Beatles Remastered....but should they have been Remixed? September 15, 2009 Mr. F. J. Coop (Woodbridge, Suffolk United Kingdom) 175 out of 179 found this review helpful
I've had the Beatles Stereo Box set for nearly a week now, and have listened to all the albums a number of times through and feel compelled to post my feedback to help anyone unsure about taking the £169.99 financial 'plunge'....
br /
br /In fairness, I have to admit to being a dedicated Beatles fan (for the past 40 years) - so I'm not going to give an unbiased view on the music collected together here in one place...it's a true treasure trove.
br /
br /However, I do back up the point a number of other reviewers have put forward that, whisper it, some of these remasters don't actually sound that good - they're better than the 1987 releases, without a shadow of a doubt - but let's face it, it would be difficult for them not to sound better after 22 years of CD development!
br /
br /Now don't misunderstand me, several albums in this Box Set sound substantially better compared to the late 1980's digital releases:
br /
br /ABBEY ROAD is now a very satisfying, detailed and dynamic listen - this is especially apparent when you hear the musical 'duel' of guitars and drums that make up the album closer 'The End' - in truth, every track on this remaster is far better than the muddy mix on the 1987 CD.
br /
br /THE BEATLES (White Album) now delivers a fine stereo image with real 'studio depth' and lots of power to vocals, Lead guitars and Bass guitar - beating the 1987 2CD set quite easily.
br /
br /SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND is now far more balanced as a stereo listen, especially satisfying on Headphones - all the instruments and vocals now sound believable and crisp, with Paul's melodic Bass playing really jumping forward - it makes the 1987 CD version redundant.
br /
br /RUBBER SOUL and REVOLVER have a number of highlights - as does the PAST MASTERS set.....but the earlier albums, from PLEASE PLEASE ME to HELP! and the final LET IT BE disc are (at times) not really in the same sonic ball-park.
br /
br /Now, how could I possibly be so critical of the sound on this Box Set? - Well, I've no doubts that the Abbey Road team have done their best - but they have simply squeezed the maximum they can out of 40 to 47 year old Album Master Tapes.
br /
br /In comparison, over the past 5 years or so we have been treated to the remastered back catalogue of a growing number of equally prominant Artists such as The Doors (on DMC), Elvis Presley (on FTD) and The Rolling Stones (on ABKO) who, after initial 'slap-dash' releases in the 1980's and 1990's have all finally done justice to their heritage by making every effort to trawl tape vaults and sound archives to find, wherever possible, the First Generation Session Multi-tracks to Remix fresh Album Masters - anyone owning any number of these CD's will bear witness to the fact that as a consequence of all this extra effort, they sound truly 'STUNNING' - sounding like they were recorded yesterday....
br /
br /In fact this technique isn't anything new to the Beatles' Technical Team either, the very same work was done on the 'Yellow Submarine - Songtrack' Album as well as the 'Let it Be - Naked' release - which is why they both sound superior to their respective 2009 remasters.
br /
br /As such, I feel an opportunity has been lost to make this release a truly definitive one, especially when the Technical Lead for the Remaster Project at Abbey Road (Allan Rouse) has been quoted as saying (in the latest October 2009 issue of The Record Collector Magazine) that the Remastering process for all the Albums only took around 3 months - not the 4 years that is so often quoted in many reviews...it seems there was plenty of time to provide Remixed Album Masters from the Original 2, 4 and 8 track Session Multi-tracks....but this fantastic opportunity wasn't taken - perhaps it was stopped by the surviving members of the Group - but it's a real shame it didn't happen.....
br /
br /So, is it worth buying this Stereo Box Set? Well, yes it is.....each CD album is held within its own glossy digipack which includes informative liner notes in a booklet stored within...the outer box (with its outer slip-case and magnetic securing clasp) has been beautifully designed and manufactured - as a result, the whole package gives the owner plenty of user appeal...
br /
br /Is this the best The Beatles' Albums have sounded on CD? Well, at the moment yes.....but if they'd been Remixed from the Original Session Multi-tracks they would have sounded even better!
Stereo Box Set Review September 9, 2009 R. Brown (England) 52 out of 56 found this review helpful
I have received my Beatles stereo box set today with eager anticipation of hearing The Beatles in the best quality today's technology can give us. I have to say that although I have heard these albums many times before the crisp, clear and almost new freshness to the records is beyond my expectation. I am very pleased to say the least. I don't have over the top expensive music equipment or the need to break each recorded layer of a song down to the finest detail, I just want to sit back and listen to one of the world's finest band in superb clarity....this box set does this!! Great packaging, great pictures, documentaries and information on each album...Fantastic. This is the best Beatles collection to date in my opinion.
