| Customer Reviews: Marmaduke Duke Juke Box Heaven May 24, 2009 The Wolf (uk) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Marmaduke Duke are almost quaint. Quaint but not cutesy.
br /Between them Mr Neil and Mr Reid possess a substantial and refined musical imagination.
br /They also have a sense of fun and in these dark days that can be no bad thing.
br /
br /The ten tracks which constitute 'Duke Pandemonium' may well provide part of the
br /soundtrack to the long hot summer which we would appear to have been promised.
br /
br /Things begin well with twitchy crickets in the long grass moments before the big
br /beats of 'Heartburn' kick in. The song doesn't settle down to a steady groove.
br /The rhythmic disruptions are unpredictably satisfying.
br /
br /'Everybody Dance' is a splendidly out of control speed-disco romp.
br /The falsetto vocal harmonies are an absolute hoot.
br /
br /Likewise 'Silhouettes' whose staccato guitar and manic beats must make a great live number.
br /
br /Shades of Mr Byrne and Mr Murphy (LCD SS) drift in an out here and elsewhere
br /but that is no bad thing.
br /These talented young gentlemen would appear to have found a more than
br /good enough voice of their own.
br /
br /'Music Show' demonstrates a somewhat darker sound palette.
br /The jangling guitar chords contrasting nicely with driving percussion.
br /
br /'Kid Gloves' is a very fine pop song. The pizzicato synth is perfectly judged.
br /
br /Coming in at something over seven minutes 'Demon' is probably the
br /most adventurous composition in the collection. The synthesis of stark
br /electronica, accoustic elements and hard beats coalesces eventually in
br /a strangely affecting long anthemic coda.
br /A new 'All You Need Is Love' for the twitter generation.
br /
br /'Erotic Robot' is very funny.
br /
br /'Je Suis Un Funky Homme' might make you get your flares in a twist
br /if you dared to try to dance to it !
br /
br /Mr Zappa would have been proud to have written 'Rubber Lover'.
br /Two minutes of sublimely perverse Scottish ecstacy.
br /
br /'Skin The Mofo' is full of sunshine. The quasi-caribbean rhythms and very
br /rude chorus provide an upbeat conclusion to this splendid little album.
br /
br /Another random purchase which I am more than happy to recommend very highly to you.
br /
br /Cracking Stuff !
Je Suis Un Funky Homme! June 3, 2009 James Mcwilliam Woods (Hampshire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
br /Duke Pandemonium certainly marks a change in style for these Ayrshire lads. Their music has taken a much more poppier direction on this, their second album. For those of you who liked The Magnificent Duke, there are tracks here that could've been picked straight off that album, whereas tracks like 'Rubber Lover' and 'Je Suis Un Funky Homme' are certainly more radio friendly.
br /
br /This is a good album, but certainly not a great album. Well worth buying if you like Biffy's lighter stuff or the Duke's debut.
A lucky buy June 15, 2009 LouisCbee (England) A very refreshing album, I only bought this album on a whim as I'm a Biffy Clyro fan and discovered that Simon Neil from Biffy is one half of Marmaduke Duke known as `The Atmosphere' and a friend of mine telling me that they are pretty cool whilst I was sat on Amazon on payday. Before rushing off to buy due to the biffy clyro connection note that it is very different from the style of biffy, Marmaduke Duke are very much alternative rock with electro pop rock highlights, although very experimental it is a very good listen and is in a prized place within my glove box for when I need uplifting whilst sat on the M25! Very much a summer album and it made a drive to Norfolk for a bank holiday weekend very enjoyable.
Not bad June 26, 2009 H. J. Threadingham (london) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not a bad album, kid gloves and rubber lover are great, the rest is quite different and a bit 'all over the shop'. Would recommend the singles and sticking to Biffy instead.
