5 out of 5 stars A much more "deeper" collection of classic blur tracks   May 31, 2009

At last! EMI have decided to release a much more comprehensive blur collection. moulded in the same way as the 1999 beastie boys anthology this two disc collection looks deeper into blurs rich back catalogue. a few of the singles have been missed off only to make space for lesser known gems, "to the end","sunday sunday" and "end of a century" are not here. but in their place are excellent tracks like "bugman", "he thought of cars" and "death of a party". br / br /also blurs early years are looked at. this is the only place you`ll be able to get the hard to get 1992 single "popscene". good choices were made by including "badhead","battery in your leg" and "bluejeans". Modern life is Rubbish was almost totally ignored with the 2000 Best of. br / br /There are no b-sides here which is a slight shame but there are enough from 1995 onwards to make an excellent second b-side album to complement the '94 japanese Special collectors Edition" album, maybe EMI are listening. br / br /There isn`t too much from the Leisure era but i guess room has to be made for later releases. You`ll only be missing "Theres no other way" really. its also a shame there isn`t say two new tracks to promote it better. also its a bit light on "the great escape" era too. "country house" was a big single at the time but it wasn`t a good single so it worth missing. i would have included "best days" or "yuko and Hiro". br / br /So overall its a solid collection for someone who hasn`t got all the albums. All of blurs LP`s are looked at properly this time round so you couldn`t have asked for much more.

5 out of 5 stars You can't please everyone   June 6, 2009

You certainly cannot argue with the quality of this compilation. These are some of the greatest songs of the nineties and Blur must surely now be remembered as the most consistent British act of that decade (note that Oasis' "best of" relied almost entirely on songs released in their first two years on Creation). It is also great to see some of my favourite album tracks and less known singles get their place in the limelight - This is a Low, Badhead, Trimm Trabb, Blue Jean, Chemical World and (finally making an appearance on an album) Popscene. br / br /However there are some unbelievable ommissions - End of a Century, Tracy Jacks, and To The End were always far more indicative of the enduring nature of the Parklife album than the two big hits. Young and Lovely (the b side of Chemical World) really should have been a single in its own right. br / br /And of course - On Your Own - just the other day I was thinking what a great set opener this would be for the forthcoming reunion dates - but clearly the band think otherwise. br / br /But it is testiment to their greatness that even though these songs have been ommitted this is still one of the best "best ofs" ever!

5 out of 5 stars Great but get all the albums!   June 3, 2009

Great compilation of blur's best but if you really are new to these guys I'd strongly suggest starting on their first album, Leisure, and climb up the musical tree all the way to Think Tank. That way you'll really appreciate how the boys evolved over the years and you won't miss out on killer tracks like Oily Water, Jets, the list goes on and on. The same is true for any seminal band. br / br /This 2nd 'best of' is great for a quick fix however and perfect for flinging in the car stereo for summer cruising. br / br /Can't wait to see them next month!

5 out of 5 stars Blur: Suitable For Beginners!   May 25, 2009

It's difficult to argue against a track listing which has been chosen by the band and there's no question that this is a terrific compilation which would be a fantastic introduction to the band if you hadn't got any other albums by them. "Parklife", "Beetlebum", "This Is A Low", "Song 2", "Tender" - all superb songs and all present and correct here. However, there are a few fairly shocking omissions. Leaving out their smash number one hit "Country House", for example, is a crime. I know that some of the band have disowned the track and have expressed their distaste at the Blur vs. Oasis phoney Britpop war that was hyped in the media at the time, but it remains a fantastic single and an excellent example of Blur at their commercial best. Other notable tracks which surely deserved a place on this double CD are "Tracey Jacks", "Best Days", "To The End" and "End Of A Century". Personally speaking, I'd rather listen to those tracks than much less enjoyable album cuts such as "Trimm Trabb" and "Bugman" any day. br / br /Still, this was the band's choice and is a collection of songs which feature Blur at their most creative and leftfield and, what's more, because of the notable omissions, if anyone listens to this album and wants to investigate Blur's work further, they then have some wonderful songs to look forward to by exploring their back catalogue. On the whole, I think this is an excellent compilation and there are some real gems here which the casual Blur fan only familiar with their singles may have missed, such as "Death Of A Party", "Badhead" and "Strange News From Another Star". It's also good to know exactly what the band consider to be their best work and the material they're most proud of. This double album certainly is a fantastic reminder of why they were such an important and popular band during the 1990's and, even better, there is the promise of more undeniably brilliant material if you want to go beyond this compilation. br / br /Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars For Popscene Alone   June 16, 2009

That there have been so many conflicting choices of songs that people are upset at missing from the track listing gives an indication of how strong the back catalogue of Blur is. Personally I'm glad MOR, Country House and On Your Own are ommitted in favour of Trimm Trabb, Battery In Your Leg and Bugman. br / br /In particular, one of the singles compilation had (and indeed DIY compilation - home taping is killing music though) is how to follow Song 2. Live Popscene has always been effective, seguing seamlessly through in Punk thrash style (see the Live at Peel Acres as a prime example) but here the follow on of Bugman works supremely well. Noisier, messier and all together weirder (the Space is the Place outro just nudges I got my head shaved by a jumbo jet for non-sequitor lyrical approaches) it is a brilliant choice. br / br /Glad also to see Death of a Party on there and of course Popscene at last released in a fully formatted way - it is brilliant and one of those moments that could have been from any point in their career being so related to Song 2, Crazy Beat etc. For that alone its 5 stars.
