Amazon.co.uk Review Most bands ripen and transcend their earlier selves, eventually. But for Razorlight the onset of maturity has been particularly rapid. Itrsquo;s like they got on the bus with their debut emUp All Night/em, all tight jeans and scrappy attitude, winging a childrsquo;s fare and yet by the time they sat down they were in comfy slacks, pulling a financial supplement from their jacket pocket for light reading and asking the kids at the back to pipe down. Their eponymous second record unapologetically disposed of the fervour and sense of place of emUp All Night/em, pursuing instead a universal sense of melody and more generic themes. It is this vein that they build on with Phase 3, aka emSlipaway Fires/em, and having already engaged the mainstream, Johnny Borrell now makes a big play to be prompted alongside some of the greats. With the sentimental piano balladry of ldquo;Wire to Wirerdquo; and ldquo; The Houserdquo; he positions himself between ldquo;Donrsquo;t Look Back in Angerrdquo; and Elton John. On ldquo; You the Restrdquo; and ldquo;60 Thompsonrdquo; he goes after Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan respectively. The eye-openers are exaggerated cliché ldquo;Tabloid Loverrdquo; which is like The Who, Queen and Roxette forced into a space too small for them all and ldquo;Stingerrdquo;, arching soft rock ballad with a perm. Itrsquo;s an ambitious project in advancing the Razorlight template and sometimes it probably pushes too far, but a glimmer remains throughout and emSlipway Fires/em wonrsquo;t be the record to halt their ascent. em--James Berry/em

Thier Time Is Due! May 24, 2009 Martin A Hogan (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This European rock quartet received high acclaim in the U.K. back in 2004 when their first album, "Up All Night" went triple platinum there. They have also supported "Queen" and the "Rolling Stones", such is their popularity overseas. Their music is a combination of piano-fueled love songs, "Wire To Wire" to folksy rock anthemic lamentations as in "Hostage In Love". Each song contains a story and rides high on a steady beat and a surety of the strong rising band.

br /There are hints of "Crowded House" and "Black Crowes", but the sound is distinctly "Razorlights" own. "Monster Boots" runs away with ferocious fervor as the relentless drummer pounds away and the vocals spin wildly. On the flip-side, "The House" is a sad ballad that sets Razorlight ahead of most bands afraid to show dynamic range. Another rocker that shifts pace surprises at every bridge and riff is "Tabloid Lover", a surefire concert satisfier. "Stinger" is bluesy and emotional with a steady beat that will have you nodding your head in accompaniment.

br /Not shy with lyrics (listen to "North London Trash") or style (just about every song is distinctly its own). Razorlight is one of the hottest bands yet to be fully appreciated in the States. The latest single as of this date is "Wire To Wire" and its only a matter of short time before Razorlight is a huge hit in the old USA.

Mystical rock comes of age October 23, 2008 Gary Stanyard (Diversity Grove) 14 out of 37 found this review helpful
I've been a huge Razorlight fan since hearing their soul-trapping album, "Up all night". The clash of eastern mysticism of a girl with a 'golden touch' and the Western urbanity of 'Dalston', I didn't understand at the time but with the release of 'Slipway Fires' I see the adolescent yearning of then has become the spiritual calling of now. 'Wire to Wire' is the group's opus. Lyrically, the songwriting reaches a new level of production, Borrell's aching harmony and the thunderous harmonics ask 'What is love but the strangest of feelings? A sin you swallow for the rest of your life?' taking us beyond the mundane viscosity of love to a deeper, unreachable meaning. Take off your shoes, walk barefoot as though in God's own garden; breathe in the rousing piano in which every note notably peaks - it is an epic awakening, seeming to tame the wilds of the Hebrides where it was recorded. Remove your shirt and beat your chest to the stirring retort of 'You and the rest' defining this album as perhaps the single greatest political standpoint since the 2006 re-release of U2's 'WAR'. As the album's uplifting coherence continues, lift your arms and allow each affirmation to raise you up until finally you find yourself hanging on 'The House' a beautiful way to finish. Razorlight's recent performance on 'Jonathan Ross' a BBC talk show, left me speechless. Truly here and now are band that are reshaping the boundaries of what art is and are the true pretenders to Coldplay's fading messianic crown.

maybe people need to re-listen. January 20, 2009 Sean Hownam Simply excellent aside from Tabloid Lover, not loving that one, from Stinger on are some of the best things Razorlight have written. For everyone craving Up All Night 2, it just isn't going to happen, they could probably write another Up All Night with their eyes closed but what would be the point in that? Razorlight are progressing nicely and this is yet another really good album.
Rocks. January 21, 2009 Pony Girl 2000 (U.K.) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This album is great. Agreed there are one or two dud tracks but there arent many albums that dont have a few dud ones (Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes exception maybe?).
