Amazon.co.uk Review Success came fast for The Killers, maybe too fast. The impossibly hooky ldquo;Mr Brightsiderdquo; from their debut, coupled with faultless synth anthem ldquo;Somebody Told Merdquo;, turned them into the most ubiquitous band in the world overnight and had them batting away Glastonbury headline offers before the emHot Fuss/em campaign was even over. emSam's Town/em followed all too quickly, trying to stylistically catch up with their status as stadium rock giants in waiting, but like their debut was really only carried by a couple of strong singles. Which would make this the perfect--or necessary--time to deliver the masterpiece the world expects. By shamelessly cherry-plundering the number 1 acts of the 80s not only have they managed to dramatically shunt the concept of filler from the record, but every track acts like it's performing last on emTop Of The Pops/em circa 1987. Result. From the sparkling Pet Shop Boys obedience of ldquo;Humanrdquo; to the massive Human League via Starship chorus of ldquo;Spacemanrdquo;, the Paul Simonrsquo;s Graceland as done by Talking Heads on ldquo; This Is Your Liferdquo; to the bang-on Cure desolation of ldquo;Goodnight, Travel Wellrdquo; they barely put a foot wrong, though the saxophone ânrsquo; steel drum funk of ldquo;Joy Riderdquo; does momentarily test the patience. Their mission to become the next U2 continues apace and infiltrates most nooks on emDay Age/em, see especially Brandonrsquo;s very best Bono on ldquo;A Dustland Fairytalerdquo; and ldquo; This Is Your Liferdquo;. Third time lucky--they really do come very close to that masterpiece. em--James Berry/em

How The Killers Have Grown January 4, 2009 Hunter (Carmarthen) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
The first thing I will say about this album is that you have to give it 3 or 4 listens before you can really appreciate how good it is. When I first listened to it I thought I might be disapointed as none of the tracks seemed to stand out to me as they had done instantly on Hot Fuss and Sam's Town.
br /
br /However after hearing it a few times I can say that this is without a doubt The Killers best album yet - and that is saying something.
br /What is new in this album is that a lot of the songs are written about the personal lives of members of the band. For example "A Dustland Fairytale" which tells the story of how Brandon Flowers' parent's met and his mother's battle with cancer.
br /
br /This makes the album very full of emotion which is something that The Killers havn't really done before, and they have pulled it off brilliantly. The Singles "Human" and "Spaceman" are both very good tracks, more in the style of earlier Killers work. But the true beauty of this album is, as I said, in the slower, more emotional tracks. My personal favorite is probably "A Dustland Fairytale". I also really like "The World We Live In" and "I Can't Stay".
br /
br /If you are a fan of the Killers then no doubt you will already have bought this album. If not then I would strongly recommend it as there is something on here for everyone.
br /
br /One Final Point: The Track "Goodnight, Travel Well" is truly breathtaking. It was written about the death of Dave Keunig's mother and it really captures the emotions of anyone who has lost a loved one. The Album is worth it just to hear this song. You won't regret getting this Album.
A grower ... December 4, 2008 Mr. S. Gomersall (York,UK) 21 out of 27 found this review helpful
Being honest I was horrified when I first played the latest effort from my favourite band. At times it sounds so different from Hot Fuss and Sams Town , but that wasn't the problem. It was the instruments and production they had chosen. "Is that the saxophone from some long forgotten Sade track I can hear ? Yes it is" ... "Those drums sound like they came from Club Tropicana by Wham!" ... in other words , where Hot Fuss took it's influences from the best of 80's pop ( New Order / early Duran Duran ), they are using some sounds here that remind you of the worst from that decade. The production by Stuart Price ( Madonna - Confessions On a Dancefloor ) is very clever in places but too lightweight overall.

br /Still , I persevered as I love the band so much and there were a clutch of songs I loved right away. 'Human' is gorgeous. The best song the Pet Shop Boys never wrote , sung by a much better singer than Neil Tennant. 'Losing Touch' is classic Killers. 'Spaceman' is a fantastic rollercoaster of fun rock and should be a huge hit when released as a single. It took about eight listens and eventually I came to love every track except for the final one 'Goodnight , Travel Well' , which has well meaning lyrics but it's a case of "spot the tune" ( don't try too hard , there isn't one .. ). When you get over the change in style , the strength of the songwriting here really shines through. I suspect this album will get mixed reviews from many people as there are so many songs that grow on you and not so many that hit you right away. Give it a chance though and I suspect you'll end up loving it as much as I do , there are not many bands in the world as big as this one willing to take as many musical risks by changing styles so frequently. Against the odds , they've pulled it off again.
You will eventually love this CD! May 7, 2009 J Kim-O'Connor (London, United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Watch The Killers perform live at the Coachella Festival on YouTube (kindly uploaded by bgibb), and you cannot help but love Day Age, and also Sam's Town, if you did not already! Its hard to explain, but their songs make sense when you see it performed live. Watching "This is Your Life" performed by Brandon and Co, especially when the 50,000+ crowd start to wave their arms in unison, it will send chills down your spine! You will really get addicted to the new album. And I must admit that when I first heard the album, I was a bit dismayed as none of the songs catch you like Mr Brightside or Somebody Told Me, which was the same for Sam's Town. All the albums are so different from each other and that takes a bit getting used to. But when you watch their live performance at Coachella, even just on YouTube, its hard to say which song you like best. They all are soooo good when performed live. And you'll be glad to have the CD!
Awesome November 24, 2008 Amicie (United Kingdom) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I finally got my hands on this album today. I've listened to it three times now, and absolutely love it. The songs are polished and accomplished and really showcase Brandon Flowers' superb voice (vey Bowie-esque in places). For me, the Killers music has a real "feel good" vibe and this is especially true of this latest album. By any standards, a 5* album.
Worth every penny! March 6, 2009 J. SCARROTT (uk) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although this album wasn't such an instant hit with me as 'Hot Fuss' or 'Sam's Town', 'Day and Age' is definitely one of the best albums I have heard for a long time. 'Day and Age' is definitely a grower; with each listen, I love it more and more.
br /Personal favourites of mine include 'Human', and 'A Dustland Fairytale'as they are so catchy and different to any stuff that the band have done before. In my opinion, what is so special about this band is that they evolve with each album, changing their sound yet still keeping the same style and characteristics. I was lucky enough to see The Killers live last week and 'Spaceman' was truly a highlightas it got everyone dancing and singing along. My advice for you is to bear with this album as although it may not be an instant hit like the previous two, it is definitely just as good if not better. Brilliant.
