Allen a snip insists Hughes

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has hailed the performances of new signing Joe Allen and believes he was a snip at £13million.

An injury doubt before kick-off with a hamstring problem, the summer signing from Liverpool broke the deadlock with an eighth-minute header before lashing in a second on the stroke of half-time as the Potters cruised to a 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

Allen took his tally to five in four games for club and country and has already equalled his best-ever Premier League haul for a season, and Hughes is delighted to have him.

"In the current market, you have to say he's a bargain," Hughes told reporters. "For us to bring him here, I think we've done a great bit of business to be perfectly honest. Sometimes the stars align and you can bring in a player you didn't think you were going to get.

"Thankfully we were able to get it over the line and since he's been here he's been a breath of fresh air, on and off the pitch."

Allen's form in front of goal is even more surprising given the fact he has always been known as a defensive midfielder, but Hughes spotted something other may not have seen.

"We pushed him further forward just because sometimes when you get the opportunity to work with players day-in, day-out you see things that you didn't realise that they may have the capability of," Hughes added.

"His anticipation of where the ball is going to land was evident for everyone to see."
