| Customer Reviews: Douglas reveals the child within.... July 21, 2001 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
What a wonderful brave book. Douglas reveals the child within: sensitive, struggling Issur Danielovitch.pDouglas has lived the great American story: born to poverty but given the talent and opportunities to find success and stardom. One can only wonder at his life path had his parents remained in Russia.pBut for all the adulation and women, the man inside never changed. pDanielovitch was an unsure, sensitive child born to a boarish father. Their poor relationship gives a clue to Douglas' constant need for approval and recognition.pBehind the tough guy persona the book reveals that Douglas remains the aloof, wounded loner of his childhood. There is little talk of friends here.pHis contemporaries found him hard to work with. Could they have ever realised that Douglas overcompensated in order to hide weak Issur, the child who was surrounded by adoring women but who sought, and failed to get, the recognition he most wanted: his dad's.pThis is a book for sensitive types. Enjoy.
Outstanding February 19, 2006 Mr. K. Whalen (Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read this book about ten years ago. And having recently watched Spartacus I told my wife how good this book was and decided to search Amazon to see if I could purchase a copy. When I did I couldn#8217;t believe there were no reviews so here goes: pQuite simply this is an outstanding read. There is no #8220;Big Hollywood Star#8221; treatment here it is a true account of the struggle and rise of Kirk Douglass. Highlights for me were the accounts of the sheer scale of the planning and the star names which went into the making of Spartacus, the fall outs with actors. It#8217;s all laid bare for the reader. One account of my favourite Douglass film, The Vikings, tells how the Norwegian crew were at first standoffish about American actors telling the story of their people. So Douglass took part in the past time of stepping across the ores on the long ships and was so good at it that he gained their respect and this is also in the film. pIf you want to cast your mind back to the true golden age of Hollywood then this is the book for you.
The Ragman's Son June 16, 2009 Colin Gregory (St Lucia, West Indies) Everyone should read, and absorb, this life story. As the sleeve says, ..'powerful, angry and passionate....holding back nothing. The Ragman's Son
br /is that rare autobiography which reads like a novel, yet radiates truth'.
br /In my opinion - a masterpiece.
