Duran Duran's iThe Singles/i arrives with perfect timing. With the impulse to treat 1980s pop with nostalgic irony finally dying, and cutting edge American bands such as the Rapture and the Faint directly sourcing from Brit synth-pop, this lavish box set suddenly sounds like a key dance-rock primer. Unlike the other major players in the early 1980s British Invasion of America, Brummie boys Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor and Nick Rhodes were not afraid to rock. And it was the early singles where they rocked hardest, as this glossy black box of the first 13 singles, lovingly recreated for CD, irrevocably proves. The first eight--from the turbo-powered disco of "Planet Earth" to the synthetic Beatles-ims of "Is There Something I Should Know?"--work on the tension between the band's megapop ambitions and the rudimentary playing, creating an eerie, erotic desperation. The full compliment of B-sides--particularly a hysterical, uber-youth club stab at David Bowie's "Fame"--charm with their gung-ho ridiculousness. By the final "A View to a Kill" they were doing slick, Americanised Bond themes, but this set is so evocative of strange pop times that you'll end up with the promos for "Rio" and "The Wild Boys" on a permanent mind-loop. Ah... Duran Duran... Floppy fringes, eyeliner, lippy and some of the best pop music of the 80's. I'm one of the screamers. I've loved them since 1981 and ordered the box set about 2 months before it's release date. But just because we screamed, didn't mean we were tone deaf. Almost a quarter of a century later, the original line up is back together and on the verge of what I hope will be a massive comeback. You can slag the "pretty boys on a boat" image, but songs like "Rio", "Girls on Film" and "The Reflex" have stood the test of time! "Girls on Film" is currently being covered by Girls Aloud. In 22 years time will we be praising a box set of their singles? Doubtful!pIt's not the fact that it makes up a comprehensive Greatest Hits package - There's Decade and Greatest for that - but that you get b-sides that so far were only on vinyl. Things like that matter to fangirls like me! pIt's wonderfully designed. Miniature replicas of the 7" and 12" picture sleeves and AVTAK comes in a gatefold which is just so cool! pIf you're a fan, you'll love this to add to your collection of CD singles. If you just have a casual liking for Duran, go treat yourself to "Greatest" and maybe you'll come back for more.

Now that the classic Duran Duran line-up has reunited for a new album and tour, it would seem quite apt that this box set should be released.pThe first thirteen singles by Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor serve as a potent reminder of their excellent musicianship and innovation way back when. These classic singles are absolutely fantastic (10 of them were top ten hits!). Hey kids, these songs were written and performed by the group themselves!!!!!! Even some of the B-Sides could have been released as singles.pThe first single, 'Planet Earth' is top rate new romantic disco with a fast and frenzied bass line and atmospheric synths whilst the band do a new romantic rock out with 'Careless Memories'.pThe singles from the classic 'Rio' album are all here including the single remix of 'My Own Way' complete with searing violins - this band were never afraid to experiment with their sound. pThe Beatlesque 'Is There Something Something I Should Know' is pure pop excellence and 'The Reflex' and 'Wild Boys' remind you that this group were at the top of the pop tree during the 80's.pThe final single by the classic line up, the James Bond theme tune 'A View To A Kill' must surely rate as one of their best ever singles, mixing the unique James Bond sound with a mature Duran Duran style.pA pity two of the Taylors left in '85 - even though Duran Duran continued to rock on, they could've been even bigger than they were in the early eighties........pThis classic UK band have been overlooked and underated for far too long - heres looking forward to the new album and, who knows, a complete anthology too.

With the 5 original members reunited for an upcoming tour and CD this box set has given die hard fans something to nibble on! The box set contains 13 CDs of DD's most popular singles and each CD features the cover art from the single when it was released. This is the first time many b-sides have been reproduced on CD. It was great being able to listen to "Khanada", "Fame", "Secret Oktober", etc. after many years! Let's face it! Duran Duran was far ahead of their time leaving this box set to be one of the most impressive releases of 2003. If music released today was this brilliant the world would be a better place!
Remix of A View To a Kill at Last September 14, 2003

Overjoyed with this set, at long last a remix of A View to A Kill as well as all their other classic singles. Love Secret October, that is played to death. When A View to a Kill was released back in 1985, there was no 12 inche I've waited 18 years for this, overjoyed. Now lads lets have a dvd concert please.

This box set represents the complete singles history of Duran Duran. pThe interesting feature is not so much the A-sides (does anyone else remember when 7" singles on vinyl cam with A and B sides) but the inclusion of B sides and importantly remixes.pI used to find the old 7" vinyl great fun, especially discovering B side songs that were usually not included on official albums, and finding little gems. For example, Secret Oktober, Tiger Tiger and Faith In This Colour.pDuran Duran has too long been underrated. There appears to be a swing back occurring in recent years, in which their pop-sensibilities are starting to be recognized as a good thing, and not subject to contempt and even derision. Does anyone else remember the NME of the 1980s ridiculing anything remotely related to commercial pop? Now a days NME regularly interview Duran members and appears to have shifted 180 degrees in its attitude.pThis box set is probably more oriented to collectors, as the Greatest Hits CD and the earlier Decade CD contain the more popular singles.pHopefully soon, the period from Notorious to the present day will attract the same box set representation.
