Flyweight Edwards earns ABA shock

Liverpool flyweight Paul Edwards was at the centre of a major upset in boxing's ABA finals at Wembley when he beat double champion Stewart Langley.

At it was a toe-to-toe contest and Stewart having been beaten in their previous encounter was obviously happy with his success.

In another bout featherwieght Stephen Smith again from Liverpool emulated his older brother Paul by becoming an ABA champion when he won a tight fought final 8-6 against Birmingham's Akaash Bhatia.

And England's most decorated amateur Nick McDonald sealed an ABA hat-trick with a 21-8 success over game Stuart Hall of Spennymoor.

MacDonald said after the bout that his ambition was now to win something as prestigious as the Commonwealth Games title.

"I've done everything at this level now and was looking forward to the bigger stage in Melbourne.

In the middleweight division Londoner James Degale beat Liverpool's Joe McNally 25-12 to retain his ABA title.
