the genuine article September 7, 1999 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book should be required reading for every American. Its affirmation of faith, family, honor and country -- even in the face of truly horrific experiences -- is an inspiration.pWhat most impresses is McCain's total lack of rancor torward his captors. Their actions would have earned the eternal wrath of lesser men, including myself. In an era littered with ersatz heros and false icons, McCain is the genuine article.
FANTASTIC! August 31, 1999 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I waited many months for this book to come out and man was it worth the wait! McCain is in a class all by himself. While GW Bush hems and haws about his past, Steve Forbes worries about whether or not he has to sell a vacation home or two to pay for his campaign, and Elizabeth Dole struggles to find a way to speak without that syrupy script she always has, McCain takes his case to the people by telling us about the things that really matter. Can you spell upset? And I am a Democrat!
DEEPLY INSPIRING September 4, 1999 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Senator McCain's incredibly moving portrayal of his fascinating upbringing and experiences throughout life deeply moved me. The hardships and the pain that he endured throughout his captivity created a man of complete integrity and loyalty who shares with us some of life's most important lessons. I cherish this book and what it taught me about morality and the importance of honesty. I would love to have Senator McCain become our next President, he is the answer to what this counrty needs, and after you finish this book you will understand why.
VERY INSPIRING September 6, 1999 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
TERRIFIC! WE'VE SUFFERED LONG ENOUGH FROM THE GLUT OF DISTURBING, NEGATIVE BOOKS ABOUT PROMISCUITY, GREEDY WALL STREET TYPES, SERIAL KILLERS, CANNIBALS, ET AL, THAT THE PUBLISHING WORLD SHOVES AT US. IT IS REFRESHING TO SEE A BOOK ABOUT POSITIVE VALUES, A BOOK WITH AN INSPIRING ROLE MODEL LIKE JOHN McCAIN. IT HAS WON AN HONORED PLACE ON MY BOOKSHELF ALONGSIDE 'THE GREATEST GENERATION', 'THE TESTAMENT', AND 'THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY'.
A must-read book for all Americans August 27, 1999 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I laughed and cried and was so inspired by this book. Faith of My Fathers is the story of a family who has given so much to America. Three generations of McCain men honorably served their country in the United States Navy. The McCain's witnessed much of the important military events of the last half century. From the surrender of Japan in WWII, to submarine cat-and-mouse-games that are so vivid that you can smell the fear and courage, to John McCain's tough yet inspiring experiences with torture as a POW in North Vietnam.pThis is a book about family, honor, and love of one's country. It is the first book I've ever read by a presidential hopeful that never even mentions politics. It is an extraordinary book and one of the best stories I've ever read. --Paul Hickman
