5 out of 5 stars Stellar second album and special edition worth getting   September 21, 2009

You couldn't class Bat For Lashes as being pop music, but Natasha Khan writes some incredibly catchy songs. You could use the words haunting and ethereal, but what really makes her music appealing is the poetical imagery she uses, the contrast between stripped down sounds and musical experimentation, and her ability to simultaneously convey vulnerability and strength in her voice. br / br /You could almost call Two Suns a concept album, as most of the tracks mention celestial bodies in the lyrics (suns, moons and planets), and a few of them reference other songs on the album either directly (Siren Song and Pearl's Dream) or more subtly. br / br /The closest track to being a pop song is the brilliantly emotive Daniel, but there are several others that really deserve to be listened to. Glass, Sleep Alone and Pearl's Dream envelop you in their exuberance; Moon and Moon, Good Love and Two Planets draw you in with their intimacy; and Siren Song has a fantastic split personality that washes between introvert and extrovert. Only one track doesn't fit in, and that's The Big Sleep, which feels like it's wandered in from a Kate Bush album with no idea of what's going on around it. That track aside, the album is next to perfect. br / br /I think Two Suns is one of those unique albums that everyone interested in original British music should listen to, and your musical 2009 isn't complete until you've done so. br / br /The special edition has a good number of extra tracks and an interesting documentary, but by far the standout of the extras here is a superbly atmospheric version of The Cure's A Forest. The imagination and atmosphere in her interpretation is so inspired that I dare any Cure fan to dislike it.

5 out of 5 stars Natasha is getting more excellent   September 21, 2009

Ive had TS since it the day it came out, BFL unheard-on faith-and was impressed, but some of it passed by me; br /BUT being a tad cynical, I thought-ANOTHER Special Edition already? br /But BFL have acquitted themselves on this nicely br /Not only does it SEEM to sound better-(and I could be wrong-that the music was tweaked-I cannot seem to get the AIFF file creation dates to compare) br /but the addition of eight songs (some live) AND a near 50 min DVD of Natasha and the bands thoughts and travels- all in nice 16:9 widescreen and 5.1 sound br /make this well worth getting-with a handsome case adding to it; br /There is a monster version of the Cure's A FOREST followed by an epic USE SOMEBODY br /My intuition is that this music biz/publicity mill path is not one she would rather be on-but it comes with the territory br /I hope she doesnt go astray-as this is what makes her and her music so endearing; But i think Natasha is very self aware br /It can be seen she is getting more confident and proficient and dynamic with her stage playing br / br /As a surprise guest, we also meet Pearl, live and in person-the evil younger sister of Pip...... br /I could really see and hear up close what was going on in the recording-what she was thinking, and I came to appreciate the songs that didnt really touch br /me previously; DANIEL seems to be....well represented on this set-a song that at first I cared little for; br /I will admit that I love the sheer poetic drama and polyrhythms of GLASS and TWO PLANETS-(which is so epic in feel and ends MUCH too quickly) br /A shame that the perfect, mesmerizing version of GLASS live from Manchester Odeon(?) in Nov 2008 was also not used in the footage (wheres your baby(?) br /I was lucky enough to see BFL in a small venue here of just 200 odd people in May-I will apologize here to the band for the unbelievable rudeness of a small group at the (our) front left of the stage br /blabbing and hooting football cheers and screaming, talking on their cells, until 3-4 of us near them, having had enough, yelled at them in unison to SHUT TF UP.... ! br /They were insulted! Note to self-leave this burg soon br /Sadly I missed her August show here due to illness

5 out of 5 stars But, Really?! No Music Videos???   October 5, 2009

Well, the record's been out for a few months now so I don't know if I need to say anything about the music. Yes it's more produced and a tad more commercial than "Fur Gold". I don't think that is a cynical ploy on the part of Ms. Khan though. Probably just a reflection on what she was getting in to at the time. The album is a 5 star effort to begin with (in my opinion) and the bonus tracks just make it all the more wonderful.Being a huge fan of Tom Waits, I really enjoy her take on "Lonely" from "Closing Time". Her version of "A Forest" is one of the many high points of the very wonderful Cure tribute CD "Perfect As Cats" The live tracks sound great and are wonderfully recorded.I really wish the Analog Suicide mix of Daniel(by the uber-talented Tara Busch who's fantastic version of "Let's Go To Bed" makes the afforementioned Cure tribute one of last year's "must-have" releases)had been included though. br /That brings me to my other complaint.Since I suspect many of us are buying this a second time to get the extra tracks and the DVD, I don't see why the "Daniel" "Pearl's Dream" music videos couldn't have been included as extras. But since the listing told exactly what was on the DVD,I couldn't really bring myself to deduct a star for that. br / br /Pilfershire Lane

If you haven't discovered Bat 4 Lashes yet, you're in for a real treat. br / br /This band creates an amazing and unique sound that is just fantasitc. Sort of a modern take on 'The Cure' but very unique in its own right. br / br /If you have the original Two Suns album you won't be dissappointed with this Special Edition with some excellent extra tracks including remixes of their hit single 'Daniel'. br / br /Highly recommended. br / br /Tom (Dublin) br /
