5 out of 5 stars Anthems For The Common Man   July 13, 2009
The Wolf (uk)

Mr White has always been a writer of distinction. br /It's good to hear his very fine songs coming out br /of his own mouth rather than the mouths of others. br / br /What a splendid collection this is. Irrepressibly br /English even when his subject is California. br /Listen to the voice and diction on 'Weird Friendless Kid' br /for immediate ellucidation. A man not afraid to be br /himself for a moment. A complete joy in fact ! br / br /The tunes are all strong, organically light-handed; br /the lyrics observant, whistful and loaded with pathos. br / br /'My People' is an anthem for the lonely man; the acutely br /personal becomes universal in the epic chorus. A real gem. br / br /'Broken', too, is saturated with honest emotion. The string br /arrangement here, as elsewhere, is particularly beautiful. br /Music of grand gesture but never less than humanly grounded. br / br /The intimate insights of 'There's Going To Be Someone' are br /almost unbearable in their vivid depiction of real people br /struggling with real feelings . The polar opposite of Soap. br / br /'Time To Fall' looks failure in the face without fear. br / br /'If You Run' raises the prospect of more hopeful possibilities. br / br /'Pull Me Through', however, is nothing less br /than terrifying in its unremitting intensity. br / br /Loss. Hope. Despair. Love. Loss Again. br / br /A profoundly honest but ultimately uplifting album. br / br /Uncompromising and magnificent. br / br /Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Based on the first single "Broken"   May 5, 2009

This is EG White, amazingly remembered from last nights journey home listening to the radio. The first single "Broken" was played and I have waited all day to get hold of an advanced copy from my friend and cannot wait to hear the album. His voice is absolutely divine! I don't really know much about this guy but I intend to find out. (This is now an updateed review and I have!! - Wow, all the songs he's written for the like of James Morrisson, Will Young and Adele I love, no wonder I like his style. He's written some of the best pop songs ever recorded and this album promises to be great, especially if the single is anything to go bye. Wow, I can't wait for My 17th!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant. For those who miss Eg and Alice....   May 18, 2009

Great, great album! br / br /I have had Eg and Alice - 24 Years of Hunger ever since it came out. I remember taking a chance on it after reading the review in Q magazine! br / br /Then bought Rocket Man. Again-loved it, but not as much as Hunger. br / br /Now, downloaded this album this morning-on the third play already. It just hits you. The voice makes you swoon, the lyrics are rising and just take you off on a cloud. Even the songs which are melancholy, have a wonderful appeal to them. br / br /Currently My People is my favourite, but that may change with a few more plays. br / br /Buy this, then buy 24 Years of Hunger-no matter how much it costs. You won't regret it! br / br /Eg - can we not wait as long next time please. We need music like this! :-) br / br /24 Years of Hunger

5 out of 5 stars Superb pop album - buy it now!   May 26, 2009

Can melancholy be uplifting? It can in this man's hands! I love the way his voice breaks on My People, I love the asides in the lyrics, the way things veer off at the last minute, the swells and the strings, the return of Alice Temple and his voices merging, the English pronunciation, the party down Hendon Way (after he drove on back from Camden?). A tremendously melodic pop album that is also deeply personal and intimate and original. Hurrah! More, please! A bit quicker next time? :)

This album appeared on my Recommendations listing at Amazon so I listened to snippets from the mp3 purchase option and decided that it was for me. I absolutely love this album. Eg writes the most beautiful lyrics and his voice is perfect. Each song as I hear it becomes my favourite for those few minutes - although I have to say that My People, There's going to be Someone and Time to Fall are just superb! I hope that this will my first of many Eg albums.
