Amazon.co.uk Review Carol Vorderman is leading the detox craze with the follow-up book to her popular video, I28 Day Detox Diet/I. She has teamed up once again with Ko Chohan, creator of the detox diet, to provide guidance to those wanting to lose weight, gain energy and feel better about themselves. p If you are new to the detox diet, don't fret: the book covers the same ground as the video, explaining what detoxing is, why we should do it and how to go about it. Unlike the video it then offers recipes for those stuck on what to do with pulses, vegetables, grains and not much else. It also suggests ways of integrating the principles of detox into your life once you've completed the 28-day plan.p Vorderman is a friendly guide on this detox tour. She admits that it's not easy--and she's right. No carbohydrates, dairy products, meat, caffeine or alcohol. But the idea isn't as scary as it first sounds. The strict guidelines are only for 28 days, not a lifetime. The genius of this book is that Vorderman somehow convinces you that cutting out everything you love from your diet--chocolate, coffee, cheese--is not only a good idea, but is an attainable one. p The recipes are easy enough to follow and quite tasty, though stocking up your cupboard with the vital ingredients and supplements may be costly. Don't be fooled, this is a complete lifestyle change for most people and will be a hard slog. But, if you give it a shot and stick to it, it seems you will reap the rewards. --IAmelia Crook/I

Easy to follow and surprisingly tasty for a detox plan! December 22, 2001 335 out of 343 found this review helpful
I had been feeling sluggish, bloated and fat with horrible grey skin for AGES (nice huh!) and decided to see if detox would help. I was a bit sceptical about buying a product endorsed by a celebrity but I'd heard good things about Carol Vorderman's detox programme so decided to buy the book. And I was pleasantly surprised!pAs you might imagine with a detox programme there is a lot you can't eat: no dairy, no sugar, no caffeine, no meat or fish and no products containing wheat. However - one thing the book is very good at is at suggesting alternatives. While rice milk might sound yucky you soon get used to having it with museli or porridge for breakfast and if you think you're really going to miss sandwiches for lunch - you can still have them but with rye bread or maybe oatcakes or rice cakes. If you love hummous you'll like this diet - it's actually recommended! You can also eat nuts, seeds (yes - sunflower seeds are okay actually!), dried fruit, fresh fruit, loads of vegetables. You can also have brown rice, wheat free pasta, quinoa (like couscous) and other filling food stuffs. The bonus is there is no counting and measuring. You don't count calories and you don't weigh portions. You eat until you are full and if you get hungry you can have a snack without guilt.pThe book contains loads of recipes that you can make and has 28 days worth of menu suggestions which is useful if you're the sort of person who doesn't like to think about what to have for each meal and would rather have it spelt out for them.pThere is a suggestion on supplements that you can take to help the detox such as kelp which supposedly helps metabolism and milk thistle that helps the liver detox.pYes, I DID crave naughty things like chocolate and not so naughty things like salmon while I was on the detox and, like any other human, I did cheat every now and then! BUT...at the end of the 28 days I felt more full of energy, my skin looked clearer, my eyes looked brighter and I'd gone down from a size 18 to a size 16. Give it a go - it's only 28 days!!
This book changed my life for the better February 4, 2002 33 out of 33 found this review helpful
I have just completed the 28 days recommended by this book and I feel fantastic! Like many people when I bought this book I was sceptical (although recently Carol Vordeman does look great for her age). I was feeling sluggish, stressed, I was suffering from spots and have for a very long time been intending to loose half a stone. Like many woman, I had also got in the starve/binge syndrome. I went out and bought all the stuff which did cost quite a lot initially but overall my food bill has gone down because I no longer buy expensive confenience foods and snacks. Another tip, go to your local market once a week and buy all the fruit veg you need (supermarkets will cost you 3 times more). I started to feel better within 2 or 3 days. I couldn't believe had much energy I had and I now get up a bit earlier and do 15 mins of Yoga every day. Admittedly I have always enjoyed fruit and veg but I really enjoy the taste of the food. It is impossible to eat quickly so you feel full and you rarely suffer any hunger pangs. This diet works because it is realistic. The food is easy to prepare and can be made in batches frozen. My partner and children often have what Im having but with a portion of meat or fish. You can adapt it if you eat out (or just have what you want if you dont eat out frequently). Where I used to think about food all the time, I now get on with my life and dont feel frightened of food or fat like I used to. There was one down side, I felt very bloated for the first 10 days, but this eased off. Also you do go to the loo alot but not excessively and I never suffered from that horrible feeling constipation gives you. If you want fast weight loss (which is usually mostly water) and constant food cravings, and the feeling of being deprived, DONT buy this book. If you want to change your bad eating habits forever, loose weight gradually, wake every morning with a clear head, be full of energy even when you have a full and busy life, BUY this week immediately. I will 40 next month and I look and feel at least 10 years younger. At last I can eat the occasional bar of chocolate or have a glass of wine without guilt, but I intend to carry on the principles of the book as much a possible for the rest of my life.
Lose weight find more energy! March 14, 2002 32 out of 32 found this review helpful
I have tried lots of diets before, but this is the first one that has really worked. It is essentially a vegan, wheat free diet and yes, it is hard to adjust to at first. But the book is good at suggesting alternatives as soon as you start to feel the benefits (for me, week 2), it gets easier!pPersonally, I will stick to the principles long term now. Not eating wheat has meant I have lost such a huge amount of bloating, I could never imagine going back to it.pSo, for 28 days it is worth a try! May be a bit hard to get used to, but it works - I went from wearing size 16 jeans to wearing size 12!
This is the best healthy eating plan ever ! June 11, 2002 liz@keygs.co.uk (Scotland) 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
Having dieted on and off for years and felt deprived and hungry, this eating plan was a revelation!pI was aware of being addicted to all the comfort foods, bread, pasta, chocolate and the reward bottle of wine on a Friday night for having starved all week! Plus I suffered from coffee jitters. Not any more.pFrom day one I could not believe how much you were allowed to eat and in fact complained of feeling too full. I cannot say it was really easy because I really craved coffee and bread and by week two I was really missing chewing meat, the benefits however far surpassed the cravings. I lost 9lbs in three weeks and just as the book states, my clothes all hang on me. Plus we are much calmer people.pI lapsed twice. Having some wine when friends came to stay was lovely but I found two glasses quite sufficient. The second lapse was having some tuna with a baked potato.pBoth my husband and I followed the full 28 days together which made it a lot easier( he has lost over a stone!)and my six year old Rebecca is also enjoying having the mixed toasted seeds and the rice noodles instead of wheat pasta. Plus she really enjoys the rye crispbreads instead of bread in her school lunch box. We all eat a lot more fruit and now have a passion for mangoes and we eat all sorts of nuts which we all love.pWe had a few indulgences after the 28 days but the new habit is well and truly set. We have introduced fish again and cheese but only a war ration portion..pWe use soya as our meat textured replacement as it is excellent in chillies. That is another bonus, meals are much more flavoursome and my cupboards are now bulging with herbs and seasonings and this is a woman who hated having to cook! pThe best thing is how in tune you become with your bodies needs. Just check all those processed foods for additives. Scary!pGet fresh! Go dettox!
