Amazon.co.uk Review
In the opening of Lance Armstrong's memoir, IEvery Second Counts/I (coauthored by Sally Jenkins), he reflects: "Generally, one of the hardest things in the world to do is something twice." While he is talking here about his preparation for what would prove to be his second consecutive Tour de France victory in 2000, the sentiment could equally be applied to the book itself. And just as Armstrong managed to repeat his incredible 1999 tour victory, IEvery Second Counts/I repeats--and, in some ways exceeds#151;the success of his bestselling first memoir, IIt's Not About the Bike/I. pIEvery Second Counts/I confronts the challenge of moving beyond his cancer experience, his first Tour victory and his celebrity status. Few of Armstrong's readers will ever compete in the Tour de France (though cyclists will relish Armstrong's detailed recounting of his 2000-2003 tour victories), but all will relate to his discussions of loss and disappointment in his personal and professional life since 1999. They will relate to his battles with petty bureaucracies, such as the French court system during the doping scandal that almost halted his career. And they will especially relate to constant struggles with work/life balance. pIn the face of September 11--which arrives halfway through the narrative (just before the fifth anniversary of his diagnosis)--Armstrong draws from his experiences to show that suffering, fear and death are the essential human condition. In so openly using his own life to illustrate how to face this reality, he proves that he truly is a hero--and not just because of the bike. In IEvery Second Counts/I he is to be admired as a human being, a man who sees every day as a challenge to live richly and well, no matter what hardships may come. I--Patrick O'Kelley, Amazon.com/I

5 out of 5 stars A life worth living   August 19, 2004

Having read "its not about the bike" I was compelled to obtain "every second counts" as quickly as possible. This book enables even the most ignorant spectator of cycle racing and the Tour de France in particular to appreciate how much more is involved in this sport than the pedalling of the routes of France we see on television. The details Lance Armstrong provides brings both the race and the figures in the peleton to life.pHowever, much deeper than the insight into this famous race, is the appreciation the reader is able to experience of a very human man with very human failings but incredible strength of purpose and character. He leaves you with the determination to make all your own seconds count. pThese books had a profound impact on me and I feel grateful to have been able to read them.

5 out of 5 stars Another inspiring autobiography   June 23, 2004

I'm sure most of you have heard or read the first Lance Armstong autobiography which centers around his battle with cancer and the amazing comeback in which he won probably the most grueling sporting event in the world. So its hard to think how his second book would beat his first. Well the truth is it doesnt but it does equal it. In this autobiography you are exposed to how Armstrong still has the odds stacked against him and many many doubters but he still rises and proves them wrong and does so with such determination that you cant help but be inspired.brThe basic fact is that if there was a film made about these two auto biographies no one believe it to be a true story and yet it is. brbuy it. Be inspired.

I have already read the first book, It's Not About the Bike, but this book carries on the story and extends Lance's career to cycling, the aftermath of cancer and info about his charity and his team-mates. He mixes emotion, humour and victory all into one to make this the best book I've read in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars A great book by an inspiring man   July 27, 2005

This is a great book! It is a super read and full of great comments. Inspirational. The book is a real insight into the life, mind, training and dedication of Lance Armstrong. It's revealing and the words seem like they are straight from his mouth. I see this as a good thing for 2 reasons 1. You get his actual thoughts and not his thoughts interpreted or edited by a shadow co author. 2. It makes it easy to read and great to read.pI found the book very enjoyable and inspiring. I was glad (but surprised) Lance included so many revealing comments about his approach and preparation to training and races. It's a book I would recommend to any keen sports person especially those at a high level. Even people who are not active could not fail to be inspired by reading Lance's book. The book would also be useful and potentially life saving for anyone diagnosed with cancer. pAmong my favourite quotes are; p"Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever."p"Cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me. Because my illness was also my antidote: it cured me of laziness."p"Before I was diagnosed, I was a slacker. I was getting paid a lot of money for a job I didn't do 100 percent. But near death cleared the decks, and what came after was a bright, sparking awareness: time is limited, so I better wake up every morning fresh and know that I have just one chance to live this particular day right, and to string my days together into a life of action, and purpose."pI will be recommending Lance's book to my clients along with Jonny Wilkinson's great book 'My World'. Even if you hate cycling or rugby I highly recommend those two books. Inspiring insights into the mind of winners.pPhil McNally brAuthor of 'Winning Mentality- 7 Mind Techniques used by winners'

A compulsive read- Lance comes across as direct, thoughtful, systematic,.... and human. His honesty and views will inspire you, and his frailty regarding his relationship with Kik and the children will inspire you. pA much better read than his first, highly recommeded.
