5 out of 5 stars Profoundly excellent (from a SoundGarden lover)   March 26, 2009

I knew nothing of the pedigree of this work apart from Cornell and I played it in my car this morning on my way to work. It's amazingly good. I have everything Chris has done including Temple of the Dog and this is GOOD. To claim that this is dressed up pop music is completely wrong because surprisingly the arrangements are subtle and witty. If this is dressed up pop then so is Bjork and Goldfrapp (circa Black Cherry) because this out does either. I didn't want to get out of my car when I arrived because I wanted to finish the album and that's almost unique for me. br /Listen with an open mind and then you'll get it. Full marks to Mr Cornell for having the style and guts to do this.

5 out of 5 stars Predictable backlash takes nothing away   April 5, 2009

I could write an opus, wax clever, contrast compare and cogitate ad infinitum, but it looks like I've been well beaten to it. And there are a lot of "I want my new Chris Cornell album to sound like the last one/everything he's ever done before" brigade. br / br /Fine, if that's what you want, don't waste your money. br / br /If, however, you fancy the thought of the best vocalist in the business trying something new then open your ears and your mind and get ready to have your perceptions shifted. br / br /I thought some of his last album was awkward and clunky ('No Such Thing' and 'My Poison Eye' are good examples, although I eventually grew used to them) and when I heard Timbaland was involved and guitars mostly weren't, I have to admit I shuddered. But ever since I got it, it's hardly been off and even when I'm not listening to it, I can hear chunks playing in my head. br / br /It comes down to this. Listen to it. Make your own mind up. If you don't like it, that's no problem, it's not like Cornell's rock canon is sparse. But if you do like it, I guarantee you'll be glad you gave it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, brave album!   February 22, 2009

This album is brilliant! br / br /I believe that the only way to listen to this record is to completely put aside any preconceptions of how you think a Chris Cornell album should sound and take it on it's own merrits. br / br /Anyone who has been a long time fan of Chris Cornell's work will know that you will always receive a sterling vocal performance and there is no change here. What you also get is an album of well written songs with fantastic production from Timbaland. br / br /A brave change of musical direction? Yes! Artistic faux pas, Mid-life crisis? Absolutely not! It may not be guitar based rock but surely as music fans we should appreciate that we have an artist here who is brave enough, and indeed capable of moving so effortlessly between genres and creating great music! br / br /Leave your preconceptions at the door, embrace the music and enjoy! br / br / br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Chris Cornell for the 21st century... fantastic!   March 14, 2009

I've always been a fan of Chris Cornell, Soundgarden and Audioslave and can't understand the fuss about the guy trying something different! br / br /This album has a modern, funky kick to it and it sounds wicked! It's the first album for a while that I haven't been able to stop listening to... br /

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!   February 24, 2009

This album took my by surprise. I dont normally like RB, but love Cornell. I've now listened to this album constantly for about a week and out of the 14 tracks, I'd say 8 are fantastic. They are: br /Part of Me, Scream, Time, Ground Zero, Never far away, Enemy, Other side of town (the highlight of the album IMO) and Climbing up the wall. The remaining tracks are good, but not great. Sometimes the production sounds a little too "boyband" on certain tracks, but overall I'd say this was his best songwiting since Euphora Morning.
