ALI AWARDED PEACE PRIZE
Crusading boxing legend MUHAMMAD ALI has been awarded a prestigious German peace prize for his efforts to promote the work of the United Nations.
The former world heavyweight champion, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, has worked ceaselessly for civil rights in recent years and was rewarded with the OTTO HAHN peace medal at a ceremony in Berlin on Saturday (17DEC05).
He joins a glittering list of previous winners including former Soviet president MIKHAIL GORBACHEV and writer SIMON WIESENTHAL, but is the first athlete to receive the prize.
Ali's wife LONNIE accepted the award on the 63-year-old's behalf, saying, "He never gave up on peace."
