It's pop, but not as we know it October 21, 2009 sellitlikeitis 27 out of 36 found this review helpful
When I heard the 30 second song snippets on the album sampler I thought, hmm these all sound repetitive and kind of boring. Having heard the whole thing now, I can safely say I was very very wrong.
br /
br /Revered and popularised to the point of over-saturation thanks to the X Factor, the backlash against Cheryl Cole has begun in earnest as before anyone had even heard a note of this album the accusations of "she can't sing" and "auto-tuned to oblivion" flooded the internet.
br /
br /First off, this is not really an RnB album as had been hyped. I mean, there's definitely some RnB flavour going on, but it's mixed in with dancey-pop and is no worse off for it.
br /
br /The auto-tune argument is a bit pointless, given how prevalent it is nowadays- see Madonna, Kanye West, Britney, and Lady GaGa. Cheryl Cole is never going to be a big-note diva a la Leona Lewis, Beyonce etc. But to criticise her for this would be missing the point. She definitely sounds like a human being throughout though, no overdone Cher-style robot vocals to be found.
br /
br /As an album, 3 Words is about beats, grooves and catchy tunes. And there's loads of them (9 great ones out of 11) in an album that packs a nice punch at 44 minutes and never outstays its welcome.
br /
br /Highlights for me are the eerily sparse title track, which kicks in with a nice bit of bass, Heaven, with all it's bells, and 50s style opener, and first single Fight For This Love.
br /
br /But the whole thing is so damn catchy it's actually hard to pick a favourite. I suspect it will change the more I listen to it. Happy Hour is a quirky sassy tune with a chorus that, somewhat ironically, sounds like it could have come off a Lily Allen record. And while there's no out-and-out ballad on offer, Don't Talk About This Love is probably the mellowest of all the tracks, exuding the kind of chilled out lushness reminiscent of Gwen Stefani's "Cool".
br /
br /The only song I'm not keen on is Boy Like You, which sounds like they took a bunch of different mixes and spliced them together, not bothering to actually finish the job.
br /
br /And given that Cheryl is practically a backing vocalist on Heartbreaker, it seems a slightly inauspicious way to end her debut. True, Will.I.am helped pen a lot of the album, but it's a bit over-generous to give him essentially his own track on the thing.
br /
br /Anyway, to sum up, half of these tunes are suited to getting ready for your night out, the other half you could be hearing in the club. And it gets better with every listen.

3 Words - "Slick, energetic, love it ! October 22, 2009 Sandy180 (Tyne Wear) 15 out of 22 found this review helpful
Having just received my copy of 3 words today it has only had 1 play, but on first impression I was pleasantly surprised. You can't judge the songs on the 30 second samplers on this site, this is what I did after ordering and I nearly had second thoughts about it, so glad I didn't cancel. There are obvious stand out tracks such as the current single along with Rain on me, Make me cry, Stand up and Don't talk about this love. Cheryl Cole has writing credits on 4 tracks which was also a surprise. I think this album needs a few plays to grow on you, but it is so far from the Girls Aloud material that you can't compare them, this fact will attract new fans which is obviously a good thing for Mrs Cole ! My opinion is that she has been under-estimated, this is a fine effort for the start of her solo career. I don't know why there are people commenting on this review page with negative comments, when it is plain to see they have not actually listened to it. This is essentially an upbeat album with only 1 ballad, but it works and surely thats all that matters.
Made for radio November 3, 2009 Mrs. P. J. Mortimer (Surrey, England) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Adorning the cover of this album with the words Cheryl Cole is both a blessing and a curse for the singer.
br /
br /Some will buy simply because of the name attached to these RB-lite tunes - some will vilify the tracks because of it.
br /
br /But imagine you didn't know who this was from - easily done as Cheryl's pitch is lower to that on her Girls Aloud offerings and the sassy British pop has been replaced by something distinctly more American in flavour.
br /
br /As far as I'm concerned, if any one of these tracks came on the radio I'd be singing along in seconds or reaching to turn up the volume. And you can singalong in seconds, literally, as the choruses are all easily repetitive, but in a catchy memorable way as opposed to an annoying oh-god-here-we-go-again way.
br /
br /Best tracks for me are Taoi Cruz's Stand Up and Will.I.am's 3 Words. Both very different from each other, but want to get you dancing all the same.
