Fantastic June 25, 2009 SJSmith (UK) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I couldn't put this book down! Having loved Neil White's previous two books with Jack Garrett I was very pleased to get hold of a copy of the third one. I opened the cover with enthusiasm and was instantly swept away (again). However, there was one change this time and that I actually found it just a little scary in places, which doesn't usually happen to me. There was something about this plot that made it feel very different to the other two but I don't know why.

br /Reporter Jack Garrett and his girlfriend, DC Laura McGanity have become trapped in a custody battle that began in `Lost Souls' and this is covered throughout `Last Rites'. Because of the custody battle, Laura wanted to stay away from the tough cases, focusing on her son Bobby instead. Unfortunately this wasn't to stay like that for long and Laura soon becomes caught up in the case of Sarah Goode, missing since the murder of her boyfriend Luke Howarth.

br /As with all thrillers that have very short chapters you are left whirling through the pages thinking "just another other one" and then you realise that you've been doing that for fifty pages or so! Superbly written and completely captivating this book is compelling reading. If you look close enough all the clues are there right in front of you on the page but even if you do unravel the mystery you'll still need to read to the end to find out whether you were right or not.

Very good July 27, 2009 G. M. Petzl (London, UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the first book I have read by Neil White and I have to say, what a find. It is well written and well paced. The book has a good story line, but I regret not having read the first of his books, as there are references to characters and plotlines from the previous books. But it was a very interesting read that had me hooked right from the start.

br /I also love the fact that Neil White came from a poor background and really made something of himself, as he is now a prosecutor and an author at the same time. It makes him very likeable.
br /A book well worth reading!
An excellent crime novel with supernatural elements thrown in for good measure. July 5, 2009 David 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a great book - as you will no doubt guess from the 5 stars I have awarded this book I enjoyed it. I won't go into too much plot detail as other reviewers have covered the plot. Reporter Jack Garrett investigates the dissapearance of Sarah Goode and soon becomes inbroilled in the sinister events that are happening her home town. The book is basically a murder mystery with some supernatural elements thrown in for good measure.

br /Neil Write's Last Rites is very well written and moves at a nice pace. The plot is well thought out with some nice twists and turns. The characters are nicely fleshed out so you care about them and are intersted in what happens to them. If you enjoy a good murder mystery then this book is well worth reading. I will be checking out Neil White's other books Fallen Idols and Lost Souls.
taut, gripping thriller July 9, 2009 laineyf (warwickshire) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
'Last Rites' is excellent. It is set in Lancashire, and tells the story of Jack Garrett, a reporter, and his partner Laura, a police officer originally based in London. but who has moved to Lancashire with her son Bobby, to be with Jack. Laura is an ambitious Police Officer, who has taken a backward step career-wise in moving to Lancashire, and is embroiled in a custody battle with her ex, over her son. She and Jack are going through a very strained patch in their relationship, and things get worse when a local woman, Sarah, apparently murders her lover, and then runs away. Jack becomes involved with the case, and all is not as it seems. There is murder, mystery, witchcraft, legend, truth, fiction, and horror all contained within the book, and it draws on the legend of the Pendle Witches. I found it to be very gripping, entirely feasible, and thoroughly horrifying - in the fact that it is very realistic, and the plot was brilliant, I thought. A brilliantly good read, and highly recommended.
