my ears and eyes, never br /seen her quite comfortable in her own skin. br / br /Slave to the 80's dancing-disco-diva-machine; the br /tight squeeze of Hollywood in the 90's; the lacklustre br /last two albums 'My Love Is Your Love' and 'Just Whitney'. br / br /One of the great voices of our time needed a whole br /lot more nurture than both the industry and her br /more fickle devotees were prepared to give her. br / br /Finally that voice has found a home. br /'I Look To You' is a revelation. br /It is the recording she was born to make. br / br /It is crucial, if you have not yet heard the album, br /that you disregard observations that her voice is no br /longer a worthy instrument. That she reaches for those br /stratospherically high notes less often is eminently br /sensible for a singer approaching her autumnal years br /with dignity. The tone has deepened; the middle and br /lower registers now carry the weight of both dynamic br / power and expression. It is gloriously unforced. br / br /She has chosen some great songs for her renaissance. br / br /Two of the finest torch-songs of her late-flowering br /are here. Mr Kelly's marvellous 'I Look To You' and br /Diane Warren's 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength' are br /both given blisteringly heart-felt emotional performances. br /Hard but beautiful truths. br / br /Up-tempo energy isn't lacking either : Mr Russell's br /'A Song For You' is given a treatment every bit as br /good as her account of Ms Lennox's 'Step By Step'. br /It is a stomping and storming highlight. br /So too the wonderfully funky gospel energy of 'For The Lovers'. br / br /That Ms Houston is back is good reason to celebrate. br /Nothing to apologise for and certainly nothing to forgive. br /After all these years this is the real deal. br / br /Essential. br / br / br /

5 out of 5 stars So worth the wait!!! This is going to be an album and a half...   August 19, 2009

So Folks... I now have the album in my CD player and you know what? I am so excited Whitney is back!! br / br /Yes her voice has changed from a few years back but we all evolve and change. This to me is not a problem. Whitney still has it. She can belt out a tune and still evoke the feelings that she first did back in 1985. Whitney is a true star. And I'm so glad she is back. br /My thoughts of the tracks so far are: br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** Million Dollar Bill ** br /Upbeat and thumping track. The first single of the album and I can feel this and hear this in the clubs and I am not even a clubber or a fan of clubs. It's got me moving. Such a funky beat and Whitney's strong vocals are going to have people dancing to this. Infectious and happy. Look out for some hot remixes of this popping up. I have heard a couple already and they are good. This track puts me in a good mood. That is what music to me is all about evoking feelings and Whitney does this. br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** Nothin' But Love ** br /Biographical mid tempo track full of attitude. Very soulful and punchy. br / br /------------------------------------ br / br /** Call You Tonight ** br /Written by singer songwriter Johnta Austin and produced by Stargate. I heard Johnta's demo version and it's great. Whitney's version is fab. Another mid tempo foot tapping tune with a slightly chilled element. Has a romantic slant and one of my favs so far. br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** I look to you** br /Well... This is utterly beautiful. A stunning beginning with a simple piano key and Whitney building up to those famous crescendos and strong strong vocals we all know and grew up with. This song is uplifting and inspirational. Something haunting about it especially knowing Whitney's troubled past. Whitney is certainly holding her notes and the runs are beautiful. This seems like a difficult song to sing and she pulls it off. Written by R Kelly who is a professional in his own right. br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /***Like I never left*** br /I heard this over a year ago on a London Radio station and hated it. I thought it was weak and I don't hate any of Whitney's music normally but since I have heard the final track finished I have to say it has grown on me and has a summer feel to it. This was described by Clive Davis Whitney as an island song and I can see what they mean. Mid tempo and happy. The track compliments the rest of the songs that have made the album. Certainly grew on me and quite like it now. It's also like she is singing to Clive and her fans that she is back where she needs to be and where she belongs....ruling the charts. Like she never left! br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** A song for you ** br /This makes you want to move. Starts off slow with a simple piano and Whitney's distinctive vocals and then BAM.... The beats kick in and Whitney lets go. Her only cover track on the album and she has also covered this track on many concerts back in the day but certainly not like this. On the first play of this I loved it. It was so unexpected and a nice surprise. Upbeat, uplifting and a sure hit for the Whitney fans out there. You can still hear the passion and power in Whitney's voice. For this track alone I would buy the album. She is definitely back!! br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** I didn't know my own strength ** br /A true Whitney ballad with a gentle soft start and nice piano intro, then her vocal starts to soar and lift you up along with it. I have to say I didn't like it the first couple of listens but it's such a grower. Sit back and let the lyrics and music lift you. Fantastic song and simple. Less is really more. br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** Worth it ** br /A modern and soulful RB song. Contemporary but classic Whitney. I suggest you turn the lights low and put this on with your other half and just chill. Very nice.... br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** For the lovers ** br /Another mid / up tempo foot tapping beat. Possibly the weakest track on the album for me and more like filler than a single but it's a grower. br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** I got you ** br /A slow but defining beat and again makes you want to move. Another strong vocal from Whitney and likable track. Reminds me of I bow out. Liking it very much. br / br /------------------------------------- br / br /** Salute ** br /Written by R Kelly. Quite a military sounding beat and another favourite of mine. She sings: "Don't call it a come back, I have been here for years.... Through all the drama and the pain and all the tears..." Very positive lyrics with an infectious hook and a modern up to date track giving all the new artists a run for their money. Excellent track. br / br /There seems to be an excellent mixture of mid / up tempo and ballads we have come to love and expect from Whitney's past albums and the songs all have a feel good vibe, so something for everyone. It's modern and contemporary yet has all the classic hallmarks from old Whitney there. The album is strong, Whitney's voice is strong and Whitney has not deviated with fancy and heavy productions. Her passion in the vocals comes through. Clive and Whitney have certainly put loads of time and effort into this and she is defiantly back. br / br /I have read interviews where it took 3 years to complete this album. Whitney quoted saying "a labor of love" she said: "I hope that these songs stay with you for a lifetime." br /Clive said "You won't forget it after you hear it," Davis said, calling the album a labor of love for all involved. "There is a song on this album which is called 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength' and it really speaks for Whitney. She tumbled but she didn't crumble." br / br /The only downside I can think of is there are only 11 songs. Wish there were more. I hope Arista release a deluxe version with more tracks. br / br /Welcome back Whitney!! You were missed! br / br /:)

