Amazon.co.uk Review
Bon Jovirsquo;s eleventh album has in some ways, as its title suggests, come full circle. There are reminders scattered throughout of the undiluted, heads-down rocking of their pre-"Living On A Prayer" days. In other ways it is exactly what it says it is on the tin; i.e. there are no efforts to reinvent the wheel here. Theyrsquo;re an older band than they once were, so there are noticeable limits to their respective ranges, but there's some gutsy fretwork from an on-form Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovirsquo;s hoarse, varnished croak does what it has to do, and both will undoubtedly please fans. There are plenty of crunching, air-punching moments and choreographed anthems, but pleasingly they don't feel nearly as forced as much of their post-2000 output. This free and easy approach has worked wonders, making Bon Jovi seem like less of a formula-entrenched machine and more open to the odd light touch and nuance. To leave you in no doubt of their heritage, "When We Were Beautiful" employs Don McLeanrsquo;s "American Pie" ‘sha-la-larsquo;s under a slick, high-budget rock sheen, but "Superman Tonight" is so warm and universal it could pass for Snow Patrol or Coldplay under the right stadium lights. Credibility may not be something they especially crave, but still, "Work For The Working Man" sounds patently ridiculous coming from the mouth of a millionaire. The balance is redressed a little by "Fast Cars" and also by the fact that the song is pure emSlippery When Wet/em. A surprisingly deft proving of form. --emJames Berry/em

5 out of 5 stars BON JOVI ARE BACK   October 28, 2009

Right guys and gals. This is the album we have been waiting for from the boys. br / br /Forget Lost Highway and all that rubbish. It is clear that all that was filler while they spent those 14 years since These Days writing this masterpiece. br / br /Also, forget the single, We Weren't Born To Follow. It's a decent song but in the end it's another It's My Life clone and certainly do not use it as an indicator of the sheer quality of the work on this record. br / br /I've heard the leak (knowing full well that I will be buying on release day) and songs like When We Were Beautiful, Work For The Working Man, Superman Tonight, Bullet, and Love's The Only Rule will be instant classics. The rest of the tracks are also brilliant work and far better than the album tracks on the other albums released this decade. br / br /I will highlight these songs however because When We Were Beautiful is the perfect Keep The Faith-style growing meaningful anthem; Work For The Working Man is the Slippery When Wet-style raunchy rocker for the modern day. Bullet completely took me by surprise- Richie is absolutely on fire in this song with his guitar work (and makes similar contributions throughout the album), it's grungy and the talkbox is on full display, you want to be shouting this song out with 30,000 others in a stadium. br / br /Superman Tonight is the best, absolute best Bon Jovi ballad in a long time. And I'm talking POWER on this one, absolutely brilliant. br / br /Love's The Only Rule is my surprise favourite song so far (hard as it is to choose a favourite). I will not spoil this one for you, but when I got to track 9 and this is what I found I remembered what I really love about this band. br / br /On previous 2000s records Bon Jovi have shown they can still write good songs, in 2009 Bon Jovi show they can still write an absolutely kicking album that you will never want to stop listening to. br / br /The superb songwriting is matched by excellent production. You can distinctly hear the contribution of each band member and the drums and bass in particular are very powerful and contribute to the mix being pretty much the perfect marriage of the Bon Jovi style with 2000s production. br / br /I cannot wait to see the band tour this album (I won't be paying the O2 ticket prices though!). Seriously buy this and get Bon Jovi back to number 1 in the UK, this album more than deserves it.

5 out of 5 stars Best album since "these days"   November 2, 2009

This is the best Bon Jovi Record since These Days, not conforming to poptrends this is an epic sounding rock album that is like a timemachine taking you back to the eighties, or to a parrallel universe where grunge never happened. br /The brainless party songs are gone, this record overflows with meaning and message: get off your knees and learn to love. br / br /The lyrics are very relevant, mirroring today's social and economic situations. The album also has an almost spiritual undertone, focussing on the NOW, the importance of living from love, and the knowing that love is the greatest power we have (if we choose between revenge and forgiveness). br / br /Check it out, it grows on you.

5 out of 5 stars The best BON JOVI is back !!. And this time it's true.   October 30, 2009

WOw !!. I agree with CompactDestruction that this is the best Bon Jovi album since the (very different) "These Days" (however I consider "Crush" a minor exception). But I'm dissappointing in some of your comments, that I guess they can confuse some people: I see no resemblance between "Keep the Faith" and "When we were beautiful", nor between "It's my life" and "We weren't born to follow" (notice: this is one of my favourite songs in the disc, thought there are a lot of other great songs). Those pairs are totally different songs. Also, "Work for a woking man" does not sound in any way like a "Slippery when wet" track. For me, it sounds more like the Boss (Bruce S.). And all those commented tracks are among my favourite tracks in "The Circle": The first 4 songs, plus "Thorn in my side" and "Learn to love". Yes, "Superman tonight" is astonishing. I cannot explain to fans what this song is. You have to listen to it. But it is not a ballad, sorry. Perhaps I can feel a 'Power Station era' feeling in it, but in a very modern and powerful way ... Well not, it is very different from everything ... it's ... a masterpiece !! br / br / In general, I see that the style of the "The Circle" music is totally different from whatever the band have done in the past. But it is BON JOVI, and it is good, and you will like it very much. It opens up new musical ways to Bon Jovi. That is very conforting and what is expedted from a Great Historical band. Yes, the production is very good (surprisingly nowadays, even with a Bon Jovi album). The downside is the total duration, very short again (remember "These Days" was 74 min. long). It would be nice there would be longer Richie's solos (althought in this album you can hear his powerful guitar very much more than in previous 2000's albums). The solo in "Bullet" is great, but imagine it would have been longer ... (maybe in concert ...) br / br / My brother and some friends also find "Bullet" and "Broken promiseland" among their favourites, but they are not for me. I see them as bulk tracks, sorry. What I mean is that there will be different opinions about favourite tracks. br / br / Finally, I'm glad they have taken distance from that smooth "american FM rock" style I did appreciate in the bulk songs of "Bounce" and "Have a nice day" (Lost Highway is a very respectable exception in many ways). And what else ... I am EMOTIONATED with this album, like I was not since "These Days". That must mean something ... I am musically emotionated the way only Bon Jovi can do with me, and I have had to wait many years. So I am glad, I can remember the great feelings of the old times. Thank you guys. br / br / P.D.: I am sorry for my bad English. br /

Not sure what some people here thought they were buying. This is Bon Jovi and they have made a good Bon Jovi album in 2009. Let 1986 go people.
