| Customer Reviews: Pretenders Gold Both New And Old ! June 2, 2009 Brien Comerford (Glenview, Illinois United States) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This a great 2 CD compilation that includes many of The Pretenders all time greatest hits and the exemplary and eclectic newer "Break Up The Concrete". There are five outstanding songs from "Break Up The Concrete" that merit inclusion as Pretenders' greatest hits. They are:
br /1) Love's A Mystery
br /2) The Last Ride
br /3) You Didn't Have To
br /4) One Thing Never Changed
br /5) The Nothing Maker
br /
br /All the above five songs feature Chrissie Hynde's tender, yearning and angelic vocals. The harder rocking "Boots of Chinese Plastic", "Break Up The Concrete" and " Rosalee" are also stellar tunes that make the latest CD so addictive and terrific. Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders have been consistently brilliant for three decades.

Rootsy country rock with a best of thrown in for good measure. July 3, 2009 Clarki1England (England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This double CD collection features the best of the Pretenders and a new studio album. Starting with disc one, you are given a delicious slice of the Pretenders back catalogue. This has been included to add extra selling power to the new album that comes with it and as the singles collection and greatest hits don't include all of these songs, it works well as an introduction to the Pretenders.
br /
br /The first singles collection came out in approx 1987 so there will be some new buyers by now - people that have heard these songs on the radio and have never bought an album by the group till now, will be pleasantly surprised if they purchase this collection.
br /
br /Some of the tracks on the original singles collection and Greatest Hits collection are missing and instead this is a collection of some of the band's finest moments. However, I would hasten to add that there are still many, many gems to be found on all of their albums. I have all of their CD's and they have never ever produced anything that is less than "Pure quality".
br /
br /Highlights of the "Best of" include the guitar driven and moving "Kid", "Talk of the town", "Back on the chain gang", "Stop your sobbing", "Day after day", the upbeat and delightful; "Don't get me wrong", "Brass in pocket" and "Cuban slide" along with the rocking "Message of love", "Precious" and "Middle of the road", together with the heartfelt ballads "2000 miles", "I'll stand by you", "I go to sleep" and "Thin line between love and hate".
br /
br /There is much to enjoy with this CD, however, what we could really do with is a companion to the singles collection volume 1 ie: a singles collection volume 2 featuring all of the singles from Packed, Last of the Independents ("977" and "Forever Young" are missing), Viva El Amor and Loose Screw plus all of the stand alone singles and soundtrack songs such as "Windows of the world", "If there was a man", "Goin' back" and the brilliant cover version of "Live and let die" to name a few.
br /
br /Turning to Break up the Concrete, Chrissie Hynde has put together a new band for this album with Martin Chambers still part of the live band. Their playing truly fits with the rock / country / roots feel of the album. The instrumentation is fantastic and very innovative with the drumming and guitar work adding a freshness, which revitalises the Pretenders sound. Chrissie appears to be having a great time on certain numbers whilst at others she is at her melancholy best.
br /
br /With the album "Loose Screw", Chrissie went for a reggae sound on a number of the tracks, however, there is nothing remotely reggae about these songs, which makes me think that Chrissie wants to try out a variety of different styles on her albums.
br /
br /Highlights are the fun "Boots of Chinese Plastic", "Don't cut your hair" (reminiscent of "Rebel Rock me") - it really grows on you. Rosalee also appears to be a take on "Valerie" by Amy Winehouse, which was a cover of a Zutons' song with a male singer, however, don't get me wrong, it's not a similar melody. It's been recorded live in a studio and growls along as Chrissie belts out the lyrics.
br /
br /The classic Pretenders' "Love's a mystery" and "Don't lose faith in me" remind me of some of the best songs on "Viva El Amor" and feel instantly familiar whereas the country tinged "The nothing maker", "The last ride" and "You didn't have to" offer something slightly different, however, if you a Pretender's fan, you should feel right at home with these.
br /
br /The tracks "Break up the concrete" and "Almost perfect" are wildly different to each other. "Break up the concrete" having it's nearest musical companion in "Thumbelina". "Almost perfect" is subdued and low key yet it works well and is catchy (don't ever change being the hook line) whilst "Break up the concrete" will drill it's way into your consciousness with it's uptempo chorus and jokey lyrics.
br /
br /Lastly, the album closes with "One thing never changed", a beautiful ballad, which draws you in and must be listened to loud to truly appreciate. You'll have a tear in your eye.
br /
br /All in all a triumph. Chrissie and the band are in fine form. Buy it now or live in regret.

Pretenders latest double album July 27, 2009 Mrs. C. Clarke (Derbyshire) The Best Of / Break Up The Concrete

br /Great to listen to all the old hits again.
br /A good buy!
Total Waste Of Money June 8, 2009 Mr. P. N. Cairns (Birmingham United Kingdom) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
How the once mighty have fallen,First the new cd "Break Up The Concrete" the only words that spring to mind to describe this are:boring, awful and insipid. What on earth has happened to the band since the excellent "loose scew" they seem to have run out of ideas, and the production is very flat and uninspired. As for the greatest hits WHY ? There are already greatest hits available from the band, and if you are a fan like me stick to the career overview "Pirate Radio",its much better value .
