5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Kenny Compilation Ever Issued In the U.K   January 16, 2006
R. S. Spencer
22 out of 23 found this review helpful

There have been many compilations of Kenny#x27;s music issued. Prior to this, the best one in the UK was 1985#x27;s "Kenny Rogers Story", which featured 20 tracks, this album doubles the ante and is available at an affordable price for any budget.pThere is also a CD called "42 Ultimate Hit#x27;s" available for a higher price (on import from the United States). That is slightly better, however, for listeners who just want to buy a bargain CD, this may be better as it is less expensive. If you unsure, look and compare the two collections.pThe first track on CD 1 is called "Lucille". This is the song that launched Kenny#x27;s solo career into the stratosphere. A country number about an unfaithful wife, it was a number 1 hit in many countries, including the UK. Prior to this success, Rogers had been a member of both The New Christie Minstrels and The First Edition in the 1960#x27;s. With the latter, he scored a number of hit#x27;s and two solo re-recordings of "Ruby, Don#x27;t Take Your Love To Town" (originally a UK Number 1 hit in 1969) and "Reuben James" are on this collection.pThroughout the #x27;70#x27;s, after the First Edition split up, Kenny made a name for himself with a string of country/pop classics. "She Believes In Me" was a major hit in the United States, as was "The Gambler" (possibly Rogers most popular song ever). Though neither reached the top 40 in the UK, they were popular among both country and pop fans and to this day are still played on the radio.pThe same could be said for 1981#x27;s "Through The Years" (a number produced by Lionel Richie), this romantic ballad is played at many weddings, anniversaries and even funerals. pSpeaking of Lionel Richie, he also wrote and produced "Lady" especially for Kenny, another major American hit, that topped the charts for several weeks and also reached the top 20 in the UK.pKenny has also had success with duets, and a good selection is included here. Sheena Easton, Kim Carnes and Dottie West all make guest appearances. Although the selection of duets is good, My favorite of Kenny and Dottie#x27;s duets is "Anyone who isn#x27;t me tonight", a very raunchy number, sadly missing on this CD, but this is only a minor complaint as it#x27;s impossible to fit all of Kenny#x27;s great songs from the #x27;70#x27;s and #x27;80#x27;s on just 2 CD#x27;s. (10 CD#x27;s MIGHT do the job!).p"Coward Of The County" was another world-wide Number 1 hit, about a pacifist who has to put up with being called a coward, until he is really put to the test. "Sweet Music Man" is a song Kenny Rogers as The First Edition were breaking up (and in part is autobiographical). "Love Or Something Like It" was written by Rogers and one of his backing musician, Steve Glassmeyer and is a fun bar song. Infact the "Love Or Something Like It" album is one of Kenny#x27;s best works, sadly this (or any other collection) never include any other tracks from it, but this CD does include generous selections from two of my other favorite Kenny albums, 1981#x27;s "Share Your Love" ("Through The Years", "Blaze Of Glory", "I Don#x27;t Need You" "Share Your Love With Me") and 1976#x27;s "Kenny Rogers" ("Lucille", "Green Green Grass Of Home", "Son Of Hickory Hollers Tramp", "I Wasn#x27;t Man Enough", "Lay Down Beside Me" "Puttin#x27; In A Little Bit Of Overtime At Home".pA later hit (mid 80#x27;s) was "Scarlet Fever", a song about a man who falls in love with a stripper. It#x27;s lyrics about lost love and recapturing memories make for a very fine song. pThose are just some of the fine songs on this 40 track greatest hit#x27;s package and any good record or CD collection should have at least one Kenny album. Compare this with "42 Ultimate Hit#x27;s" and decide what one suits you better. Either way, you#x27;ll want to listen to them again and again.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation of Kenny's music   August 27, 2005

This is not the definitive hits collection (if that's what you're looking for, compare this with 42 ultimate hits) but it contains most of Kenny's classic solo recordings recorded between 1976 and 1983 while also including a nice selection of solo covers and duets with Sheena Easton (We've got tonight), Kim Carnes (Don't fall in love with a dreamer) and seven duets with Dottie West. I originally discovered Dottie's music because of her duets with Kenny and soon discovered that her solo recordings are every bit as brilliant as these duets.pTaking the classic solo recordings first, the compilation opens withy Kenny's two UK number one country hits - Lucille and Coward of the county, both of which also made the top five in the American pop charts. Apart from Tennessee Ernie Ford (whose hits pre-dated the birth of rock'n'roll), Kenny is the only country singer (so far) to have two UK number one hits. Even Jim Reeves (the only country singer ever to be a consistent hit-maker in the UK) only managed one UK number one (Distant drums) and that was a posthumous hit.pKenny's biggest American hit (Lady) spent several weeks at number one there but stalled outside the UK top ten. Being written and produced by Lionel Richie, it deserved to do a lot better but perhaps it wasn't the type of record that the UK pop buyers of the day liked. Other notable American hits include Sweet music man, All my life, Love the world away, She believes in me, You decorated my life, Blaze of glory (which would sound ever better as the closing track), Love will turn you around, I don't need you, Scarlet fever, Share your love with me. Love or something like it and Through the years. Notable by their absence are Love lifted me, Daytime friends and The gambler, but all those songs are easy to find elsewhere - if you must have them, buy a different compilation. The collection also includes re-recordings of Ruby don't take your love to town (a UK number two hit in 1969) and Reuben James, both of which Kenny originally recorded as lead singer of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. The surprise here is that Something's burning is omitted - the original version was a UK top ten hit.pMy first Kenny Rogers album was his untitled 1977 album. It is also the most traditional country album that Kenny ever recorded. The compiler of this collection clearly enjoys that album as much as I do because it is generously represented here. Apart from Lucille (the big hit from the album), you'll also find Son of Hickory Holler's tramp (a cover of O C Smith's sixties hit), Green green grass of home (another sixties cover), Lay down beside me (a Don Williams song although Kenny recorded it first), Putting in overtime at home (a cover of a Charlie Rich country hit), Laura what's he got that I ain't got (a minor country hit for Kenny that rarely turns up on Kenny's compilations) and I wasn't man enough (possibly making its debut on a compilation). With that many songs selected, it's a pity that neither Mother country music (my favorite track from the album apart from Lucille) nor While I play the fiddle (another great song that rarely appears on compilations) were among them.pThe duets with Dottie are Every time two fools collide (a song that Dottie was planning to record solo until Kenny turned up at the recording session) and covers of All I ever need in you, We love each other, Together again, Let it be me, Just the way you are and You've lost that loving feeling. Notable by their absence are Anyone who isn't me tonight and Till I can make it on my own.pWhile there are some obvious omissions, there are plenty of less-frequently heard songs that are well worth hearing. Apart from those already mentioned, here you can find You were a good friend, Long arm of the law, While the feeling's good, Twentieth century fool and A love song.pAs an introduction to Kenny's music, this is brilliant but even if you've got some of his music already, you may decide to buy this for the songs you haven't got.

Kenny is my absolute favourite country artist. He and John Denver are my two heroes and this album was splendid in every way. If you're a newbie to Kenny's music you should pick this one out as it has all the classics. br / br /Recommended to both young and mature audiences, you won't be disappointed.

I love the way Kenny can tell a story in some of his songs, such as 'coward of the county' A heartbreaking song with a great story. Kenny also sings great love songs, one of my favourites being 'through the years' a real tear jerker. 'Lady' is romantic to the max, just showing his versatility. This is a brilliant two Cd collection containing all his hits.