Cheryl Cole, nation's sweetheart. 3 Words, actual pop perfection! October 19, 2009 L. Green (London, UK) 11 out of 22 found this review helpful
Cheryl Cole, a woman that needs no introduction, star of chart-toppers Girls Aloud and judge on the X Factor, from humble beginnings in Newcastle, she has become one of the most famous women in Britain. And now, what we've all been waiting for, her debut solo album.
br /
br /The album kicks of with the title track, 3 Words itself, and as Cheryl's reverb heavy vocal echoes out hauntingly over an infectious guitar hook that forms the core of the track, we realise we are in for something quite different entirely with this album than anything we've previously heard from Cheryl. A duet with Will.I.Am, their cooing exchanges of `I love you-oooo' are impossible to resist.
br /
br /For all the world sounding like a blend of New Order and Radiohead, this dancefloor smash is stunning, and surprising in how `un-pop' it is in a way. There's a moment where the beat drops away and the vocal echoes away into nothingness before everything kicks back in, simply amazing. In Cheryl's promotional radio tour for this album her excitement for this track was clear for all to see and hearing it now, its easy to see why.
br /
br /With tracks like Parachute, one could argue that Cheryl has `gone American' in her sound. One of the critics eternal praises for Girls Aloud was their distinct `Britishness'. And yes, to a degree, the RB vibe of this album does represent a more international flavour, but we can hardly fault Cheryl for striking out and broadening her musical horizons. A key element of 3 Words is how it is so far from Girls Aloud, and this freshness makes it exciting, new, an adventure.
br /
br /At the heart though, we still have Cheryl, the girl from Newcastle we all fell in love with 7 years ago and she sings every track with such conviction she holds us rapt with every song. The sound of 3 Words is the sound of the music Cheryl loves, the album feels organic, from the heart and to hear Cheryl alone, without the girls, we realise how talented she actually is as a vocalist.
br /
br /The likes of Heaven and Happy Hour (a track originally written for Rihanna) sound deliciously retro with its rap section, handclaps and waves of synths. They have a kind of early 90s roughness to them while at the same time sounding crisp and modern - again, a step away from the futuristic sounds of Girls Aloud's Xenomania productions. Lead single Fight For This Love taps into the same vein, tinkling piano and strings accompanying a soulful vocal from Cheryl on a chorus so catchy its no wonder the track shot straight to number 1 on iTunes.
br /
br /Rain On Me is an album highlight, bringing to mind some of Madonna's early 90s material, a funky bassline driving throughout the track. The chorus is divine and Cheryl delivers some impressive adlibs, especially in the last minute of the track as a `let it rain, let it rain, let it rain' refrain accompanies the fade-out. Fantastic stuff. As is next track Make Me Cry. Fans of Dannii Minogue might notice the similarities between this and Dannii's brilliant Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling, it's got that same essence of hot summer nights, another funky bassline backing up a sexy vocal from Chezza.
br /
br /Stand Up is the obvious 3rd single. With it's anthemic chorus, Cheryl calling for all to `Get up!', it is quite simply irresistible. A product of smash hit-maker Taio Cruz, his stamp is all over the track, pulsating synth heavy basslines throbbing under a relentless beat. This one's made for the clubs, literal dance-pop perfection. Its position so late in the album's running order is refreshing too, ensuring the quality of the LP never lags. There's nothing more annoying than an album throwing down all its aces in the first half, and thankfully, there's no sign of this on 3 Words. And as the final kick drum echoes out, you are left breathless and the sheer quality of the track. Many congratulations in order for Chezza and Taio for this one.
br /
br /Now, its interesting to see that from a Girls Aloud point of view, we hadn't had a big proper ballad from them since the likes of See The Day and No Regrets on their 2005 album, almost half a decade away. So to hear the beautiful Don't Talk About This Love on the tail end of Cheryl's solo album it comes as almost a surprise to see her tackle something more downbeat. And the results are beautiful. Cheryl's vocals are incredible, soft, innocent and brimming with emotion - soundtrack this to some sentimental video and I assure you, there won't be a dry eye in the house.
br /
br /Boy Like You is another personal favourite of mine from the album. Incorporating a sample from Fleetwood Mac, the track blends a sticky synth bassline with haunting 80s synths. Will.I.AM spits out an impressive rap break, lyrics like `I can bring you pleasure, I can make you squirt' making no disillusions as to what the track's about. It's down and dirty and Cheryl pulls it off perfectly.
br /
br /The album finishes off with Will.I.Am collab Heartbreaker, rather fitting in a way, to bring us back to where `solo Cheryl' all began. Hearing the song in the context of the entire album, it is reinvigorated with new energy, slipping in effortlessly amongst the sound of 3 Words as a whole. It also adds a touchstone of familiarity to an album which in many ways breaks out so far from what we are used to from Cheryl.
br /
br /From pop princess to RB queen, Cheryl has surprised, delighted and enthralled. 3 Words as a whole is a resounding success. It's classy, rich, mature and packed full of infectious, modern, irresistible tracks. With Cheryl's status as national treasure well and truly cemented in the hearts of the British public, we can only sit back and marvel at all she has come to achieve, and with the quality of 3 Words, all that is surely to come from her. Cheryl, we salute you (Fight For This Love style)!
fantastic album considerably exceeding my expectations October 29, 2009 dencall 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
