5 out of 5 stars Third album is Carried off in style   November 3, 2009
Alex Danger (London)

Carrie Underwood's manager, Simon Fuller, has said of the American Idol winner's third album that "it's stronger in depth and there's more variety" - and he's exactly right. "Play On" is the album that I had hoped Carrie's previous album, 2007's Carnival Ride, would be; and - in my opinion - it's her best album to date. br / br /Where, on her two previous releases, there has been a tendency for Carrie to always be hitting the top of her range, track after track, here we find some welcome balance, and a nice mix of styles and tempi - as exemplified by the album's first two singles - the storming "Cowboy Casanova", and the heartfelt "Mama's Song". There's a hint of more mainstream pop/rock on piano-led tracks such as "Change" and "Unapologize", a wonderful synthesis of country and pop on the infectious, Max Martin produced "Quitter", and some welcome, more traditional country sounds on "Someday When I Stop Loving You" and "Look At Me", which - with Vince Gill on backing vocals - is happily reminiscent of Faith Hill's 1998 hit "Let Me Let Go." br / br /Almost everything on this album sounds like a potential chart-topper, and - after a few listens - there's still nothing I'm wanting to skip. I should probably mention Carrie's vocal performance, but - perhaps unsurprisingly - her singing is flawless. It's a given that Carrie fans will be buying this, but if you're thinking of investing in an album of hers for the first time, you could do no better than this. "Play On" is an album that's going to live up to its name for a long time to come. br /

5 out of 5 stars Latest Release from ACM Entertainer Of The Year   October 24, 2009

This pre-order review is based on my having heard three full songs, demo versions of two other songs, and sample clips of the other album tracks. br / br /Carrie Underwood is the reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year, and the first female performer to win this title since the Dixie Chicks in 2000. She "paid her dues" by honing her skills in the traditional manner for Country performers, issuing three self-release albums and touring widely as a teenager at regional events, before breaking through to national prominence by winning the television talent show "American Idol". Since signing to a major label, this is her third album release. She has so far seen little promotion in the UK - but this seems set to change with this album, her first to get an advance release in this country. br / br /New listeners should not expect to stereotype Carrie as a particular category of singer - this is a truly varied album in which she explores a range of styles, tempos, and subject themes. People who relate to a fine, expressive singing voice and an emotional commitment to the lyrics should sample this work, without focusing too strongly on genre labels. br / br /"Cowboy Casanova" is a powerful Pop-Country anthem, warning girls of a shallow lover, delivered with a punchy beat, in a contemporary style that I call "progressive honky-tonk". "Mama's Song" sees the singer in sweeter, more reflective mood, telling her mother she has found the perfect lover, while "Temporary Home" is a moving, inspirational ballad, dealing with three episodes of an orphan boy, a single mother in a hostel, and a dying man - all of whom see their present situations as only temporary. br / br /"Someday When I Stop Loving You" seems set to be the most Roots sounding track Carrie has chosen yet - an excellent song, and a real highlight. "Look At Me" is a Mainstream neo-traditional love song - also recorded recently by Alan Jackson on a movie soundtrack. br / br /Carrie co-wrote over half these songs - and an interesting feature of this album is that she has collaborated with a very wide range of writers - both old and new, and from both the Pop and Country spheres, often inviting unexpected and unusual combinations. The result seems set to be an album which can't be simply slotted into any one category, but which aims to offer something to a wide range of musical tastes. br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Third Times A Charm!   November 15, 2009
CountryGal (Ireland)
Play On is the follow up to the highly successful Carnival Ride and one of the main things this new album showcases is that Carrie has grown. br /Unlike her previous 2 albums,Carrie has learned that she doesn't always have to belt out a song for it to still be powerful.Plus she has definitely gotten more confident in her song writing.Co-writing 7 of the 13 tracks. All these songs have great depth and meaning that will easily touch people. br /Her no.1 hit Cowboy Casanova kicks things off, some other catchy uptempos include Quitter,Undo It and the irresistible Songs Like This. br /There also includes some beautiful ballads such as Mama's Song,Change and the simply beautiful Look At Me which has Vince Gill providing the lovely backing vocals to.This has a similar style to her version to Randy's song I Told You So.But the standout song on the album has to be Temporary Home,if this song doesn't touch your heart then nothing will. br /She wraps things up with a Martina McBride style anthem Play On.This album is surely a turning point for Carrie that will no doubt gain her a broader audience, while still keeping her fans happy. br /A Pop/Country album that is a pleasure to listen to,so you can't go wrong with this gem.Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Another great effort from Carrie but not as good as Carnival Ride   November 16, 2009

This is another great effort from Carrie. A variety of styles which is good however I only hope that with this being given a UK pre release that this does not ruin Carrie, her style of music what we love about her like what we have seen with other female country artists when they've hit the UK like LeAnn Rimes Faith Hill, even Taylor Swift to a lesser extent. What I mean is making her style more mainstream to attract the UK listeners who generally don't get country to the extent of those in America therefore taking away a big part of what makes her at her best as an artist. I hope it doesn't but after seeing what has been done to her in the Cowboy Casanova video I am starting to worry.........
