5 out of 5 stars Brilliant slice of pop history. From the early years of Duran Duran.   August 7, 2009

Duran Duran are still evolving in 2009, but go back to 1982 and they were the newest pop sensation. In the previous year they had released their first album featuring Planet Earth and Girls On Film, then in 1982 they released the best album of their career, Rio. This concert captures them at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon in London on the 'Rio' tour. br / br /The band, then aged 19 - 23 were just getting used to the limelight in the UK, their big break in America was yet to happen, so we see five guys performing their hearts out, playing songs that they'd written in the preceding 2 or 3 years. br / br /What makes this concert brilliant, and the Rio album brilliant, is the strength of the songs that were not singles. You won't fail to be blown away by the excellent The Chauffeur and New Religion, and when you add them to the strong tracks of the first album Nightboat and Friends Of Mine, as well as all the singles, you get a fantastic 16 track concert DVD. br / br /If you like Duran Duran, or are interested in the music of the early 80's, this DVD is essential. It captures the best band of the year performing a brilliant show. The set is a 16 track concert DVD with two BBC 'Top of The Pops' performances (Rio and Hungry), and a 10 free track audio CD of the concert. In fact, it's a bit of a bargain! br / br /DVD Tracklist: br /1. Rio, 2. Hungry Like The Wolf, 3. Night Boat, 4. New Religion, 5. Save A Prayer, 6. Planet Earth, 7. Friends Of Mine, 8. Careless Memories, 9. Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me), 10. Girls On Film, 11. My Own Way, 12. Hungry Like The Wolf, 13. Save A Prayer, 14. Lonely In Your Nightmare, 15. Rio, 16. The Chauffeur, 17. Hungry Like The Wolf (BBC TV's "'Top Of The Pops"' 13/5/82), 18. Rio (BBC TV's "'Top Of The Pops"' 18/11/82). br / br /CD Tracklist: br /1. Rio 2. Hungry Like The Wolf 3. Night Boat 4. New Religion 5. Save A Prayer 6. Planet Earth 7. Friends Of Mine 8. Careless Memories 9. Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) 10. Girls On Film. br /

5 out of 5 stars About time!   August 10, 2009

If this is the live concert I think it is, then I'm a happy girl! I had this on video after taping it off the TV back in 1984, subsequently lent it to someone a few years later and thought I'd lost it forever. I must have watched it 100+ times and it is fabulous. br / br /All the hits from the first two albums and not a dud amongst them. Plus a cover of Cockney Rebel's 'Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)' which later appeared as a b-side to 'The Reflex'. br / br /Having seen the band play at the Forum a few years back, they are a sensational live act. This early footage shows a band on the verge of big things. There are more than a few bands out there now who could pick up a thing or two from what these boys were like live 27 years ago. br / br /Bring on September!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Duran Duran   September 24, 2009

It was with eager anticipation that I received my copy of Duran Duran Live at Hammersmith Odeon this week. Duran are superb throughout the whole performance and the film captures the raw dynamism of the band as extremely talented song writers and musicians. This is especially impressive when you consider the average age of the band members at the time was 21. br / br /This tour was before the Seven and the Ragged Tiger album when synthesisers took over and arguably dominated their reportoir. The sumptuous layering of slick guitars, syncopated bass, novel synths and powerful drums is clearly evident surmounted with great vocals by Simon Le Bon. This is a fantastic DVD worthy of any collection. The bonus live CD makes the whole package very good value. What are you waiting for! Buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars Duran on the verge - fantastic stuff   October 5, 2009

I took delivery of this DVD last week and I've been watching it every day since. The live performance in this show has echoes of the later 'Arena' tour in 1984 but here we have the boys in a more edgy and 'party' mood. Absent are the subsequent 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' songs but in their place we have the moody 'Friends of Mine' and a slow-burning 'Come up and see me' - both fantastic. Listening to the live CD is a revelation - Andy Taylor's voice backs up the big Le Bon choruses - on 'New Religion' we get a full measure of this and it works! Nick Rhodes is also in a playful mood throughout, throwing in some very melodic synth effects on most tracks which are not there in later live performances. The guitar work from both JT and AT is simply awesome. Here are two of the best new wave musicians in the world giving full vent to their craft - expect the unexpected on every track. The songs are top quality, the sound is tightening up and the energy on stage is almost brimming to explosive level - this is the moment that 5 young British men are on the verge of becoming the biggest pop band in the world. The quality of Duran Duran as both recording artists and live performers is captured perfectly on this release. It's a winner.

5 out of 5 stars What fabulous memories....   October 30, 2009
Stephen B. Winfield (London, England)
I remember going to see these concerts in their day and having seats at the back of the stalls, the music was almost drowned out by the sound of all the screaming girls, but I along with a few other young men enjoyed them as much as the girls did. The image had got me a first, having the chance to wear make up and frilly shirts but the music endured. And here it is in all its glory... I was hoping to see Steve Harley, from Cockney Rebel, join Simon on stage for Come Up See Me (Make Me Smile) as he had done the night I was there, but hey, its still a brilliant concert and brought back many memories for me. My old video version wore out many years ago so it was great to enjoy it again... Duran Duran have always been my favourite band and still are, they always come up with something new, fresh and exciting long may they reign...
