5 out of 5 stars THE BOSS DOING WHAT HE DOES SO WELL !   June 24, 2009

Bruce Springsteen is the foremost rock singer in the world today, all these years on he still proves the point with every album, with every tour he just keeps getting better. This set maybe a cash in on this tour, but I'll tell you what it's a very good one indeed.I've been a fan for most of his career so far, have pretty well all of his albums, and sure there are songs I personally would have liked to have had on here but,as a collection it's great to have so much of his best known classics in one set,and put together so well. The E street Band are one of the best and most creative br /bands around both live and in the studio. The original Greatest Hits was I don't think of Bruce's making and many of the tracks then seemed to have been messed around with. This was certainly improved with the excellent Essential 2 and 3 CD set. This new one though is well worth getting and as many new fans will catch him at Hyde Park and Glastonbury why not release some thing this good with so many good songs on to get new fans into his music. The bonus live tracks are great to have.Yes this is a set new and already fans surely will treasure.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Bruce ... really!   June 9, 2009

A new Springsteen Greatest Hits (the last Hits came out in '95) is an event. br /The first thing to say about this selection is that it showcases the E-Street Band as much as it does Bruce himself. That's to say, none of the acoustic material that Bruce produced after his split with the band in 1985 is on this CD. Instead, it's a straight down the line selection of rock, from his earliest LP 'Greetings from Asbury Park' in 1972 to 2007's 'Magic'. br /And what a selection! All these tracks are highlights. My personal faves are 'Rosalita' (which always brings the house down in concert), 'Thunder Road' (arguably one of the greatest rock songs of all time), 'The River' (melancholy Bruce at his best), and 'I'm on Fire' ('Sometimes its like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull / And cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull'). The recent material is also of the highest quality. br /Having said that, every Bruce fan will find something to improve on. From his first LP, 'Blinded by the Light' (made famous by Manfred Mann's cover version) wouldn't have appeared in my selection: 'For You' is a tighter and more dramatic track, and its lyrics are slightly less silly. The studio version of 'Rosalita' featured here is excellent, but the live version from the recently issued Hammersmith Odeon 1975 CD is fantastic. From 'Born to Run' we get 'Thunder Road' and the title track, which are both essential; but this is Bruce's finest hour, so a third track (e.g. 'Jungleland') would have been in order. 'Badlands' is unquestionably right, but instead of the title track of 1978's 'Darkness ...', I'd have had the tear-jerking 'Racing in the Streets'. 'Born in the USA' understandably gets four tracks. I'd have dropped the title track (which, for all that its heart's in the right place, now grates musically, I'm sad to say) and 'Glory Days'; my preferred pick would have been 'Downbound Train', which contains some of Bruce's tightest lyrics ('She just said, "Joe, I gotta go, / We had it once: we ain't got it any more"'). From 2007's 'Magic', we get 'Radio Nowhere', which is, if you'll forgive me, a piece of fairly stolid rock chug; altogether more brilliant (and in my view one of his very best) is 'Gypsy Biker', a tremendously affecting lament for a friend who comes back from Iraq in a body bag. As for the two live tracks that end the CD, 'Fire' and 'Because the Night' (the latter originally written by Bruce and generously given to Patti Smith), these are in very good versions from the 'Live / 1975-85' two-CD set: if you've heard some of Bruce's live bootlegs (e.g. Winterland 1978), you'll know even better versions than these. br /OK, enough carping: this is a wonderful set. All the selections have good arguments in their favour. There's nothing strange or obscure or boring here. All in all, it's a great gift for a friend who doesn't know Bruce.

4 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity   June 9, 2009

I have been a Springsteen fan since the 70's and have just about every official album he's released. And whilst there are undeniable classics within this collection (Thunder Road, Born to Run, Hungry Heart, Rosalita etc.), there are equally as many classics missing (Jungleland, Racing In The Streets, Streets of Philadelphia, Ties That Bind, Bobby Jean etc.). The 4 stars given reflect the quality of those classics included which have stood the test of time and rank amongst rocks best. As for the rest... And where are the tracks from the 'Tunnel Of Love' album or the 'Seeger Sessions'? What a missed opportunity. A 2 CD set with greater breadth and depth would have been better. If you want to buy just one Springsteen album, make it 'The Essential Bruce Springsteen', or even the original 'Greatest Hits' album, both are stronger album than this compilation.
