This is an album that deserves to be listened to carefully from start to end. I think 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin' perhaps Amos's best album yet in a brilliantly quirky, diverse career. There is a relaxed looseness about some of the song structures because Amos is pushing boundaries: avoiding, by her own standards, predictable chord progressions, themes or arrangements. You will find these songs have lodged at the back of your mind when you least expected. br / br /Few songwriters working today can match Amos's creative integrity. She can craft music and words inside a beautiful, sensuous soundworld completely her own. This album does have stand out tracks: around eighteen of them. Radio-friendly songs such as 'Welcome to England' will have immediate appeal. I particularly liked 'Ophelia'. Amos pushes boundaries by re-working myths. So her Ophelia is, thankfully, no longer victim. br / br /These songs, like all the best songs, will grow on you with repeated listenings. While Amos does explore some dark themes, the overall mood is one of joyous celebration. br /

5 out of 5 stars Review of the special edition DVD   March 26, 2009

I've reviewed the CD of Abnormally Attracted To Sin on the page for the standard edition, so this review is dedicated solely to the special edition DVD. br / br /As a persistent buyer of special edition Tori albums, I have become used to getting very short DVDs that are great for the short running time but have always left me wanting more. No so with this one! When I heard it featured 16 'visualettes' I didn't begin to think that these could actually be full-length videos for each track. A change of record label has obviously brought a vast change in corporate generosity. Running to a total of 70 minutes, the videos feature Tori and her Doll Posse personas walking around and looking interesting and distant in a wide variety of settings. Unlike conventional music videos, they don't seek to sell the song or tell the story. Instead they act as more of a moving blank canvas for the listener to exercise their own imaginations. If you're not a Tori Amos fan, that probably doesn't sound worth the bother, but if you are a long time fan the DVD is - for the first time actually with a Tori Album - an integral part of the overall album experience. br / br /I'll describe each one in turn for those who might be interested: br / br /(1, That Guy) Tori people-watching in a red light district, contrasted with Clyde reminiscing in a run down house. br / br /(2, Welcome to England) Tori, sometimes in a USA flag dress, sightseeing in London whilst watched by Isobel from the London eye. br / br /(3, Strong Black Vine) Tarot cards and burning oilfields, television news coverage and Tori washing oil from herself in the shower. br / br /(4, Ophelia) Clyde visits a graveyard, mourning for something of which she's not sure. She catches the attention of a masked Tori, dressed as the spirit of Death, and begins to feel herself resolved. br / br /(5, Fast Horse) Isobel performs a smoke ritual as Clyde and Tori explore Cornwall) br / br /(6, Fire to Your Plain) Isobel watches as Pip flies a plane and Santa drives to the airfield. br / br /(7, Curtain Call) It's a rainy night in Chinatown. Pip walks through the late night shopping district sheltered by her umbrella, has a lonely a drink at the bar and returns home. br / br /(8, Not Dying Today) Tori on the Tour bus and at concert. br / br /(9, Maybe California) Tori explores two sides of Californian scenery - the walk of fame (in two unusual dresses) and the beach (in a fetching black dress). br / br /(10, Give) Santa alone in a bar full of people as she reminisces about her time in concert. br / br /(11, Police Me) Clyde contemplating radar dishes as Pip confronts a security camera that follows her in a shop. br / br /(12, Starling) Pigeons scatter as Clyde takes in some scenic windmills, goes down to the beach and takes a trip in a rowing boat. br / br /(13, 500 Miles) Santa goes for a walk, whilst Tori dances with marionettes and Isobel visits a botanical garden. br / br /(14, Flavor) Tori in a boat exploring the wetlands. br / br /(15, Lady in Blue) Santa pays a visit to London Bridge and then enjoys herself at a fairground. br / br /(16, Abnormally Attracted To Sin) Tori walking reflectively in and around a church.

Great packaging(the CD Tori). I bought the deluxe edition and in all honesty I don't think the bonus DVD will get too many plays. For some reason I have a problem with the DVD. If I play it using Power DVD the picture is perfect, the soundtrack playing in the background on the Titles Menu is perfect, but unfortunately there is a lot of distortion on the soundtracks that accompany the videos. I eventually got it to play perfectly using the Windows Media Player. The videos have the appearance of amateur holiday videos but if they are as recent as the date quoted Tori could make a fortune selling her secret of eternal youth. br /Is the music as good as recent offerings from Tori? br /I loved her last album, American Doll Posse, and I expected a lot less this time. Proved wrong again, this is a really strong album. Given time to get to know it I think I'll rate it as one of her best. Musically it's a solid and confident record. Sat waiting for a duff track but non came along which when taking into consideration it's an 18 track CD well into her career that in itself is an achievement. It's a shame that the Media in the UK has such a short interest span in singers, usually 3 years, because this really is a great album from a consistantly great artist.

My Favourite Tori Albums are Little Earthquakes, Choiregirl Hotel, To Venus and Back Scarlets Walk and now this is added to them. I never bothered with the Beekeeper, Pele and I found Posse unappealing and hard to get into. br / br /This is probably the best, as it's the most consistent all the way through and the most listenable. The madness/quirkiness is played down a bit which suits me and it allows the album to flow from start to finish. br / br /I loved the DVD I think it works really well as an alternative way to listen to the tracks. Tori doesn't distract from the songs but sort of displays a moving picture to go with the music. Her eccentricity isn't uncomfortable to watch and she gets away with what could be seen as self indulgent nonesense. br / br /If you like more melody and gentle swaying beautiful tracks that you want to play over and over again then buy this. br / br / br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Proud of Tori, like always . .   June 6, 2009

Having read a couple of reviews by the establishment before I received my copy of the album, I was worried, I admit. "Are Tori's best years behind her?, I thought. "Oh sure, she has her massive loyal fan base, but commercially, are people going to hate the album in general for being inaccessible and rather well, messy?" I was worried, because I want everyone to see in her what I do. Even though you can never say Tori has ever worried about conforming to comercial ideals. br / br /Personally, I feel I need not have worried, sonically speaking I feel the album holds together very tightly, the songs belong together - I had been worried from what other professional reveiwers had said that the album would be a long sprawling hotchpotch of mis-matched, mis-placed material - I certainly do not feel that this is the case at all. br / br /I also love the direction she has taken on this album, there are more classic tori moments then the establishment would have us believe, at the same time, it smoulders, is dark,is beautifully vintage and classy, and in the ligher tunes she just kinda rocks. There is nothing over serious about her, again, as some folk would have us believe. br / br /I'm sorry but you can't tell me this lady doesn't know what she is about. br /I'm telling you this album will grow on you each time. br / br /Anyway, when someone can play and sing like she does, you earn the right to do whatever the hell you like. It's all good with me, keep doing your thing Tori. The music industry needs folk like you out there.
