Amazon.co.uk Review
Featuring a flurry of musical moods from a variety of producers--everyone from The Outsyders and Lil to Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Lady Gaga--Britney's new album, emCircus/em is clearly a determined effort to haul herself back to the top of the pops after a particularly rocky year. Lead single ldquo;Womanizer", with its stuttering drumbeat, buzzing synths and hooky chorus, is reminiscent of the album's other sonic firework, the raunchy ldquo; If U Seek Amy". These fiery missives indicate that Britney is back on form--but many other songs come across as damp squibs in comparison. Her extensive use of Auto-Tune adds a robotic aspect to her voice, rendering certain songs less engaging than they could be (the 80s electro of ldquo;Leather Lace" and the title track are two examples). Opener ldquo;Mannequin", the ballad ldquo;Out from Under" and ldquo;Kill the Lights" (a song about the paparazzi) come close to previous form, but still lack the essential spark needed to make emCircus/em the album it could --and should--have been. em--Danny McKenna/em

5 out of 5 stars It took a while, but she is back!!!!!!!!   November 13, 2008

It didn't happen overnight, but Britney is back to the one woman pop machine she used to be. While 'Blackout' was a great album it got lost along the way during all the drama, but it's here, album number 6, and what an album it has turned out to be. The albums sound seems to be an equal mix of Blackout and the Britney of years ago. It's not quite as electronic as Blackout and brings back more of Britney's personality in to the album. This is the first album since 2001's 'Britney' that she has collaborated with Max Martin, also Danja is back producing along with Bloodshy Avant. New producers (The Outsyders The Underdogs)have been brought in too to make sure the album isn't too predictable. The only slight let down is (surprisingly) the Bloodshy Avant production. 'Unusual You' is just not up to their previous work together, its not bad just a bit bland next to the other tracks. br /This album is every bit as solid as Blackout was, whilst not every song is amazing, none are at all bad. Lead single 'Womanizer' is certainatly a great song, catchy, fast and not too deep, but that's just for starters. It is definately not the best song on the album. Next single lined up is Dr Luke produced 'Circus' which is 100 times better again than Womanizer. It moves at a slower pace but the beat is heavier the songs feel overall is darker. Pure brilliance!! Other great tracks include 'If You Seek Amy' which is a really catchy song (helped along by the play on words (",)). One thing that Blackout was missing was a genuinely emotional ballad and Circus serves up a great one 'Out From Under' which discusses finding your feet after the breakdown of a relationship. A really genuine song from Britney. 'Lace Leather' and Danja produced 'Kill The Lights' are yet more great tracks from the set. 'Kill The Lights' runs the same track as Piece of Me - an anti-paparazzi track which although not as catchy, is definately better written than 'Piece Of Me', 'Lace Leather' delves into something a little raunchier. Despite all these great tracks, there is one which stands head and shoulders above the rest, and that is 'Mannequin'. Produced by The Underdogs this song is fueled by a thumping bassline, swirls of synthesisers and so much energy the speakers nearly melt. Yurn this track up and feel the hairs on the back of yor neck stand on end!! A brilliant song brimming with energy. One of the best she has done. br /Overall, this a great great geat album, a total return to form for Britney taking her current sound forward whilst reincorporating the good bits of the old Britney back in again. With several bonus tracks about too such as 'Rock Me In' 'Phonography' 'Trouble' and 'Amnesia' (depending on what edition you get) there is plently of new Britney to enjoy. This is the last step in achieving the full comeback. Fantastic.

I absolutely loved Blackout and thought I wouldn't like this one as much, but I think I like it more. The only track I'm not overly keen on is My Baby but I think the rest are just brilliant. It's just got that something that makes you sing along every time and I amn't bored yet! br / br /It's not often that you find an album where you like all the songs and I would say even if you didn't like Britney's older stuff to try this one.

5 out of 5 stars Slick, catchy and fun   December 9, 2008

I have to disagree with the reviewer who prefers the early Britney: I find the first two albums very dated now, with the exception of about 5 tracks, and rarely listen to them. Like Madonna, Britney's music changes with the times and her own maturity (or possibly length of her Doctor's prescription). Unlike Madonna she's retained her dignity in her published albums and videos, and taken as a contunity from 'Blackout' this continues to build the Britney image as a polished young woman who can sing and dance and frequently doens't wear much clothing. OK, we all read the media and are aware of the bits the music doesn't advertise, but Blackout was largely good, if lacking in real standouts (other than Piece of Me and - my opinion only - the badly titled ooh ohh baby). This will appeal to likers of Blackout, but it has the catchy single material which In the Zone had. Nice to see a mixture of electro-pop (think Imogen Heap), bouncy airhead beats and Toxic-style stick in the head songs. Shame Radar was included again though. A good, solid and fun album.

Well since TWO people have reveiwed this album without HEARING it I thought I would too! br /One of them was strangely enough reveiwing Britneys mothering skills...ummm...ok.... br /The other gave this album one star because ''you can hardly call this a comeback"...its not Britney Spears or the albums fault that this is being hailed as her comeback...it's probably because she was too mentaly unwell to actually promote Blackout...if you were paying attention you would know that Blackout was just realesed and that was that, no tour no performances nothing. br /So please give Circus a chance I have heard two songs and one is great and one is amazing!

Now this is what i'm talkin about!!!! Ever since I'm A Slave 4 U, i have been waiting for Britney to create something as sensually seductive as Circus. Blackout was a great album, but Circus will do better! br / br /1) Womanizer- The female anthem of the year, catchy synth sounds and pounding dancey beats. Great first single br / br /2) Circus- The second single, and a great choice for the title track, mainly an RB killer, with minor traces of Electro-pop. br / br /3) Out From Under- A beautiful ballad originally performed by former Geffen artist Joanna Pacitti for the Bratz soundtrack. Very soulful tearjerker. br / br /4) Kill The Lights- The title basically screams sexy! It's pure Britney sass, it's basically Urban Pop fun. br / br /5) Shattered Glass- A little bit smoother than KTL, but still fun enough for the dance floor, an interesting song to have a bit of a piano drive to it particularly for fun Urban and Dance. br / br /6) If U Seek Amy- Britney's naughty side has returned, it has nothing to do with searching for a girl, say the title fast enough and you'll notice she spells something! hint hint, very similar to Freakshow and Hot As Ice from Blackout. br / br /7) Unusual You- A fun mix of 80's Disco and RB, a bit of a filler, but still good. br / br /8) Blur- A mid-tempo RB seducer. This could pass for single material. Sounds like something Ciara might do. br / br /9) Mmm Papi- A more immature version of Hot As Ice, fun vocals and catchy beats and very tongue-in-cheek. br / br /10) Mannequin- Very Synth Pop/RB, hypnotic vocals and heavy beats. br / br /11) Lace And Leather- Like KTL, the title screams sexy, very Electro Urban Pop, with a very small trace of trance and funk style guitar. br / br /12) My Baby- Now we go back to basics, MB is a reminiscent of Britney's previous ballads. Pure piano drive and beautiful vocals br / br /Bonus Track: br /13) Radar- this track is not really needed because it appeared on Blackout, it's Electro with a 90's dance feel. br / br /Deluxe Bonus Tracks: br /14) Rock Me In- Another Electro Urban sound, catchy and seductive sounds with sassy vocals br / br /15) Phonography- similar to Perfect Lover, smooth and catchy urban groove with synthesised vocals. br / br /Britney has finally found her comfort zone with Dance Pop, Electro Pop and RB/Urban. Well done Brit.
