Great Fun May 22, 2009 M. Dowden (London, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
The US may have Dita von Teese, but we have the gorgeous Immodesty Blaize, whose curves are positively illegal. When I first heard about this book I thought I would give it a read when it came out, but then I heard it being referred to the likes of Jackie Collins. Being a male I don't do chick-lit......well alright I admit that I did read Bridget Jones' Diary which I thoroughly enjoyed. In the end I thought what the heck, lets give this book a go.
br /
br /Am I glad I did, Ms Blaize has kept to the old adage about writing about what you know, and has given us a story based around burlesque and the world of show business. Tiger Starr is on the way to the top with Las Vegas looming ever closer, but things are not all rosy. Enter the showbiz world of burlesque, where costume designs and productions would put Bugsby Berkeley to shame.
br /
br /This book is not just for the ladies, this is for anyone who likes a good read and offers some great escapism from the woes of our present times. Tiger Starr starts getting threatening letters and skeletons in her closet start appearing in the press. What is a girl to do? Like a lot of us, me included Tiger bottles things up and doesn't let others know what is happening. Also in the cut-throat world of showbiz there are people always ready to step over you and replace you. Georgia, Tiger's dance captain wants to be like Tiger and grab the limelight, Sienna, Tiger's daughter feels resentful and wants revenge, Rex her PR man wants to bed her. On top of this you have Rosemary Baby a real psycho, appearing on the scene, who has already sabotaged another burlesque star in the past, and you have Tiger's 'stagedoor johnnie' who may just be her number one fan, or something more sinister. Who is out to get Tiger?
br /
br /Admittedly some of the story you will piece together and it won't be a surprise as these revelations appear throughout the book. This has obviously been done intentionally to keep you from getting to the real question, who is writing the sinister notes, and to keep the story fast paced and full of action. Add to this a lively brew of sex, including some sapphic action this reads like a blockbuster.....it's a shame that it will never probably be made into a movie, the production of the stage-sets would be uncalculable. If you like a heady brew of sex, rape, jealousy, revenge and murder, plus some great one-liners and high camp, you will love this.
br /
br /Everything turns out hunky dory in the end, like the great nineteenth century triple deckers. This has a storyline straight out of a Jacobean play on top of that, so really this will appeal to a large group of people, and is definitely mainstream. This story has some great OTT characters, and is more camp than an Elton John concert, so curl up, relax and have a gret time reading this. Please, please, Ms Blaize write us another one.
The book Tease July 31, 2009 Amanda Louise Huck i will enjoy reading this book as i have heard good things about the author
A tease indeed August 11, 2009 Liselore (Amsterdam) I loved Tease - it's camp, kitschy, glamorous and a wonderful insight into the world of burlesque performance (diamond-encrusted props, hot-pink curls and tiny corsets galore) by a burlesque insider, Immodesty Blaize. The stalker-backstory kept me interested, but the most compelling feature of the book was the character of Tiger Starr: gutsy, sexy, but ultimately vulnerable heroine. I especially liked the flashbacks, that gave an insight into how Tiger came to be this way. And the gay best friend was adorable.
br /I say: bring on the sequel, Ms. Blaize!! Hear hear!
An unashamed romp June 18, 2009 Juniper Deleuze (London, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
On a languid summer day, this escapist world where costumes are glamorous and handmade and props cost the earth but are deemed worth it, is a right rollicking good read. If you're looking for great literature, look elsewhere. If you're looking for entertainment, roll up, roll up!

br /In the centenary year of the Ballets Russes, Immodesty Blaize is carrying on the great tradition of titivating the audience with colourful and exquisite detail. She also includes enough irony to allow the reader notional sangfroid (think Jilly Cooper with attitude), all without taking herself too seriously. My favourite point is *shock horror* having a heroine who has to regain weight to be back on top - what a relief.
br /
br /Miss Blaize, keep at it - it was sheer undiluted pleasure and is highly recommended.
A Great Read. June 22, 2009 Ms. J. F. Gilby (bexhill, uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I came across my book during my searches which I bought and just finished it this afternoon. Story is about Tiger Starr, a burlesque dancer, who goes through the up and downs of her fast-pacing life. The highs are when her dancing is a success with people, has some funny friends and she may even have the chance to fall in love. But the low points are shocking, stuff I won't spoil but it is indeed a jaw-dropper. It gripped me to the end, Tiger is a strong character and I felt for her during every page of this book. It's a excellent start for Immodesty Blaize, she has written a sexy book without being too over the top and just enjoyable during the summer. A great read to go through again and again.