Just received my copy of Whitneys new album and completed my first listen. In my opinion it is class. I love every track which is most unusual for me. I'm one of those music fans who is very critical re quality, someone who picks out the classic's and disregards the lesser tracks when I buy an album. I've read reviews from the UK and the States and to me it seems like some writers have it in for Whitney because of her non musical failings. Give the girl a break she's back in the groove. Don't stand still in the past enjoy the now. I might be wrong but I believe the majority of music lovers will really enjoy and buy this album and the follow up concerts will be a sell out. Welcome back Whitney thank you soul diva. br / br /Favorite tracks br / br /Million Dollar Bill br /I look to you br /Like I never left

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally charged and soulful   October 19, 2009

'I Look To You' sees Whitney return with an album packed full of strong songs about overcoming setbacks, finding new inspiration and celebrating the best things in life. Her voice is far less strident than it has been, allowing emotion to seap through and giving new insight into the person behind the 'diva' label. br / br /The album's high points are the upbeat tracks 'A Song For You', 'For The Lovers' and the first UK single 'Million Dollar Bill'. All three give Whitney's vocals room to breathe but 'A Song For You', in particular, works a treat. The slow build up suddenly explodes into hilariously campy disco territory that is both unexpected and massively uplifting. br / br /'Nothing But Love' is an exceptionally clear-sighted track that tackles old demons by embracing them, accepting the past for what it was and moving on. br / br /Ballad 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength' is not the 'Diane Warren by numbers' retread it at first appears to be. Certainly, it lacks the killer hook that made the 80s power ballads classics of their kind. Yet Whitney's vocals again win through - not by blasting you out your seat but through sensitive phrasing and clearly heartfelt emotion. The same is true of title track 'I Look To You', which is moving right from the very first line. br / br /Early warnings that this album would have tracks written produced by Akon and R.Kelly filled me with the fear that there would be some hugely misguided attempt to make Whitney too RnB and 'current'. I was relieved to note that both have written interesting, appropriately feisty songs that advance Whitney's sound without sounding at all out of place. 'Salute' closes the album on a terrific high: glossy production and cutting lyrics that are given lethal delivery. br / br /Whitney may not have written these songs but they are carefully chosen to showcase her talent and to share with the listener where she is in her life. As such, this is a personal and introspective album. That Whitney sounds superb is not a surprise; that Whitney can touch your heart is a revelation.

5 out of 5 stars I wanted her to be still at her best, so sad for her she's not x   October 25, 2009

I was eagerly awaiting Whitney's come back album, I'm not really disappointed but still sad for her that her once amazing instrument, her voice, is tarnished. Of course lets all be sensible she is older now voices deteriorate with age, usually deepen. We can't expect her to sound as she did in her twenties!! I bought this on Monday instantly loved "I Look To You", so beautiful soulful, that's what you can't do when you are younger, real feeling in the song in my opinion. I'm really loving most of the album now, once you've listened a few times, which you have to do with most new albums, those who have dismissed her at the first hearing are missing something, shame I think some people just like to knock be negative. Still that's their loss in life!! br / br /I say go Whitney lets hope this is the start of her new career, I've always loved her, she still has an amazing voice. Also nice to see an older lady, I'm one, still doing it, life's not just for the younger generation.