Finally the CD's we have been waiting for August 3, 2009 Mr. R. G. Prizeman (croydon UK) 94 out of 104 found this review helpful
I had the pleasure of hearing a few tracks from the white album and it sent shivers down my spine and made the hair on my arms stand up. The sound was more than I could ever have expected. I know we have all bought these Cd's before about 20 years ago but unlike the Stones, Bowie and Genesis, the Beatles have waited till we would notice a real difference in the sound. I know the stereo mixes were secondary to the mono mixes until Sgt Pepper, but the stereo mixes are 100% better than the 1987 versions. Don't worry all the ep tracks singles are on the past masters as a double CD. I am sure if you only buy your favorite album you may return and but another. As for re mixing in 5.1 no no this is how the music was ment to be heard correct and clear.
The benchmark by which all popular music is measured. October 21, 2009 Guy Incognito 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
It's all here. If you ever do stumble across some poor soul who's spent their life living under a rock, or locked in a cellar, and they don't know what pop music is, just hand them this and all their questions will be answered. Apart from the questions that spring from their answers. Then you point them in the direction of what happened before, during and after The Beatles. But whatever happens, the music contained in these discs have soundtracked the past four decades, and will continue to do so probably for a long time yet. And whatever music is made that can be considered in that nebulous concept of 'popular music', it'll all be measured against what's on the discs in this set.
br /
br /So what makes this edition more desireable than the previous 'bread-bin' box set from the late 80s which offers the same content? The answer is in the glorious sound quality that's offered. Everything has been painstakingly remastered by a bunch of top-flight engineers who obviously know what they're doing (much like the Beatles' original production/ engineering boffins like George Martin and Geoff Emerick) and offers a far more revealing sonic portrait than the original CD issues; the bass is far more pronounced, the drums are clearer, everything sounds far more lifelike and energetic, as if a dirty window has been given a through scrub. It sparkles to the point where even the most mundane tunes sound far better than they did before. The early material may suffer from the fad-ish stereo separation of having the instruments in one channel and the voices in the other which mars them slightly, but beyond that it's a sheer joy.
br /
br /If there are any niggles, they're tiny ones and only personal things - I'd have preferred to have both the mono and stereo mixes* on the same disc like the 'Capitol Albums' series did. I'd have also preferred Magical Mystery Tour to have remained in EP format rather than LP (which was a US-only release) and those extra tracks from the LP added to the Past Masters CD. And I'd have definitely enjoyed Yellow Submarine more if it was released as the mooted (but ultimately cancelled) EP with Across The Universe added and the George Martin orchestra tracks removed. But then again, if that's all I can find to pick holes with, it's still an entirely worthy purchase.
br /
br /It's not a fluke, or clever marketing, or brainwashing. At worst it's nostalgia (even for those who were born years after the final note of these recordings - I Me Mine, recorded in January 1970 without John Lennon), but the main reason for buying this is that it's all so damn good. The Beatles' catalogue of recordings is one of the most (over)analysed in popular culture, and I'm not going to insult your intelligence by summarising it all here. If you are interested, I'd point you towards Ian MacDonald's magnificent tome Revolution In The Head, which goes through everything song-by-song and is far more easier to digest than Mark Lewisohn's slightly dry day-by-day diary. But the point remains - whatever you know or don't know about The Beatles, owning this box set will improve your life. Simple as that. And who doesn't want that?
br /
br /*Incidentally, the stereo vs. mono debate that seems to have arisen among the self-appointed 'experts' (read: armchair pundits) is irrelevant - the songs are the important bit, end of story. Furthermore, the dismissal of stereo recordings by the mono purists is a spectacular insult to the work of George Martin and his team who assembled the stereo mixes because The Beatles were too busy doing fun things like playing gigs, writing songs and being crazy loveable moptops to do the mixes themselves (not to mention that the stereo mixes were, like, George Martin's job, you know?). And until we get the multi-tracks released to play around with ourselves (far fetched in theory, but certainly possible given the acceleration of home-listening technology), it's as close as we're going to get to what The Beatles heard or wanted to hear when they made those magical records.
It's worth it and every home should have one! September 1, 2009 Dan (England) 67 out of 84 found this review helpful
No need to justify the price, I can tell you it's worth it.
br /
br /If there was a way people could see this up close before buying, anyone could appreciate or forget the price tag.
br /
br /This is the most beautifully put together body of work I've seen. It's made to last, just as the music does and wasn't thrown together at the expense of fans.
br /
br /Care, attention and love have gone in to the contents. The packaging is ridiculously well done. The booklets are thick and completely informative (the silence at the end of `A day in the life' isn't silent to your dog...) with added historical notes, facts, dates and glorious photos and artwork.
br /
br /There are no horrible plastic cases - it's all of the high quality (there's even a magnetic strip on the box to keep everything secure)
br /
br /That's without mentioning the music. All seven years of incredibly re-mastered shining walls off unbreakable sound. It sounds brilliant and credit where credit is due to the people who brought us this.
br /
br /It does the music and history of the Beatles more than justice.
br /
br /A timeless collection that every house should have.
