Best Kiss Compilation to date December 19, 2008 G. ADAIR 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Good compilation this, but it could and should have been released decades ago; a glance at the track listing confirms that this covers (mostly) the golden era of the pre 1980's, and Kiss have been trading on the concept of these iconic alter-ego characters they inhabit since the very beginning - in fact that's a large part of what was so appealing about them when they first appeared.
br /
br /The set has a good selection of songs, not just the usual Kiss standards - which is something Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have been guilty of for a long, long time: the assumption that their fans only want to hear the classics, not the offbeat and unusual album tracks. Just check out the plethora of live albums and you'll see the same old songs coming up time after time. They even admitted it themselves on the MTV Unplugged video, recounting in an interview how they had attended Kiss Conventions across the country and had been surprised how often they were asked to play really obscure stuff.
br /So on Ikons this has been remedied, and the inclusion of the alternate material gives a fuller flavour of what Kiss was really about back in the early days. A much wider array of styles and character.
br /
br /Paul and Gene have always exerted their prominence over the group in every respect: both in terms of the music and the business (it's no mistake that all the album covers always have Gene and Paul's faces in the most prominent positions), and to some degree this seems to be justified through their dominant drive and ambition for the group, but it's good to hear the other two guys getting the spotlight on Ikons. Peter Criss, clearly a jazz and RB man, always leaned a different way from the others - a fact which contributed to his eventual departure from the group - and his CD here is peppered with ballads and swingbeat rhythms, but it's a good set regardless. He always had a great singing voice, raspy and husky, not a million miles away from Rod Stewart, and many of his songs really stand up (e.g. I Can't Stop the Rain). Ace, on the other hand, has long been regarded as the wild card of the group, a man with both talent and character in spades, and who frustratingly never lived up to his early promise as a solo artist after leaving Kiss. His CD here showcases his unique style of singing, songwriting and guitar playing (some of which is breathtakingly good) that added a certain spice to many Kiss albums, with a generous helping of tracks from his marvellous 1978 solo album included.
br /
br /Sadly, neither Ace nor Peter were productive enough in the eighties to capitalise on their fame and early work in the band, and both have faded into obscurity, save for the odd Kiss reunion. Gene Simmons has often criticised them both for being lazy. Who knows...
br /
br /Gene's CD is a solid affair, though with a higher percentage of Kiss `standards' included in the mix (no bad thing), and Paul's disc is the most Kiss-like in style - he seems to have been the band's touchstone musically, certainly in those early years. High quality throughout, with numerous timeless gems.
br /
br /Each CD has only 14 tracks - which is why I only give it 4 stars; there's plenty room for additional songs that would have created a more complete package overall, and (as another reviewer has commented) there are a few baffling omissions.
br /
br /Having said that, I think Ikons is the most satisfying and comprehensive Kiss compilation out there, remaining true to the marketing ideals that appealed to their original fanbase of the 70's and early 80's, and representing the true essence of their various musical parts. And it reminds us that, once upon a time at least, they really were the Hottest Band in the World.
