5 out of 5 stars Very useful guide / great book on Jordan   January 14, 2005

I recently spent two weeks travelling through Jordan - my first trip to the Middle East - and took with me all the guidebooks I could find. This one was, by far, the best. Not only was it consistently accurate and useful, it also provided a lot of very interesting background information on the country's history, culture, and social life.pI spent most of my time with Jordanian friends, who took me to local hotspots and out-of-the-way favorites, and it was almost frustrating to see that however obscure and apparently hidden the place, it was included in the book (the only exceptions, for those who really care: a great hole in the wall falafel place called "Al Kuds Cafeteria" on Rainbow Street in Amman, an equally cheap and fantastic schwarma place near the second circle, also in Amman, and the Hotel Panorama in Petra: affordable, quiet, and with a great view of the valley).pThis book will be essential for those interested in the main tourist destinations, but also (and especially) for those willing to travel, read and explore more. My Jordanian friends were so taken with this book, that some of them actually bought it...

5 out of 5 stars The best guide   January 29, 2009

I have always thought that the Rough Guides series are the best, and this one only goes to confirm an already strongly held opinion. The general information about local customs and taboos, etc. was invaluable, and we could have caused offence to the Jordan puiblic without the information we gathered from the guide. br /The information about each place, be it a cafe, restaurant, town or tourist sight, is easy to read and accurate without being unpleasant. br /I would thoroughly recommend this guide to anyone contemplating a trip to a beautiful and interesting country.

5 out of 5 stars Very promising   February 15, 2006

I found the 2002 edition excellent and I#x27;m sure the new edition will be at least as good. Background information is excellent, and the maps and details of individual places of interest (particularly archaeological sites) give all the information one needs to appreciate them in full. Only down side: not many photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.   October 12, 2009

Many years ago I learned to trust the Rough Guide series, and this one is no exception. It is now a few years old (2006), and Jordan is a fast changing country so some of the fine detail is now out of date, but the overall coverage, maps and suggested eateries are are valid and worth having. We were on an escourted tour this time and not our usual "make it up as you go along" trip, but even so the Rough Guide came up with suggestions on places to eat, side trips to go and see and background to what we were looking at. Overall a welcome additon to the whole trip and well worth taking along.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Guide   October 27, 2009

This guide was a great help during our recent visit. There was a problem with delivery (postal strike?) but Amazon got a replacement to us with 2 days to spare. br /I was slightly put out that a new edition became available 5 days before I ordered this one and certain details in this edition are definitely out of date - make sure you get the latest one.
