5 out of 5 stars SHEER CLASS - SUPERB ALBUM   September 23, 2008

David Gilmour once again shows his incredible talent, by collating an exceptional live set, that will delight both Floyd fans and those(if any)who lean to his solo work. Poignantly, this album features Rick on keyboards, and also vocals (he solo's on Comfortably Numb, covering Roger's pieces)so is a lasting memory as his last recording. br / br /Now,what makes this album so great, is not only the superb balance of songs over the Floyd era (from Astronomy, Echoes, Dark Side, WYWH through The Wall and ending up with Division Bell, and the best of his more recent solo album "On an Island", but the production quality and final arrangement are amazing for a live album. br / br /The Floyd tracks are perfectly reproduced, with the exception of "Shine On" which starts as per the original, but the chorus is simply David, Guitar and Piano - it works beautifully!. Comfortably Numb is probably even better than the "Pulse" version, with Gilmour squealing the guitar through the epic ending riff - superb. The only Floyd track missing which I would have expected to hear is "Sorrow". br / br /As mentioned, the solo set list misses out completley David's first two albums and focuses on a selection of tracks from On an Island - tracks I have slated on this website for being dull and boring, yet on this new live album they seem to have come to life and fit in with the set so well. br / br /Live albums by the nature need some crowd sing - along to the opening verses, but the Polish crowd listen intentley and clap politely, with no oversinging the opening verses!(Wish you were here comes to mind where at Earls Court the crowd can be heard singing every word - on this album silence!) br / br /Some people ask why Gdansk?, well Gilmour was invited to play here by the former Solidariy movement to 50,000 people against the historical backdrop of the Gdansk shipyards in Poland to celebrate the 26th anniversary of the Solidarity movement. br / br /The band are backed by the 40-strong string section of the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Zbigniew Preisner. br / br /So to sum up, all in all in my opinion this is the best sounding, produced live Gilmour/Floyd album. With a full orchestra, the music is breathtaking, his vocals strong and powerful. Well worth adding to the collection. br /

And I thought the best live rendition of 'Comfortably Numb' was on "The Wall - Live", this is awesome. It's not the same, it can't be, there's a few key players missing, but it's great on the ears. The whole album is excellent. However, why did it have to be recorded in Gdansk, and not here in the UK? I'd love to have been there.

This set is worth the price of admission just to hear Dave dust off Fat Old Sun, which was a shameful omission from PF's Echoes collection. A beautiful melody which is played acoustically but just when you think it's over Dave plays a blistering electric solo. Just awesome!

This is probably one of the best produced live albums I've heard but that is irrelvant beside the sheer quality of the music. A big part of the songs are all of the latest Dave Gilmour album 'The Island' and I have to say they sound soooo much better live. On the studio album there is quite a low key , almost sad feeling. Live on this CD they fit very well instead with the older Pink Floyd ones. I think my studio album will be quietly filed away. The Pink Floyd songs are just outstanding - the version of Comfortably Numb is just brilliant. I had it cranked up in the car and its just a great soundtrack for driving. Other standouts are Time, Echoes (all 25 minutes of it..) and what for me is one of their best songs 'Wish You Were Here' - made even more aposite with the death of Rick Wright br /A great album and a potential classic

I was a bit dubious because I don't think live albums work often, however this proved otherwise. Well worth a try.I enjoyed it.
