5 out of 5 stars Review the extras. We know it's a classic.   March 30, 2009

The albums a classic. There's nothing more I can add to what's already been said in heralding this album.....so i'll concentrate on the merits of this version of the re-release ie the MTV show, the Re-Mix and the new tracks. br / br /Starting with the Re-Mix. I love it. There had been a suggestion that you would hardly spot the difference but for me it's there in spades. I'm not saying it's better, and the original slightly muddier lower budget production, I suppose, was part of it's charm. However, on the re-mix you can now clearly pick out all the relevant instruments as clear as a bell....which is particularly good if you have ever tried learing some of the guitar parts which in the original mix sometimes dissappear in a wall of sound. br / br /One of the best parts of getting into a band is discovering them in the first place and then discovering more and more in an album listen after listen......and it's not often you get a chance to discover that classic moment all over again. br / br /As far as the MTV DVD is concerned the quality is excellent and it's great to have that memory of the band in the early days with the whole band looking a little shy but sounding so assured, completely unaware of the classic status they would achieve. The quality of the music and performance is excellent...better in fact than I remembered. br / br /Finally, the extra tracks. Bearing in mind that Lost Dogs trawled through most of their unreleased past and had seemed to prove they'd were not capable of releasing a dud, the extras do not really live up to those expectations. However, the first of these, Brother, is pretty good, as is Just a Girl, although I could have lived without the latter. br / br /State of Love and Trust and Breath and a Scream are just earlier versions of the two on the 'Singles' film soundtrack release, but give you a good feel for what they started out as......and makes you appreciate the fact they took time to improve them. br / br /Evil Little Goat is worth it for the smile it puts on your face. 2000 Miles Blues....doesn't do any harm. br / br /All in all this is one re-release that's really been worth the purchase. br / br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Still better than nevermind!   March 26, 2009

Whilst Nirvana's Nevermind may have been Grunge's diving moment and its death knell, Pearl Jam's - Ten has stood the test of time well due to its songs sung beautifully in a 3rd person view through the eyes of a jounalistic like reporter by eddie Vedder which reverberates nicely with the bass and guitars of Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard which brings the life out of songs such as "Even Flow" , "Once", "Alive" and the classic "Jeremy". br / br /If i was on a desert island i would make this my number one album to take with me as even on its own it plays like a greatest hits album. br / br /

5 out of 5 stars A classic improved   April 7, 2009

I fell in love with this album the very first time I heard it all those years ago. I'd heard "Once" on a CD given away with a magazine and thought the singer had the most incredible voice, and just had to hear more. The album itself didn't let me down, great song following great song, and from then on I was a fan of the band. br / br /For a while I was hesitant about buying this set. Would it be an improvement on the original? Inside the hard cover you find a kind of stiffened digipack case, and inside this there are three disks. Disappointingly there are no lavish sleevenotes (unlike R.E.M.'s superb "Murmur" deluxe edition), nor are there any lyrics, just page after page of photos of backstage passes, the band, and so on. In this respect the package is a let-down. br / br /The first disk is the original album, remastered, and to be honest it doesn't really sound any different at all. After a quick burst of "Porch" I returned it to the sleeve and was worried that I'd wasted £25. Thankfully, the second disk is stunning. Brendan O'Brien has taken "Ten" and remixed it, and although not radically different the album sounds incredible. No longer swamped by a slightly muddy production it now sounds clean, all of the instruments individually audible, and if you listen on headphones you can pick out every individual performance. Fans of the original will delight at the work O'Brien has done here, a classic album getting a new lease of life. Finally, the third disk is a DVD of their superb "MTV Unplugged" performance, and although it is presented slightly out of sequence (during one song Eddie has something written on his arm, but during the next track you see him actually writing it!) it is a great souvenir of those times. br / br /I do wish the book had been better if I'm honest, but with music this good does it really matter?

If i could have afforded the expensive version i would have purchased that! br / br /However, i am not disappointed one iota with the deluxe version of the classic debut Pearl Jam - Ten. This deluxe version contains the original cd remastered, a remix cd of ten with previously unreleased material and a dvd of the unplugged show they did which, incidentally is brilliant! br / br /Digressing somewhat it would be interesting if PJ were to do another unplugged with the best of taken right throughout their career and that would be a tough choice. br / br /Highly recommended release and i look forward to the re-issues of their entire back catalogue in due course!

Having seen clips of the DVD on youtube I couldn't wait for this to come out. You won't be dissapointed! State of love and trust along with Black are the highlights for me. The re-mix of ten is also good, but i don't think they needed to do much to the original. I would have paid the price for the dvd alone, with the CDs as a bonus.
