4 out of 5 stars a bit amateurish but...   August 17, 2009

You really have to read to page 100 till this book starts to grip your attention. Overall, much could be done to improve this as although the ideas are interesting, most of this was cliched and i really struggled to get past the first few pages. HOwever, it gets better as you go on. A valiant effort for a debut novelist with genuine humour (truth be told, i only liked the dwarf) so a four star grade for a three star book. Hopefully, the next book will improve.

I just finished this book, and I realise it is the first in a series, but the caption sounded right up my alley. I wasn't dissapointed, but I do have to say it isnt as original as one could have hoped. The protagonist is likeable and troubled, but of the sort that lets you grab on to him and be interested enough to see what happens to him next. There is a bit of flat romance with very little to explain the depth of attraction which I found rather annoying and almost setup as a sort of filler, which just had to be there. The peripheral characters are quite good, infact if you are familiar with the Malazan soldier types and the banter surrounding them, you will recognise what this author is trying for, and he does succeed at it in my opinion. The soldiers were among the most interesting and funny parts of the story and kept me going when the rest of it got a little bland. br / br /I recommend the book, but I dont think its original enough, nor are the main characters solid enough for more than 3 stars.
